El Monte Union to Unveil Winner of Student Cooking Showdown on May 1
Student chefs from three El Monte Union high schools squared off to prepare a full meal – complete with a protein, vegetable and starch – in Cooking Showdown, the District’s first-ever cooking competition on March 15. Filmed by Mountain View's VISTA Academy video production class, the game show-style competition featured three teams of six students receiving identical surprise ingredients and being given 75 minutes to plan and prep their dishes. The winner will be announced at the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, May 1.
El Monte Union Partners with City of El Monte to INSPIRE Students
El Monte Union recently partnered with the City of El Monte to host two leadership conferences, dubbed INSPIRE, for hundreds of boys and girls who were provided with mentorship, inspiration and encouragement to ensure their success in high school and beyond. Students participated in three empowerment workshops, followed by luncheons with community leaders.
The Rosemead High School Science Olympiad team will return to the Southern California State Science Olympiad Tournament for the first time since 2016. The final will be held Saturday, April 6 at Caltech. The 15-member Panther squad scored a fourth-place finish at the nearly 30-team Los Angeles County Science Olympiad, held Jan. 26, advancing to the finals. Every member of the Panther team placed in the top six in at least one of the 23 events.
For the second year in a row, Rosemead High School’s Academic Decathlon team will compete in the California State Championship from Friday, March 22 through Sunday, March 24 in Sacramento. Rosemead took fifth place in the Los Angeles County Office of Education Academic Decathlon. The nine members earned 34 medals, including a third-place trophy in Super Quiz.
El Monte Union High School District held its second annual State of the District with Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga on Feb. 20, during which he recapped the year thus far. The program featured student performances and a live broadcast from the Mountain View High School Vista Academy students.
Arroyo High School seniors Ethan Wong and Molly Hake share an affinity for academics and athleticism. After years of diligence in the classroom and in athletic competition, the students have been recognized as two of the top scholars in the nation. Wong, a tennis player, scored his most impressive ace when he earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36, a perfect score reached by only 2,760 students – or 1/10 of 1 percent – of the more than 2 million who took the exam in 2017. Hake, a distance runner who has garnered many awards on Arroyo’s track and cross country teams, was recently recognized as a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
El Monte Union hosted a CTE Fair on Jan. 23 for area middle school students and their parents, introducing them to a host of career technical education pathways available at EMUHSD schools. Students and parents learned about pathways in business/finance; engineering; arts/media/design; health care; hospitality and food service; building and construction; transportation; and manufacturing.
El Monte Union to Showcase Career Tech for Middle School Students
El Monte Union will host a CTE Fair to introduce local middle school students to a host of career technical education pathways available at EMUHSD schools from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the Grace T. Black Auditorium, 130 Tyler Ave., El Monte. Students and parents can learn about pathways in business/finance; engineering; arts/media/design; health care; hospitality and food service; building and construction; transportation; and manufacturing. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to meet CTE teachers from the five comprehensive high schools, local community college representatives and El Monte community business partners.
South El Monte High School senior Daniel Torres will represent El Monte Union High School District at the 130th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day after winning a coveted spot in the Pasadena City College Honor Band, which has marched in every parade since 1930. After a rigorous audition process that included hundreds of high school musicians from throughout Southern California, the Honor Band chose Torres, a four-year member of the Mighty Eagles Marching Band, to perform in the New Year’s Day parade. Torres is joining nearly 250 musicians who will represent their schools and showcase their talents in the parade.
The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees conducted its annual reorganization meeting Dec. 5, selecting David Diaz as president for 2019, Florencio F. Briones as vice president and Ricardo Padilla as clerk. Diaz – a graduate of South El Monte High School who serves as the director of an environmental justice and health organization – was elected to the board in November 2017. Also serving on the Board of Trustees are Carlos G. Salcedo and outgoing president Maria Morgan.
