More than 84 Gilbert School students walked the Fullerton College campus during a Nov. 22 instructional tour led by Fullerton College Student Ambassadors, who provided information about programs, services and campus life from a student perspective.
Buena Park School District Students Shine at Speech Contest
More than 90 students from across Buena Park School District took to the Whitaker School stage to showcase their public speaking skills during the District’s inaugural speech competition on Nov. 16. Highlights included Emery fourth-grader Apollo Meneses, who won first place in storytelling for delivering a spirited telling of the Greek legend of Adonis complete with sound effects.

Emery School fourth-grader Apollo Meneses was the picture of determination as he orated the Greek legend of Adonis, complete with sound effects, to a cheering crowd during Buena Park School District’s inaugural Speech Tournament, held Nov. 16 at Whitaker School. Meneses said he practiced in front of his mother, in front of the mirror and even while he was supposed to be focusing on other work.
After reviewing feedback from more than 400 community members during townhall sessions, Buena Park School District will adjust enrollment boundaries and reconfigure two schools in an effort to balance attendance, strengthen TK-8 pathways and boost program offerings. The unanimous decision, made Dec. 2, will add sixth grade to Buena Park Junior High, turning the campus into a middle school in fall 2020. In addition, Beatty Elementary will be restored to its originally intended use as a middle school, providing greater program depth for students in grades six through eight across the District.
Corey School students are learning to sing, dance and appreciate symphonic music with aid from Disney dance and vocal coaches through a Disney Musicals in Schools grant and from professional symphonic musicians through the Frieda Belinfante Class Act Program. These new offerings are part of the school's revamped visual and performing arts program.

Story Maker, which was introduced at the start of the 2019-20 school year, is an element of the school’s development into a Communications and Media Arts Academy. Story Maker teaches fourth- and fifth-graders to use digital media equipment and applications such as Vimeo and Audacity for video hosting and audio editing.
Buena Park School District to Honor Emery School, Students
Buena Park School District will honor seven Emery School students for exemplifying superb core ethical values and fostering a friendly campus atmosphere during a Board of Education meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16. Emery School administrators will also give a presentation to the Board of Education about its focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). The meeting is at the district office, 6885 Orangethorpe Ave., Buena Park.
Buena Park School District to Host Reconfiguration Townhall Meetings
Buena Park School District will host two townhall meetings to share plans to realign attendance boundaries for its TK-5 schools and to shift Beatty School from a TK-6 school to a middle school. Translation for Spanish and Korean speakers will be available. Buena Park Junior High’s session will take place from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19; Beatty School’s session will take place from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Seventh- and eighth-graders at Buena Park Junior High are mastering Advanced Placement computer science concepts typically taught to high school juniors and seniors – and earning college credit – as part of a partnership designed to promote interest in tech careers. The Computer Science class is offered through a partnership with Anaheim-based nonprofit Cod.Ed Education, teaching computer languages such as Java and Python and programming theories.
