  • El Monte Union to Host Ribbon-Cutting of South El Monte High’s Modernization Project

    The El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of South El Monte High School’s (SEMHS) Modernization Project, which features renovations to the entire campus including redesigned landscaping and outdoor seating, upgraded classrooms, library, and administration building, and state-of-the-art technology. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature speeches from SEMHS principal Dr. Jorge Morales, Associated Student Body President Gabriela Garcia, EMUHSD Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga, and Board of Trustees President Ricardo Padilla, and a taco celebration, with local dignitaries, school officials, students, and community members in attendance.

  • Acting Legend Jane Kaczmarek Guest Stars on Mountain View’s Student-Run Podcast

    Mountain View High School (MVHS) students packed the school’s cafetorium to hear three-time Golden Globe and seven-time Primetime Emmy nominee Jane Kaczmarek share her expertise and experiences in the entertainment industry during a recording of the school’s “The Art of Talking” podcast on Sept. 4. Kaczmarek, best known for her role as the sharp-witted mother on "Malcolm in the Middle," brought her on-screen passion and intensity to “The Art of Talking’s” first episode of the 2024-25 season. The podcast is produced entirely by Mountain View students in the Viking Informational Systems Technology Academy (VISTA) and was recorded in front of a live audience of eager Mountain View High yearbook and journalism course students, along with fans spanning generations.

    South El Monte High School's (SEMHS) Andrea Pablo-Matamoros will amplify the voices of El Monte Union students and help shape District policies as she steps into her new role as the 2024-25 Board of Trustees Student Member, following her official swearing-in during the Aug. 7 Board meeting. Family, friends, community members, and District officials gathered to celebrate Pablo-Matamoros as she officially assumed her role as Student Board Member and took on the additional responsibility of serving as president of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) during her senior year.

El Monte Union Zoo Crew Program Seeks to Engage Students in STEM

Protecting wildlife and preserving natural resources for future generations is the focus of a new architectural design and engineering pathway expected to launch this fall at El Monte Union’s Mountain View High School. The science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program, “Zoo Crew: Engineers Gone Wild,” will allow students the opportunity to study how urban sprawl affects the welfare of animals in the wild. The course will also challenge students to create solutions that promote environmental sustainability while maintaining the delicate balance between developing metropolitan areas and adjoining natural habitats.

El Monte Union’s 2018-19 Plan to Boost Technology Access, Online Learning Programs for Students

The El Monte Union High School District will invest nearly $24 million to increase technology access, incorporate online math programs, increase after-school enrichment programs, increase hours for community liaisons, increase support for mental health services and provide more student motivational incentives in 2018-19 as part of its Local Control and Accountability Plan. The programs are aimed at boosting the academic performance of high-needs students, who include English learners, students in foster care and those from low-income homes.

The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees on June 20 unanimously passed a resolution opposing the separation of children and families at the U.S.-Mexico border, a federal policy being enforced by the current administration. The policy has since been reversed through an executive order signed by the president on June 20. The resolution cites examples of migrant children being separated from their parents after being detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and demands action from the government to end the practice.

2 El Monte Union Schools Named to State Honor Roll for High Performance

Two El Monte Union high schools – Arroyo and Rosemead – have been named to the 2017-18 California Honor Roll for demonstrating consistently high levels of student academic achievement, narrowing the achievement gap and preparing students for college. The honor is given by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and sponsored by the Campaign for Businesses and Educational Excellence (CBEE), based on the results of state standardized tests in math and English language arts (ELA) taken in spring 2017. The program, which this year recognized 1,798 schools in California, is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes.

El Monte Union Celebrates Graduation of More than 2,000 Students

The El Monte Union High School District honored more than 2,000 members of the Class of 2018 in commencement ceremonies that included teachers and staff proudly looking on, excited students waving their diplomas through the air and families and friends cheering loudly from the stands. The District celebrated 530 graduating seniors from Arroyo High School, 427 students from El Monte High School, 322 students from Mountain View High, 394 seniors from Rosemead High and 305 students from South El Monte High. Fernando R. Ledesma graduated 75 students and the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School celebrated 90 students at its ceremony.

El Monte Union, SCE Celebrate Installation of 1,000th Electric Vehicle Station

Southern California Edison and El Monte Union High School District held a “1,000 Station Celebration” at South El Monte High School on May 30 to mark the installation of the 1,000th EV charging station under SCE’s Charge Ready program. Charge Ready is SCE’s pilot program to get more electric vehicle charging stations installed in locations where drivers park their cars for extended periods of time. El Monte Union, the first public school district in the program, has installed 44 stations at six District sites.

El Monte Union to Award Diploma to WWII Vet at May 31 Graduation

Rosemead High School is poised to retroactively award a high school diploma to a longtime community member who dropped out of high school just weeks ahead of graduation to join the Navy during World War II. Kelly Crowell – a 60-year Temple City resident who has volunteered as a pitching coach for the Rosemead High girls’ softball team for six years – will join the Class of 2018 at the school’s commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31. Other graduations taking place that day are Fernando R. Ledesma High at 5 p.m. at the high school; South El Monte High School at 6 p.m. at SEMHS Eagle Stadium; Arroyo High School at 7 p.m. at AHS Bergstrom Stadium; El Monte High School at 7 p.m. at EMHS Lion Field; Mountain View High School at 7 p.m. at MVHS Viking Stadium. The El Monte-Rosemead Adult School will celebrate students at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the Rosemead High Auditorium.

The El Monte-Rosemead Adult School will celebrate students at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the Rosemead High Auditorium. The following graduations will be held Thursday, May 31: Fernando R. Ledesma High at 5 p.m. at the high school; South El Monte High School at 6 p.m. at SEMHS Eagle Stadium; Arroyo High School at 7 p.m. at AHS Bergstrom Stadium; El Monte High School at 7 p.m. at EMHS Lion Field; Mountain View High School at 7 p.m. at MVHS Viking Stadium; and Rosemead High at 7 p.m. at RHS Panther Field.

El Monte Union Solar Boat Team Sprints to Victory at MWD Competition

Mountain View High School senior Steven Gov blasted out of the starting gate, steering his team’s solar boat through the current and sprinting 200 meters toward the finish line of a competition designed to introduce students to the ecological benefits of solar power and resource management. Gov’s skillful maneuvering helped the Mountain View Solar Creations Club record an impressive 13th place overall finish during the Metropolitan Water District’s 16th annual Solar Cup – the largest student-based solar-powered boat race in the nation ­– held May 18-20 at Lake Skinner in Temecula Valley.
