The Buena Park School District hosted 27 guests onto its seven campuses on Sept. 25 for its Principal for a Day. The event provided guests with insight into how each school operates, what students are learning and ways to build partnerships between lawmakers, business owners and educators.
Buena Park School District Offers Ocean-focused STEM Program
Buena Park School District students are learning to swim, build waterproof robots and sail thanks to the Long Beach Sailing Foundation's Middle School science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program. The program is a partnership between the District and the Long Beach Yacht Club. It provides 35 junior high Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students with the opportunity to participate in water-based activities to boost achievement and social-emotional growth. Buena Park Junior High teachers are certified to teach the U.S. Sailing Reach curriculum, which applies classroom STEM learning to careers in ocean conservation, while the program’s sailing coaches are experienced volunteer sailors from the Long Beach Yacht Club.
Buena Park School District’s most well-read third- and fourth-grade students are prepping for the annual Battle of the Books, a competition where students face off to answer trivia questions about novels. The event started as a club for Beatty School’s fourth- through sixth-grade avid readers during the 2012-13 school year by Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) fourth-grade teacher Esther Lee and librarian Kelly Bone to promote literacy and encourage teamwork skills.
Buena Park School District’s Gilbert School held its Back to School Night on Aug. 29, with teachers and administrators providing classroom tours, detailing updates to the curriculum and explaining the school’s new Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program for students in first, fifth and sixth grades.
Buena Park Junior High parents learned how their children will study infectious diseases, bake culinary confections and examine the founding of the United States during the school’s recent Back to School Night. During the Aug. 15 event, teachers, staff and administrators also stressed the importance of parents partnering with the District to build a supportive community to ensure all students excel academically and grow socially and emotionally.

The District welcomed more than 4,520 students across seven campuses, each adorned with colorful banners and chalk messages welcoming students and encouraging responsible behavior.

A lush, green surprise will be waiting for Whitaker School students on the first day of school, with the addition of a new wellness garden, complete with native California plants, fruit-bearing trees and herbs to benefit the entire school.

A lush, green surprise will be waiting for Whitaker School students when they return to school on Tuesday, Aug. 13 – a new wellness garden, complete with native California plants, fruit-bearing trees and herbs to benefit the entire school. Funding for the wellness garden project, which included leveling the ground, clearing weeds, spreading mulch and planting vegetation, was provided by BayWa Renewable Energy and United Way.
