Monrovia’s Clifton Middle School Participates in Great California Shakeout

Students from Clifton Middle School took part in the annual Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill on Oct. 17. As students made their way to the school’s field for an attendance check, a search and rescue team conducted a mock search for injured students and staff. The drill helps schools prepare for a potential major earthquake.

City of Lynwood Appoints ‘Kid Mayors’ at 12 Lynwood Unified Schools

Twelve students at Lynwood Unified schools were honored by the Lynwood City Council on Oct. 15 with appointments as “Kid Mayor.” The “Kid Mayor” program was created by Lynwood Mayor Jose Solache to inspire more young people to get involved in public service. All 12 will get the opportunity to ride on the Lynwood city float during the Candy Cane Lane Parade on Dec. 6.

Fontana Unified Recognized for Workplace Wellness Program

Fontana Unified School District was honored with a Bronze Workplace Health Solutions Award by the American Heart Association (AHA) for promoting wellness in the workplace in 2018-19. The District held its annual Wellness Fair on Oct. 16, providing teachers, staff and administrators with health and wellness information, free medical, dental and vision screenings, massages and information about the open enrollment period. Twice a year, the District also provides its employees with a voluntary wellness challenge.

West Covina Unified Student Wins Prize at ‘Hacking Medicine’ Event

Edgewood High School senior Vanessa Li captured the third-place UCSF Rosenman Institute Prize in the category of medicine at the MIT Hacking Medicine Grand Hack event on Oct. 13. Li and her team were celebrated for designing a simple, discreet and efficient way of testing for HIV. She was the only high school student in the event and competed alongside college students and working professionals. The UCSF Rosenman Institute Prize provides winners with legal support, intellectual property consultation and pitch desk coaching.

LA Chargers Cornerback Mike Davis Encourages Inglewood Students

Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Mike Davis sent a 30-second audio message to Inglewood students encouraging them to maintain strong attendance. The District has launched an attendance campaign this year with a goal of each student missing no more than seven days in 2019-20. Davis challenged the District’s students to stick to the plan to achieve their goals in the classroom.

Baldwin Park Unified to Lead Regional Expansion of Early Learning Programs

Baldwin Park Unified has received a $1.69 million grant from the federal Office of Head Start to lead a regional Early Head Start program that serves communities across Los Angeles County. BPUSD’s Early Childhood Education program will serve 72 students and their families. BPUSD also received $1.2 million for startup costs and to construct and operate a modular building in the City of Bell.

Fontana Unified Middle School to Host Día de los Muertos Festival

Southridge Tech Middle School will hold its third annual Día de los Muertos Festival from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Families are invited to enjoy refreshments and Mariachi, baile folklórico and Aztec dance performances. Southridge Tech Middle School is at 14500 Live Oak Ave., Fontana.

Baldwin Park High School to Host Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration

Baldwin Park Unified’s Baldwin Park High School will host its ninth annual Día de los Muertos Celebration from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, featuring live music, face painting, food and refreshments, an art gallery and an altar-decorating competition. Hosted by Baldwin Park High School’s Dual Language program, the event will be at 3900 Puente Ave., Baldwin Park.

Baldwin Park Unified to Take Part in Lights on Afterschool Event

Baldwin Park Unified will highlight the importance of after-school programs during a nationwide Lights on Afterschool celebration from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at De Anza Elementary School, 12820 Bess St., Baldwin Park. Students, families, educators and teachers from Think Together, the nonprofit that runs the District’s after-school program, will play sports and explore academic opportunities.

El Monte Union Students to Learn Budgeting Skills During Mad City Money

More than 100 El Monte Union business and finance students will receive a crash course in personal finance management during Mad City Money, a hands-on simulation that presents students with many aspects of working life – a job, set income, a family and debt. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 24 at El Monte High School, 3048 Tyler Ave., El Monte.
