Monrovia Unified’s Bradoaks Elementary Students Explore the Night Sky

Bradoaks Elementary second-grader Brendon Rose held onto the lens of a powerful telescope and searched the stars for a glimpse of Saturn, Jupiter and Venus during a “Telescopes in the Sky” Moon Party family event that celebrated the school's effort to transition to a science emphasis school. “Telescopes in the Sky” is an example of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) events that Bradoaks Elementary plans to implement as it transitions to a science emphasis school.

Fontana Unified Computer Science School to Hold Epic Build Showcase

Chaparral Academy of Technology – one of Fontana Unified’s two Code to the Future schools – will hold its second Epic Build Showcase of the year at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb, 28. Students will demonstrate the skills they are learning through Chaparral’s immersive computer science curriculum, including coding, building and programming LEGO robots. Chaparral Academy of Technology is at 14000 Shadow Drive, Fontana.

West Covina Unified’s Mt. SAC Early College Academy to Hold Enrollment Info Sessions

Mt. SAC Early College Academy will host prospective families for a series of information sessions, providing details about the benefits of attending West Covina Unified’s flagship dual-enrollment public high school. The Academy, which opened in fall 2018, provides students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and up to two years of free, transferable college credit simultaneously.

Pumpkin Drop to Mesh Science and Halloween Fun for Bradoaks Elementary Students

Bradoaks Elementary students will put science to the test as Monrovia firefighters, perched atop their fire engine ladder, drop pumpkins – some carved, some not – to determine which can generate the largest splat. Students have been integrating the theme of pumpkins into their science and reading lessons all month. The pumpkin drop serves as the culminating activity. Two pumpkins will be dropped per grade level during the event, which is sponsored by the Bradoaks PTA.

Whittier Union to Celebrate Music and Cheer at Annual Jamboree Nov. 4

Whittier Union will celebrate student musical and dance performances at its 2019 Whittier Union High School District Band, Color Guard and Pepster Jamboree, an annual community event that features the District’s five comprehensive high school marching bands, color guards, cheer squads, song and drill team. The showcase marks the ending of the band and color guard field show season. It will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at the Sandra Sanchez Thorstenson Stadium at California High School, 9800 Mills Ave., Whittier.

El Monte Students Learn Money Management Skills during Mad City Money Competition

More than 150 El Monte Union business and finance students took on the role of adults and were hit with a dose of reality when they had to learn to be responsible for their own financial planning, oversee monthly expenditures and tackle credit card debt during Mad City Money, a realistic simulation held Oct. 24 at El Monte High School. Paired with a partner and assigned personal profiles with an occupation, a young child and a monthly salary, students had to deduct taxes, student loan payments, medical insurance and credit card debt from their income and visit merchants to purchase housing, transportation, food, clothing and childcare necessities. Every once in a while, students were hit with unexpected expenses and windfalls that they had to factor in.

Whittier Union Seniors Named National Merit Commended Scholars

Five Whittier Union High School District students have been recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars for being among the top 34,000 students in the nation to receive high scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The nationally recognized students are seniors Cole Aedo, Ian Brennan, Kelvin Chong and Katelyn Nye from La Serna High School and senior Julia Casas from Whittier High School.

Paramount Seniors Honored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Paramount High School senior Rebecca Mejia has been recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar and seniors Edward Quezada and Jocelyn Ureña have received certificates from the National Hispanic Recognition Program for outstanding scholastic achievement. Mejia was recognized for finishing near the top 34,000 in the U.S. in the 2018 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. A four-year varsity cross country athlete, she maintains a 4.41 GPA and hopes to pursue environmental studies at UC Davis. She also created a green club among her cross country team members that picks up trash at Paramount High School’s West Campus.

El Monte Union Art Showcase Highlights Award-Winning Student Art

El Monte Union shined a spotlight on its creative student artists during the 20th annual District Art Show, which featured more than 150 works that earned accolades at the 2019 Los Angeles County Fair “America’s Kids” Arts Competition. More than 200 students from El Monte Union’s five comprehensive high schools, who contributed art for the Oct. 22 event, received corsages and certificates of recognition from the District for their artistry.

Paramount Unified Students Studies Careers through Internship Program

Students at Paramount Unified’s Odyssey STEM Academy are learning from successful professionals in a variety of careers through the school’s eight-week Living to Learn internship programs. Students spend two days per week in their fields of study with mentors who immerse them in real-world careers.
