  • Lynwood Unified Dreamers Unlock Potential, Inspired to Achieve College Dreams

    Dreamer students from Lynwood Unified School District were empowered with vital support, resources and the inspiration to chase their higher education aspirations during the District’s annual Dreamers Conference on April 19, dedicated to the memory of former California Assemblyman and immigrant rights and education trailblazer, Marco Antonio Firebaugh. During the conference, now in its eighth year, Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools students heard from inspiring speakers Andrew Roldan, a Lynwood alumnus, community leader Francisco Moreno and entrepreneur Vincent Ortiz, who shared their moving stories and firsthand advice on navigating challenges as undocumented students, known as Dreamers. Informative workshops covered the misconceptions about college access, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), financial aid and scholarships. Students also accessed financial, legal and health resources.

  • Lynwood Unified Rising Scholar Earns $50,000 Edison STEM Scholarship

    Firebaugh High School senior and avid engineering enthusiast Brigitte Lopez is among 30 Southern California students to be named a 2024 Edison Scholar, earning a $50,000 scholarship for her outstanding academic performance and dedication to shaping a clean energy future. Lopez, who earned early admission to Stanford University for the upcoming fall semester, plans to major in aerospace engineering. She aspires to work at NASA or SpaceX and drive innovation with an environmentally conscious approach to technology while promoting diversity and inclusivity in the STEM field.

  • Lynwood Unified Celebrates Female Leadership During Annual Girl Empowerment Summit

    Lynwood Unified School District students embraced girl power during the second annual Girl Empowerment Summit on March 28, where they heard from influential female community leaders and participated in breakout sessions and discussions designed to educate and inspire them to chase their dreams fearlessly. The Summit – organized by students from the Girl Empowerment Clubs at Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools – served as an inspiring conclusion to Women’s History Month celebrations across the District, with Hosler and Cesar Chavez middle school students finding the courage to break barriers and carve a path toward powerful journeys.

Lynwood Unified Educators Prepare for School Year at Summer Institute

Lynwood Unified staff members received new training and discussed site initiatives in preparation for the new school year during a three-day professional development Aug. 14-16 at Firebaugh High School. Teachers of all grades and staff members met to solidify school culture, review data and strategize for the year. The event reviewed programs like Advancement Via Individual Determination and the new Journeys reading program.

Lynwood Unified Staff to Prepare for Year with Superintendent’s Address

More than 1,000 Lynwood Unified staff members will come together for a superintendent’s address that will celebrate the District’s successes and address challenges for the 2018-19 year on Monday, Aug. 20 at Lynwood High School, 4050 E Imperial Hwy., Lynwood. Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite will address attendees alongside students and members of the Board of Education.

Lynwood High School Band to Showcase at SELA Arts Festival

The Lynwood High School band will perform alongside local musical artists at the annual Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) Arts Festival from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at the L.A. River Channel, 5400 Monroe Ave., South Gate. The event celebrates arts and culture in the region, and will include theater, dance and food.

Lynwood Unified Boosts Student Performance, Cultural Awareness

Lynwood Unified School District’s Equity Department completed a second successful year of inspiring students while fostering equality and participating in more than 40 events. Led by director Dr. Patricia Brent-Sanco, the Equity Department partnered with the National College Resources Foundation’s Movement Program, which employs peer advisers to improve classroom performance. All Lynwood, Firebaugh and Vista high school students in the program improved their grades. Photos are available.

Lynwood Unified’s Firebaugh High School Celebrates Commencement

More than 300 seniors from Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School’s Class of 2018 celebrated commencement on June 14, stepping into the next stage of their academic and professional lives. Valedictorian Kimberly Wenceslao, who earned a 4.56 GPA, will attend Yale University. Salutatorian Ruby Gordillo, with a 4.43 GPA, will attend UCLA.

Lynwood Grads Inspire Young Students with Senior Walk

The Lynwood Unified Class of 2018 walked the halls of the District’s elementary and middle schools dressed in their caps and gowns as part of Senior Walk, a two-day celebration honoring the soon-to-be-graduates and inspiring younger students to graduate. Nearly 750 seniors took part in this year’s Senior Walk, with students from Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools touring the District’s 12 elementary schools and three middle schools over two days, teaching younger students about what they can achieve in the future.

District to Honor Students Traveling to Rwanda to Perform in Arts Festival

The Lynwood Unified Board of Education will recognize eighth-graders Zion Bennett and Jose Laguna, who have been selected to journey to Rwanda from July 3-16 to showcase their acting and writing talents as a part of the District’s Building Relationships and Inspiring Dialogue through Global Exchange (BRIDGE) Theatre Project. Bennett and Laguna were chosen from more than 500 District students who participate in the program. Bennett co-wrote an original play, “Great Minds Alike,” a story about female empowerment which will be performed at the annual Ubumuntu Arts Festival next month. In exchange, the Lynwood students will perform a play written by Rwandan students at the festival.

Lynwood Unified Commencement Ceremonies Celebrate Class of 2018

Lynwood Unified held graduation ceremonies in for its comprehensive high schools and alternative high school; all ceremonies were held at Lynwood High School. Vista High School held its ceremony on June 13 in the gym; Firebaugh High School held its ceremony on June 14 on the field; Lynwood High School celebrated on June 15 on the field.
