  • Lynwood Unified Joins Forces to Transform 10 Campuses into Green, Sustainable Spaces

    Lynwood Unified School District is teaming up with SLA Inc. to transform 10 school sites and campuses into sustainable green spaces in which to learn and grow through The Lynwood Greening Initiative, a project funded by nearly $2 million in CAL FIRE grants. The initiative, which will roll out over the next three years, will revamp 10 sites – Firebaugh High School, Hosler Middle School and Mark Twain, Helen Keller, Lincoln, Lugo, Roosevelt and Washington elementary schools, and the Early Childhood Education (ECE) centers at Lindbergh and Will Rogers elementary schools – into eco-friendly hubs that reflect the community’s vision while providing students with hands-on environmental learning experiences.

  • Lynwood Unified’s Annual Teen Summit Empowers Black Teens with Leadership, Pride

    More than 150 Lynwood Unified School District high school students gathered for a day of empowerment, connection and self-discovery at the District’s annual Teen Summit on Feb. 20, engaging in impactful discussions on leadership, resilience and personal growth. A staple District event rooted in inclusivity and equity, the Teen Summit provided African American students from its three high schools with a dedicated space to explore their identity, gain inspiration from role models, and build a sense of culture and community with their peers.

Lynwood High Students Visited by Historically Black Colleges

Lynwood Unified High School students received the opportunity to earn on-the-spot acceptance to Historically Black Colleges and Universities when a caravan of HBCU college recruiters and admission counselors visited LUSD campuses on Feb. 1. The schools included Tuskegee University, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and Harris-Stowe State University.

Lynwood High Dance Teacher to Perform with Los Angeles Rams During Super Bowl

When the Los Angeles Rams take the field for Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3 in Atlanta, a piece of Lynwood will join them. Lynwood High School teacher Brittany Washington will carry Lynwood to the biggest stage in sports when she performs in front of 75,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and millions tuning in across the country as a member of the Rams’ cheerleading squad. Washington, Lynwood High’s Career Technical Education (CTE) dance instructor and cheer coach, is a third-year cheerleader for the Rams and a seasoned performer, but she admits to crying tears of joy when she learned she would be showcased at the Super Bowl.

Lynwood to Help Parents Better Connect with Students through Workshop

Lynwood Unified will hold a family engagement workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the Lindbergh Elementary School Parent Center to help parents inspire and connect with their children. The session will tackle how to teach children and young adults to appreciate themselves and others. Light refreshments, childcare and Spanish translation will be provided. The center is at 3300 Agnes St., Lynwood.

Lynwood Students Receive Scholarships to Study Abroad during Summer

Four Lynwood High School students received all-expenses-paid Global Navigator Scholarships to study abroad this summer. Junior Melanie Pacheco will venture to Spain, juniors Crystal Cervantes and Daniel Perez will visit Germany and freshman Alicia Norberto will spend time in Japan during four-week trips in June and July that immerse the students in language and culture. The students wrote essays, demonstrated leadership and competence in their country’s language to enter the program.

Lynwood Unified Students Explore How to Make Positive Impacts

More than 200 Lynwood Unified African American students connected with successful leaders at the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Conference on Jan. 29 at Firebaugh High School. Young Black Achievers Student Union (YBASU) members from Firebaugh, Lynwood and Vista high schools were joined by guest panelists as the group explored how students can make positive impacts.

Lynwood Unified Students to Host Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Event

Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School’s Helping Hands Club will give away clothing, toys and other gifts while providing food and entertainment at noon Saturday, Jan. 12 during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event promoting unity. The festivities take place at Firebaugh High School’s Falcon Square, 5246 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lynwood.

Lynwood Unified Elementary Students Showcase Artwork for NYE Celebration at LA Capital Building

Artwork created by Wilson Elementary School fifth-grade students Tatiana Cato, Leonardo Guzman, Jessie Ramirez, Carla del Villar, Mario Guerrero and Isaac Morales was featured in a 3-D projection on the Los Angeles City Hall building on Dec. 31. The art appeared as part of the Grand Park and the Music Center's New Year's Eve celebration and was made possible by the Lynwood Unified school’s Turnaround Arts: California program.
