  • El Monte Union Cheerleading Team Claims 2026 NCA National Championship

    El Monte High School’s (EMHS) varsity cheerleading team captured the 2026 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) High School National Championship during a competition held Jan. 23–24 in Fort Worth, Texas, earning the first national title in the District’s and program’s history. The Lions claimed the championship in the Advanced Non-Tumbling Coed Varsity Crowd Leading division, becoming the only California school to compete in the category and just the third California team to claim an NCA national title in the organization’s 75-year history.   • El Monte Union Students to Help Shape Meal Plans Through Dietary Inclusion Council

    El Monte Union High School District students who would like to see more vegetarian and vegan options for lunch will have an opportunity to shape their school’s meal plan through the District’s newly-formed Dietary Inclusion Council, a student-led coalition that will work directly with the Nutrition Services Department to advocate for healthy, plant-based items on daily lunch menus. The council was spearheaded by Arroyo High School senior Emily Lin, who petitioned the Board of Trustees to pass a resolution to establish the Districtwide advisory body. The resolution was passed during the Jan. 7 Board meeting. Lin also helped secure a $4,000 microgrant from the nonprofit advocacy group Friends of the Earth to support the promotion and marketing of plant-based options across the District.

  • El Monte Union Students Earn Coveted Spots in 2026 Tournament of Roses Honor Band

    Six El Monte Union High School District students took part in the 2026 Rose Parade on Jan. 1 after being selected to perform with the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band, representing their schools and the District during one of the nation’s most widely watched New Year’s Day events. South El Monte High School junior Aden Gonzalez returned as a herald performer for the second consecutive year; Mountain View High School (MVHS) senior Pablo Pinedo was selected for percussion (cymbals), and senior Jennifer Rivera-Rivas, along with juniors Samantha De La Cueva Morfin, Daniela Garcia, and Karina Rodriguez, were all selected as color guard performers. The District’s Board of Trustees honored the students during its Jan. 7 meeting, presenting certificates of recognition and celebrating the milestone with family members, school leaders, and music educators.

El Monte Union Goes 1:1 for 2019-20 School Year

El Monte Union is gearing up to launch its new Access for All digital learning initiative, which will put technology into the hands of every student and eliminate barriers to learning, ensuring their academic success at school and at home. This fall, El Monte Union students will receive their own dedicated Chromebook laptops, carrying cases and chargers to use at home and school under a 1:1 digital learning initiative. The District will also provide students with limited or no at-home Internet access and the opportunity to apply for a free MiFi wireless hotspot through a 1 Million Project Foundation grant. The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 20.

El Monte Union Celebrates Class of 2019 with Ceremonies

El Monte Union High School District celebrated more than 2,000 members of the Class of 2019 during commencement ceremonies that brought together teachers, staff, families and community members, who cheered on graduates as they received their diplomas and leaped into the next chapter of their lives. The District celebrated graduating seniors from its six high schools on June 6. The adult school celebrated high school diploma recipients on May 29.

San Gabriel Unified Educators Honored for Special Needs Dedication

Ten San Gabriel Unified educators were honored during the May 28 Governing Board meeting for their success in implementing Classroom Pivotal Response Training (CPRT) in SGUSD schools. CPRT is an evidenced-based practice that aims to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

State Grant to Bolster El Monte Union Student College Savings Accounts

The El Monte Promise Foundation has won a $448,000 Every Kid Counts state grant that will enable the nonprofit to expand its college savings program for K-12 students, including those enrolled in El Monte Union High School District schools. The California Student Aid Commission awarded $2.9 million in grants to nine nonprofit organizations and agencies across the state that sponsor or administer programs that incentivize families with children to open and maintain college savings accounts. The El Monte Promise Foundation, a partner of El Monte Union, launched its savings program in 2015 to help cultivate a college-going culture in El Monte.

El Monte Union Student Wins 32nd Congressional District Art Competition

For the next year, Mountain View High School student Nancy Hoang’s artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol Building after she won first place in the 2019 art competition for the 32nd Congressional District, represented by U.S. Rep. Grace F. Napolitano. Napolitano’s office received 76 art pieces from 13 high schools across the San Gabriel Valley. Hoang won first place with her colored pencil drawing, “Orange Fish.”

El Monte Union will celebrate its Class of 2019 with graduations on Thursday, June 6: Fernando R. Ledesma High at 5 p.m. at the high school; South El Monte High School at 6 p.m. at Eagle Stadium; Arroyo High School at 7 p.m. at Bergstrom Stadium; El Monte High School at 7 p.m. at Lion Field; Mountain View High School at 7 p.m. at Viking Stadium; and Rosemead High School at 7 p.m. at Panther Field. El Monte-Rosemead Adult School celebrated high school diploma recipients on May 29.
