  • Fontana Unified College Application Submit Day Inspires Seniors to Pursue Higher Education

    Hundreds of Fontana Unified seniors took charge of their futures during a series of College Application Submit Days (CASD) held throughout the District, culminating with a final event at Fontana High School (FOHI) on Nov. 20. FOHI was the first to launch CASD, which was recently honored with a Golden Bell Award, and builds on the school’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) college-prep program. FOHI senior Jimena Lopez submitted eight college applications: four to University of California campuses, and four to California State universities, with plans to study either forensic psychology or psychology. She said that her passion for the field comes from advocating for those she cares about, including her family, her varsity basketball teammates, and classmates.

  • Fontana Unified School District Police Department to Host School Safety Symposium

    The Fontana Unified School District Police Department (FSPD), in partnership with San Bernardino Unified School District, will host its School Safety Symposium on Monday, Nov. 24, bringing together District and school administrators to safety protocols, share best practices, and strengthen collaboration across departments and agencies. The symposium will feature FSPD-led presentations on critical topics impacting schools, including social media and search warrants, human trafficking, fentanyl safety, and identification. The event will include a debrief from Rialto Unified School District representatives on recent emergency response testing to enhance coordination among multiple agencies to ensure a quick, streamlined response is activated during an actual incident.

  • Fontana Unified Police Department Strengthens Community Collaboration with Safety Symposium

    Fontana Unified School District Police Department (FSPD), in partnership with San Bernardino Unified, brought together Southern California school district administrators for its Safety Symposium on Nov. 24, providing an opportunity to strengthen partnerships throughout the area and share strategies for maintaining safe and supportive learning environments. The symposium, last held in 2021, hosted 69 members of the school policing community and school district staff from Indio to La Puente and San Diego, featuring a full day of presentations covering current issues impacting schools, including social media and search warrants, human trafficking, fentanyl safety and identification, cannabis and juvenile laws, and building relationships with school administration.

Fontana Unified Elementary Students Explore Future Job Opportunities with ‘Careers Alive Museum’

Dressing as world leaders, business people and artisans, Canyon Crest Elementary School students led the Fontana community through a “Careers Alive Museum” on June 8, demonstrating in words and visuals what the professions of their future will look like. The museum concluded a two-week college and career exploration camp in which students researched job opportunities and applied their knowledge to create exhibits, design costumes and give presentations on a variety of technological platforms. Fontana Unified Schools Named to California Honor Roll

Dolores Huerta International Academy, Sierra Lakes Elementary and Dorothy Grant Elementary were named to the 2017-18 California Honor Roll for narrowing the achievement gap and producing strong results on state standardized tests. All three Fontana Unified schools were honored as Star Schools, a designation for high-performing schools with substantial populations of socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

Two Fontana Unified Students Invited to National Hispanic Recognition Program

Two Jurupa Hills High School juniors have been invited to participate in the 2018-19 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) for their performance on the PSAT, placing them among the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic and Latino students in their 12-state region. If selected, Angel Guerrero and Kaitlyn Dodgen would be among 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students to be named NHRP Scholars, chosen from a pool of 250,000 high school juniors.

Fontana Unified Grad Named Gates Scholar, to Attend Yale University

Henry J. Kaiser High School graduate Amandeep Heyer will study computer science at Yale University this fall after receiving a 2018 Gates Scholarship, an all-expense-paid award given to just 300 students across the country. After college, Heyer – one of Kaiser’s four Class of 2018 co-valedictorians – dreams of working for a startup company, where he feels he can make a big difference in a smaller, hands-on work environment.

5 Fontana Unified Graduates Named Dell Scholars, Awarded $100,000 in Collective Scholarships

Five Fontana Unified High School graduates who have juggled personal challenges with academic excellence were named 2018 Dell Scholars, earning a collective $100,000 in scholarships for higher education costs. Kaiser High School’s Syeda Arif will attend UC Berkeley to study nutrition and public health; Fontana High School’s Victor Iribe will major in mechanical engineering at Cal State L.A.; Summit High School’s Mary Ambriz will study political science and women’s studies at Occidental College; Summit’s Melissa Cruz will attend UC Irvine to study biological sciences; and Summit’s Maria Medina will major in political science at UC Berkeley.

Fontana High Student Wins $1,000 Scholarship from Carson Scholars Fund

Fontana High School student Andres Larias was named a 2018 Carson Scholars fund recipient, earning a $1,000 college scholarship aimed to support students who display academic excellence and humanitarian qualities. Larias, a high-achieving AP scholar and student-athlete, volunteers at his church, as a peer tutor and on a youth advisory committee.

Fontana Unified Senior Wins 2018 Gates Scholarship

Amandeep Heyer, a senior at Fontana Unified’s Henry J. Kaiser High School, is one of 300 students in the country to receive the all-expense paid 2018 Gates Scholarship. Heyer, who plans to study computer science at Yale University, was also named a 2018 National Merit Scholar.

Fontana Unified to Celebrate Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremonies

Fontana Unified’s comprehensive high schools will hold their annual commencement ceremonies at Citizens Business Bank Arena – 4000 Ontario Center, Ontario – beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, May 21 with Summit High School. Kaiser High School will hold its ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, followed by Fontana High School at 7 p.m. Jurupa Hills High School will hold its event at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 24, and A.B. Miller High will follow at 7 p.m.

Fontana Unified Student to Advance to National History Day Competition

Summit High student Leslie Madrigal will advance to the National History Day competition being held Sunday, June 10 to Thursday, June 14 in Maryland after earning top honors in the state contest in May. Madrigal earned first place in the Senior Individual Exhibit Division for her project titled “The Non-Proliferation Treaty: The Decision to Save the World.” Photos are available
