  • Fontana Unified Celebrates Student Achievement and Character at Fourth Annual Black History Month Event

     Fontana Unified School District (FUSD) celebrated academic achievement, strong character, art, and cultural pride at its fourth annual Black History Month celebration on Feb. 7, honoring the achievements and contributions of Black students and families across the District. More than 1,300 Black students in grades 3–12 were recognized for academic success, including high GPAs and excellent attendance. An additional 130 students and parents received Historical Figures Character Awards recognizing their leadership, service, and community engagement.

  • Fontana Unified Band Director Carries Forward a Musical Legacy

    When Henry J. Kaiser High School Catamount Pride and Color Guard band director Roberto Ronquillo arrived to lead the music program at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, he was tasked with replacing a legend, former Kaiser band director Anthony Allmond, who led the music program from the school’s inception in 1998 until his retirement in 2022. It was a steep learning curve for Ronquillo – an A.B. Miller High School Class of 2007 graduate who had previously worked alongside Allmond as a student teacher at Kaiser – but one that has brought its own rewards, with a long list of recent team and individual accolades that have added significantly to Kaiser’s esteemed history. These honors include a first-ever Southern California Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) 2025 Division B championship, along with selections to state and regional honor bands and the Pasadena City College (PCC) Rose Parade Honor Band.

  • Fontana Unified Marching Band Program Seeks to Entertain, Build Character

    The Summit High School Fortepiano String Orchestra will make its way to the Big Apple this April for a return performance at Carnegie Hall’s National Band and Orchestra Festival, continuing the momentum of achievement for the SkyHawks Marching Regiment thanks to instrumental music and band director James Sharp. The Summit High band program – which includes concert band, wind ensemble, prep orchestra, Color Guard, drum line, and the Fortepiano Orchestra – encompasses more than 200 visual and performing arts (VAPA) students in addition to the Summit Majorette squad, which performs at football games and special events.

Fontana Unified Schools Named to California Honor Roll

Dolores Huerta International Academy, Sierra Lakes Elementary and Dorothy Grant Elementary were named to the 2017-18 California Honor Roll for narrowing the achievement gap and producing strong results on state standardized tests. All three Fontana Unified schools were honored as Star Schools, a designation for high-performing schools with substantial populations of socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

Two Fontana Unified Students Invited to National Hispanic Recognition Program

Two Jurupa Hills High School juniors have been invited to participate in the 2018-19 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) for their performance on the PSAT, placing them among the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic and Latino students in their 12-state region. If selected, Angel Guerrero and Kaitlyn Dodgen would be among 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students to be named NHRP Scholars, chosen from a pool of 250,000 high school juniors.

Fontana Unified Grad Named Gates Scholar, to Attend Yale University

Henry J. Kaiser High School graduate Amandeep Heyer will study computer science at Yale University this fall after receiving a 2018 Gates Scholarship, an all-expense-paid award given to just 300 students across the country. After college, Heyer – one of Kaiser’s four Class of 2018 co-valedictorians – dreams of working for a startup company, where he feels he can make a big difference in a smaller, hands-on work environment.

5 Fontana Unified Graduates Named Dell Scholars, Awarded $100,000 in Collective Scholarships

Five Fontana Unified High School graduates who have juggled personal challenges with academic excellence were named 2018 Dell Scholars, earning a collective $100,000 in scholarships for higher education costs. Kaiser High School’s Syeda Arif will attend UC Berkeley to study nutrition and public health; Fontana High School’s Victor Iribe will major in mechanical engineering at Cal State L.A.; Summit High School’s Mary Ambriz will study political science and women’s studies at Occidental College; Summit’s Melissa Cruz will attend UC Irvine to study biological sciences; and Summit’s Maria Medina will major in political science at UC Berkeley.

Fontana High Student Wins $1,000 Scholarship from Carson Scholars Fund

Fontana High School student Andres Larias was named a 2018 Carson Scholars fund recipient, earning a $1,000 college scholarship aimed to support students who display academic excellence and humanitarian qualities. Larias, a high-achieving AP scholar and student-athlete, volunteers at his church, as a peer tutor and on a youth advisory committee.

Fontana Unified Senior Wins 2018 Gates Scholarship

Amandeep Heyer, a senior at Fontana Unified’s Henry J. Kaiser High School, is one of 300 students in the country to receive the all-expense paid 2018 Gates Scholarship. Heyer, who plans to study computer science at Yale University, was also named a 2018 National Merit Scholar.

Fontana Unified to Celebrate Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremonies

Fontana Unified’s comprehensive high schools will hold their annual commencement ceremonies at Citizens Business Bank Arena – 4000 Ontario Center, Ontario – beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, May 21 with Summit High School. Kaiser High School will hold its ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, followed by Fontana High School at 7 p.m. Jurupa Hills High School will hold its event at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 24, and A.B. Miller High will follow at 7 p.m.

Fontana Unified Student to Advance to National History Day Competition

Summit High student Leslie Madrigal will advance to the National History Day competition being held Sunday, June 10 to Thursday, June 14 in Maryland after earning top honors in the state contest in May. Madrigal earned first place in the Senior Individual Exhibit Division for her project titled “The Non-Proliferation Treaty: The Decision to Save the World.” Photos are available

Fontana High CTE Student Advances to SkillsUSA National Competition

Four Summit High School career technical education (CTE) students will advance to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June after earning gold medals during the California SkillsUSA finals, leading an effort that saw 13 Summit competitors win gold, silver, or bronze medals. During the state finals, held virtually in April, Summit juniors Vincent Caudillo and Christian Magana took gold medals in Cybersecurity, an event that saw Summit teams sweep the top four positions. Summit juniors Harsh Patel and Elijah Walker took gold in Robotics and Automation Technology. The winning teams were forged from two of Summit’s signature CTE pathways, Mechatronics and Ethical Hacking.
