  • Río Hondo College to Host Meet-and-Greet with Working Goat Herd on Campus

    For students, staff or visitors at Río Hondo College (RHC) who may have spotted a herd of goats on campus recently, there was no reason for alarm – they were on official business. The goats were intentionally released on campus on July 18 as part of RHC’s ongoing vegetation management and wildfire prevention efforts. Over the course of two weeks, the goats will visit several designated grazing areas on campus under the supervision of a professional herder and a border collie to ensure they remain within their specified zone. RHC will host a meet-and-greet with the working goat herd to provide students, the college community and visitors the opportunity to learn more about the goat grazing as a wildfire risk reduction, feed and take pictures with the goat herd team

  • Río Hondo College Awarded Nursing Education Grant to Implement VR Technology, Simulation

    Río Hondo College's (RHC) innovative approach to nursing education has garnered it a prestigious spot as one of only four institutions statewide to receive the 2024 Nursing Education Investment Grant from the Foundation for California Community Colleges (FoundationCCC) on June 24. RHC will receive a share of FoundationCCC’s 2024 Nursing Education Investment Grant, which totals $450,000. The College will utilize the funds to partner with UbiSim, a virtual reality (VR) platform for nursing simulation, to equip its lab with immersive VR technology to enhance the clinical experience for its students.

  • Río Hondo College Approves Renaming Campus Quad in Congresswoman Napolitano’s Honor

    A piece of Río Hondo College’s (RHC) campus will forever pay tribute to the legacy of Congresswoman Grace Napolitano long after she retires from public service later this year. The Río Hondo College Board of Trustees unanimously approved renaming the College’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Quad to the Grace F. Napolitano Quad at its July 10 meeting. The dedication honors Congresswoman Napolitano’s extensive contributions and advocacy for RHC, particularly its CTE programs over her 24-plus years in Congress. Napolitano delivered the keynote speech at RHC’s 2022 commencement and helped secure more than $2 million in federal funding to benefit RHC programs throughout her career in Congress. She was first elected to Congress in 1998 and served 13 terms in the House.

Rio Hondo Among First Community Colleges to Offer Law School Pathway

Rio Hondo College will be one of the first community colleges in the state to offer a smoother pathway to six of California’s top law schools by participating in the Community Colleges Pathway to Law School initiative. The Community Colleges Pathway to Law School initiative, which will begin at Rio Hondo College in the fall, is designed to enhance opportunities and advancement in the legal profession for diverse populations, particularly those who have been underrepresented. Rio Hondo College was chosen by the State Bar’s Council on Access and Fairness for its leadership and student success indicators, which will be critical in providing meaningful experiences for students interested in pursuing law. Rio Hondo First-Responder Students Collaborate on Crisis Scenario

Follow-up Story: Follow-up Story: Rio Hondo College students studying to be nurses, emergency medical technicians, firefighters and police officers participated in a Collaborative Crisis Scenario on Friday, May 9 where students will respond to a simulated accident that will include victims, bystanders and a makeshift ER room and ICU. The students were called upon to make critical judgments about victims’ care, take witness statements and participate in triage. Hilda Solis Offered Commencement Address at Rio Hondo College

‘Taste of Rio’ Serves Up Charity and Entertainment for Scholarships

RHC Students to Show Work at Prestigious Ceramics Exhibit

Five art students from Rio Hondo College will be showing and selling their work at the annual “Kilnopening.edu 2014” exhibition at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona from Saturday, April 12 through Tuesday, June 1. Art Vasquez, Alexandro Vergara, Jared Chavez, Carol Sun and Danielle Cansino will showcase and sell their art pieces at the exhibit, which is designed to underscore the importance of college-level ceramics program. ‘Writes of Spring’ to Welcome Best-Selling Author Gustavo Arellano

Nationally syndicated columnist and best-selling author Gustavo Arellano will headline this year’s “Writes of Spring” festival at Rio Hondo College, an event that celebrates the written word while allowing students to interact with professional writers and entertainers. “Writes of Spring,” which takes place Wednesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 24 at the Rio Hondo College Wray Theatre, will feature student and staff work that range from poetry and short stories to monologues and one-act plays. Arellano, editor of the OC Weekly whose famous “¡Ask a Mexican!” column spurred a successful literary career that includes three books and several writing awards, will give his presentation at 9:40 a.m. on April 23. Rio Hondo Professor Presents at International Literature Conference

The Congreso Internacional de Literatura Hispánica (International Congress of Hispanic Literature) is a gathering of authors, professors and others interested in literature in Spanish, who exchange ideas and discuss new literary movements and theories. Award-winning Vocal Ensemble Project ERANOS Performs “American Spring” at Rio Hondo

Rio Hondo College’s Division of Arts and Cultural Programs presents project ERANOS in concert at the Wray Theater at Rio Hondo College. The concert, directed by Ann Gresham with accompaniment by pianist Kyounghee Kim, will take place on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wray Theater. The concert features the music of American composers ranging from Charles Ives and Aaron Copland to Billy Joel, performed by advanced students in the Rio Hondo Music Department. Rio Hondo College and Metro Join to Host Artist Exhibition Feb. 3-28

Working in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Rio Hondo College is hosting “Transitway,” an exhibition featuring the work of four Los Angeles-based artists. The artists, who were commissioned for the Metro El Monte Station, will showcase 16 new and original works from Feb. 3-28 at the Campus Inn Theater. Rio Hondo Students to Lobby Legislators in Sacramento

Three Rio Hondo College students will participate in the annual “March In March” in Sacramento, where they will have an opportunity to lobby legislators. This year, the theme for the event will be “Classroom to Capitol” and is scheduled for Monday, March 3. The event is designed to unify all students from the California Community College system and promises to give students the tools they need to mobilize and make a difference through the Legislature.
