  • Fontana Elementary School Receives National Recognition for Preserving O’Day Short Family’s Legacy

    O’Day Short Elementary School and Fontana Unified student Cyrus Moss were honored by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) on May 28 with its Community Remembrance Award, marking a milestone in the school community’s effort to preserve and share the legacy of the O’Day Short family. EJI Senior Attorney Jennifer Taylor presented the award during a recognition assembly, where she addressed students and staff, recognized Moss for his role in leading the school renaming effort, and donated books to the school library. The Community Remembrance Award recognizes efforts to memorialize a community’s history in support of developing a more just future.

    Lynwood Unified School District’s music programs are reaching new heights, with both Lynwood and Marco Antonio Firebaugh high school bands earning “Superior” ratings at music festival events during the spring semester, a first-time achievement for both programs.   • Fontana Unified Board of Education Elevates Student Voices with New Student Board Member

    Fontana Unified School District is elevating student voices in District leadership with the selection of Kaiser High School junior Julian Villeda as the Student Board Member for the 2026-27 school year. In this role, Villeda will represent nearly 32,000 Fontana Unified students, helping bring student perspectives into Board discussions and Districtwide decision-making. Villeda, who boasts a 4.12 GPA, has attended Fontana Unified schools since he was four years old and said he hopes to serve as a bridge between students and District leaders.

Fontana High CTE Student Advances to SkillsUSA National Competition

Four Summit High School career technical education (CTE) students will advance to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June after earning gold medals during the California SkillsUSA finals, leading an effort that saw 13 Summit competitors win gold, silver, or bronze medals. During the state finals, held virtually in April, Summit juniors Vincent Caudillo and Christian Magana took gold medals in Cybersecurity, an event that saw Summit teams sweep the top four positions. Summit juniors Harsh Patel and Elijah Walker took gold in Robotics and Automation Technology. The winning teams were forged from two of Summit’s signature CTE pathways, Mechatronics and Ethical Hacking.

Fontana Unified Names 2018 Classified Employee of the Year

Fontana Unified School District named Heather Castillo, senior secretary at Henry J. Kaiser High School, its 2018 Classified Employee of the Year during the April 18 Board of Education meeting. Fontana Unified Middle-Schoolers Compete in Robotics Contest

Students from Wayne Ruble Middle School’s fledgling robotics program will compete in the FIRST Lego League Spring Showdown on Saturday, April 28 at Legoland after winning the Fontana Unified Regional Robotics Championship Cup on April 7. Team C0D3 scored over 260 points at the regional championship and took first place in robot performance and robot design categories.

Fontana Unified Students to Display STEM Skills at State Science Fair

Five Henry J. Kaiser High School students will exhibit their science projects at the California Science and Engineering Fair Monday, April 23 and Tuesday, April 24 at the California Science Center after winning gold medals in the tri-county fair on April 3. Kaiser senior Abraham Rubalcava and junior Jashandeep Lobana investigated how to reclaim lead from wild plants in their project, which also earned them the Community Award and a $1,000 check from the Professional Engineers of California Government (PECG) to further their education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

A commitment to protecting the environment has brought recognition to five Kaiser High School students, whose science projects earned them gold medals at the SIM Science and Engineering Fair, held April 3 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. Kaiser High senior Abraham Rubalcava and junior Jashandeep Lobana investigated how to reclaim lead from wild plants in their project, “Phytoremediation of Lead through Arabidopsis Thaliana.” In addition to the gold medal, the project earned them the Community Award and a $1,000 check from the Professional Engineers of California Government (PECG) to further their education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
