  • Five Fontana Unified Students Earn Top Awards in San Bernardino County Fair Youth Arts Competition

    A.B. Miller High School students wowed judges with their original artwork, as five students earned top honors, including two Best of Show awards, at the 2024 San Bernardino County Fair (SBCF)’s highly competitive Youth Arts Competition. Evalena Carbajal and April Garcia won Best of Show awards in the SBCF’s Youth Arts poetry and Día De Los Muertos divisions, respectively. The competition was open to all San Bernardino County residents. A.B. Miller students took first and second in both divisions and swept the top three places in poetry, with Jasmine Mojica and Bella Rojas taking second and third place in poetry, while Adriana Sánchez took second in the Día De Los Muertos division. All five works resulted from projects A.B. Miller students worked on throughout the school year in Spanish teacher Dr. Sybil Acevedo’s class. Each year, Dr. Acevedo collects and submits the pieces to the SBCF – covering the cost of submission herself.

  • Fontana Unified Honored at State Level for Record-Setting Attendance and Student Engagement Efforts

    Fontana Unified School District’s work to increase student attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism culminated in the District’s School Attendance Review Board (SARB) being recognized as one of California’s 23 model SARBs for 2024. FUSD posted a 94% attendance rate while dropping its chronic absenteeism rate from 30% to 20% for 2023-24. Throughout the year, the District hosts campaigns to help boost its attendance and also organizes its annual Perfect Attendance Spells Success event, which celebrates and rewards students for their exceptional attendance and academic achievements.

  • Fontana Unified Kitchen Operator Honored with 2024 Hunger Hero Award for Commitment to Child Nutrition

    Virginia Primrose Elementary School Kitchen Operator Nailly Salib has been recognized for her dedication to fighting child hunger and commitment to supporting school meals, earning a 2024 Hunger Hero Award from the No Kid Hungry national campaign. City of Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren and No Kid Hungry School Meals Access Manager Robin Hernandez presented the award, along with a certificate, a trophy, and goodie bags, to Salib during Primrose Elementary’s fifth-grade promotion ceremony. Warren honored Salib’s dedication to ending hunger with a speech during the event, which was also attended by Fontana Unified Superintendent Miki R. Inbody and Board of Education President Marcelino “Mars” Serna, on May 24. Every May, No Kid Hungry – a campaign of Share Our Strength, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger – celebrates school employees and programs that ensure every child has the nutrition they need to reach their full potential.

Fontana High Class of 2021 Celebrates Nearly 70 Acceptances to UC Riverside

Nearly 70 Fontana High School seniors have earned acceptances to UC Riverside, an achievement supported by the school’s robust academic support programs and a campus-wide effort to bolster college and career readiness. UC Riverside honored the admitted students in a FOHI-exclusive live virtual event on April 14, where students had the opportunity to connect with current UC Riverside students and an admissions counselor, ask questions and receive guidance as they weigh their college options. Fontana High School fosters a strong college-going culture through its robust Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program and an annual College Application Day; this year, FOHI seniors submitted more than 2,100 college applications.

Fontana Unified Elementary Schools Welcome TK-2 Students to Campus for In-Person Instruction

Fontana Unified students in transitional kindergarten through second grade were greeted by cheerful signs, lively music and friendly faces as they returned to campus for their first days of in-person instruction on April 5. Instruction is offered in a hybrid model with three cohorts of students; Cohorts A and B receive a blend of in-person and online instruction, while students in Cohort C remain in full distance learning. TK-2 student cohorts were welcomed back to campus on April 5 and 8; grades three to five will return on Monday, April 12 and Thursday, April 15. The District’s return to in-person instruction for elementary students was supported by comprehensive health and safety measures, including weekly testing, partnerships to provide COVID-19 vaccines and advanced cleaning technologies. Four Fontana High School Students Named 2021 Dell Scholars, Receive $20,000 Scholarships

Fontana High School seniors Victor Campos, Karen Hurtado-Mendez, Phillip Olguin and Kimberly Sandoval have been named 2021 Dell Scholars by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, an honor that comes with $20,000 scholarships to support their dreams of higher education. All four honorees are high-achieving scholars, with plans to attend four-year universities – such as UC Irvine, UCLA and University of La Verne – and pursue careers that support community betterment. As Dell Scholars, Campos, Hurtado-Mendez, Olguin and Sandoval will receive their scholarships over four years, as well as a laptop and textbook credits.

