Follow-up Story: South El Monte High School celebrated 25 years in the South El Monte community on Sept. 22 with a homecoming parade from City Hall to Eagle Stadium, led by the school’s drill team, cheer squad, band and color guard. The parade featured current SEMHS staff who opened the school 25 years ago and dignitaries from the District and city. Boxer and SEMHS alum Joseph “Jojo” Diaz, Jr. served as grand marshal. Latino pop singer and SEMHS alum Raymundo Monge performed the National Anthem at the game, in which SEMHS was victorious over Mountain View High, 35-8. The event also featured coronation of a homecoming king and queen.
Follow-up Story: Hundreds of El Monte Union High School District students on Oct. 9 attended the District’s annual College Night and Career Resource Fair at Arroyo High School, which hosted more than 50 colleges and universities that provided information on programs, activities, entrance requirements and degrees offered. The event featured representatives from various student support services and college access programs, as well as college workshops.
Follow-up Story: El Monte Union High School District has launched a Facebook page and smartphone app with the latest news on activities and initiatives. The social media page is one of EMUHSD’s newest methods of sharing news to parents, teachers, staff and students. It will focus on student success stories, school and District achievements, news alerts and construction project updates. The District’s Facebook page is available at www.facebook.com/ElMonteUHSD, while the app can be downloaded via Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
El Monte Union high schools are promoting regular school attendance among the thousands of students they serve with imaginative and positive reward systems that build on school spirit, including field trips, raffles and friendly competitions. As a result, District attendance rates have steadily climbed to nearly 100 percent, rising from 96.77 percent in 2013-14 to 97.29 percent in 2016-17, exceeding rates posted by surrounding school districts.

Follow-up Story: South El Monte High School celebrated its newly upgraded field house – enhanced with new restrooms, lockers and showers, furniture and athletic equipment – at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 18. The facility includes a unisex restroom, two physical education classrooms, a weight room for instruction and co-curricular activities, and team meeting areas.
El Monte High School will break ground on a stadium project, celebrating $6.6 million in upgrades planned over the next nine months that will include a snack bar, restrooms and three sets of bleachers seating more than 2,000 spectators. The stadium also will receive new fencing, landscaping, a gate entrance and ticket booth. The ceremony, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, will feature remarks from Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga and Board of Trustees President Carlos Salcedo. El Monte Union High School to Hold Final 2017-18 Back-to-school Night
El Monte Union High School District’s Fernando R. Ledesma Continuation High School will hold its back-to-school program at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. The event concludes a series of such events at each District high school.
