Rosemead High School is poised to retroactively award a high school diploma to a longtime community member who dropped out of high school just weeks ahead of graduation to join the Navy during World War II. Kelly Crowell – a 60-year Temple City resident who has volunteered as a pitching coach for the Rosemead High girls’ softball team for six years – will join the Class of 2018 at the school’s commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31. Other graduations taking place that day are Fernando R. Ledesma High at 5 p.m. at the high school; South El Monte High School at 6 p.m. at SEMHS Eagle Stadium; Arroyo High School at 7 p.m. at AHS Bergstrom Stadium; El Monte High School at 7 p.m. at EMHS Lion Field; Mountain View High School at 7 p.m. at MVHS Viking Stadium. The El Monte-Rosemead Adult School will celebrate students at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the Rosemead High Auditorium.
Roosevelt Elementary students will educate their peers on college majors, programs and campuses during the school’s College Fair from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22. Each Roosevelt classroom adopted a college to research at the beginning of the year. Students will present their findings with visual aids such as pamphlets from universities and graduation regalia. Roosevelt is at 10835 Mallison Ave., Lynwood.
Fontana Unified to Celebrate Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremonies
Fontana Unified’s comprehensive high schools will hold their annual commencement ceremonies at Citizens Business Bank Arena – 4000 Ontario Center, Ontario – beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, May 21 with Summit High School. Kaiser High School will hold its ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, followed by Fontana High School at 7 p.m. Jurupa Hills High School will hold its event at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 24, and A.B. Miller High will follow at 7 p.m.
Lynwood Unified to Hold 4th Annual Parent University Commencement
More than 200 Lynwood Unified parents are expected to celebrate their participation in the District’s parent education program during the fourth annual Parent University commencement event from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Parents who completed Parent University workshops throughout the year will gather at Marshall Elementary School, 3593 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lynwood.
Students at Lynwood Unified’s Hosler Middle School walked, jogged and ran to support their community during the second annual Autism Walk, raising $2,000 for the Autism Speaks organization. The My Buddy Club, which consists of seventh-graders in special education, reached out to peers, teachers and parents to help raise funds for autism awareness – tripling the amount raised during last year’s walk.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School and Santa Fe School were named to the 2017-18 California Honor Roll on May 16, a recognition of their academic success, improvement over time and narrowing of the achievement gap. The honor is given by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE), based on the results of state standardized tests in math and English language arts (ELA) taken in spring 2017. Each school was named a Star School, a category for schools that have a third or more students from high-poverty homes. Each will receive a banner and be recognized on a website as a model for other schools.
Baldwin Park Unified will host a 12-hour Relay for Life of Baldwin Park event from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at Baldwin Park High School to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer. The event will feature survivor and caregiver celebrations, a luminaria celebration of family members who have been touched by the disease. There also will be entertainment, activities and food. The relay event follows a week of fundraising by students at the District’s 20 schools. The high school is at 3900 Puente Ave., Baldwin Park.
A Baldwin Park Unified high school senior who dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and eight other exceptional seniors received $10,000 in scholarships on May 10 from Baldwin Park Unified administrators, teachers and community supporters. The top honor at the Joint Scholarship Ceremony went to Alana Resendez, a bilingual student at Sierra Vista High School who has been inspired to study medicine by her mother’s battle against a neurological disease. Resendez received a $5,000 prize from the Ramona Burnham Scholarship Foundation.
Summit High student Leslie Madrigal will advance to the National History Day competition being held Sunday, June 10 to Thursday, June 14 in Maryland after earning top honors in the state contest in May. Madrigal earned first place in the Senior Individual Exhibit Division for her project titled “The Non-Proliferation Treaty: The Decision to Save the World.” Photos are available
Carlos Ortiz, a senior at Baldwin Park Unified's Sierra Vista High School, is one of 300 U.S. high school students chosen for the inaugural Gates Scholarship. Ortiz says his appreciation for his parents’ sacrifices drives his desire to succeed. Ortiz earned a perfect 4.0 GPA (4.47 weighted), took 10 Advanced Placement classes and four honors courses and won acceptance to UC Berkeley.