Fontana Unified Begins Return to In-Person Elementary Instruction April 5

Fontana Unified School District will initiate a phased return to in-person instruction for elementary school students, welcoming transitional kindergarteners through second-grade students back to campus on Monday, April 5 and grades three to five on Monday, April 12. Under the Board of Education-approved modified hybrid instructional model, each class will be split into three cohorts: Cohort A will receive in-person instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays and Cohort B will engage in distance learning; Cohort B will receive in-person instruction on Thursdays and Fridays and Cohort A will participate in distance learning; and students in Cohort C will remain in full distance learning. Wednesdays will be dedicated to wellness and attendance checks, as well as teacher/administrator-directed time. Deep cleaning and sanitation would also take place on Wednesdays

Fontana Unified Elementary School Student Lifts Spirits, Supports Peers with Gift Card Fundraising Drive

Canyon Crest Elementary School fifth-grader Noah Walker wanted to do more to help families facing hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Initiating a community fundraiser, Walker raised approximately $650 and used it to purchase a variety of gift cards – including McDonalds, Target, and other food-related cards – for selected Canyon Crest families. The gift cards were distributed from March 29 to April 2, providing families in need with additional support.

Fontana Unified Opens Applications for Spanish Dual-Language Program

Fontana Unified School District is accepting applications for 2021-22 enrollment in its Spanish Dual-Language Immersion (DLI) program, which begins in kindergarten and is offered at Redwood Elementary School and Dolores Huerta International Academy. Fontana Unified Educator Named Redwood Elementary School Principal

Fontana Unified educator Jorge Arauz has been named principal of Redwood Elementary School, bringing 21 years of experience to the role. Arauz takes the helm at Redwood Elementary School after serving as an assistant principal in the District for nearly five years. He was instrumental in bringing new educational opportunities to Southridge Tech Middle School, aiding in its transformation into a Microsoft Showcase School and furthering the school’s candidacy to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme. Arauz’s efforts to engage students in a globally focused education and celebrate multiculturalism and diversity will continue at Redwood Elementary, which offers a Spanish Dual-Language Immersion program.

Fontana Unified Elementary School to Provide Students with Plush Therapy Tools, Bolster Personal Connection

Almond Elementary School showed appreciation to students and families on March 31, presenting them with therapy dolls designed to provide comfort and reestablish much-needed personal connections. Every Almond student received a Mimbleball, a five-inch round polyester doll with button eyes and long acrylic hair, that helps relieve stress and anxiety and can be enjoyed by all age groups. The Mimbleballs were distributed during the school’s weekly meal distribution, with principal Tim McCaffrey greeting students dressed as a giant Mimbleball.

Fontana Unified Career Technical Education Students Go for the Gold in SkillsUSA Competition, Advance to State Contest

Summit High School career technical education (CTE) students delivered impressive performances at the SkillsUSA Region 6 2021 Virtual Leadership and Skill Conference, earning 15 gold medals and sending 46 students to the state finals, to be held in April. From entrepreneurship and cyber security to pin design, Summit students rose to the challenge of the virtual format, medaling or placing in 17 separate categories. Medalists included Aaron Vera, Emma Hernandez, Natalia Ramirez and Jade Centeno, who captured gold in Entrepreneurship for their startup app Wisteria, a healthcare platform that allows users to access a wide range of mental health services and resources, with the goal of increasing equity in mental health resources for underrepresented populations.
