  • Lynwood Unified Kicks Off New School Year Filled with Innovation, Purpose & Opportunity

    Lynwood Unified kicked off the 2025-26 school year on Aug. 13 with lively music, balloon arches and cheers for nearly 11,000 students returning to 17 campuses. From Transitional Kindergarten to 12th grade, students were welcomed by spirited staff, fresh campus upgrades, expanded dual enrollment opportunities – and a new superintendent ready to lead a year of innovation, inclusion and purpose. To help students start the year strong, all elementary schools hosted a Kinder Jumpstart on Aug. 8, giving young learners the chance to explore classrooms, meet teachers and get comfortable with their new school environment. On the first day of school, students across campuses were greeted by educators and staff committed to creating inclusive spaces where every scholar feels empowered to learn, grow and thrive.

  • Lynwood Unified’s Kinder Jumpstart Gives Youngest Scholars a Confident Start to School

    Classrooms across Lynwood Unified School District were filled with bright smiles and eager energy on Aug. 8 as hundreds of incoming Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten students and their families participated in the District’s inaugural Kinder Jumpstart event, held just days before the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The special welcome day, hosted at all 12 elementary schools, began with cheerful back-to-school photo opportunities, colorful “Welcome to Kindergarten” signs, and festive balloon displays that set the tone for a day filled with excitement. Students met their teachers, explored their classrooms and took part in activities designed to ease first-day jitters – from read-aloud story time and outdoor recess to hands-on learning with coloring, pattern blocks and math games. Teachers also observed early learning indicators such as letter and sound recognition to help them tailor instruction from day one.

  • Lynwood Unified Celebrates English, Theatre Educator as 2024-25 Teacher of the Year

    From her childhood days of teaching Cabbage Patch Kids to more than two decades of inspiring students in English and theatre at Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School, Kathleen Thomas Butiu has always been driven by a love for education. Lynwood Unified School District named Thomas Butiu its 2024-25 Teacher of the Year on May 8, recognizing her exceptional teaching, community involvement and dedication to student-centered learning.

Lynwood Unified Students Surprise Former Teachers in Honor of Teacher Appreciation Week

Lynwood High School senior Alexa Hernandez fought back tears as she expressed her appreciation to her former Cesar Chavez Middle School history teacher Adolph Lopez, who inspired her through his belief and enthusiasm. Hernandez was one of a handful of LHS students who returned to their former elementary and middle schools on April 30 to thank teachers for the impact they’ve had on their success. The surprise visits were in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week and came with invitations to next month’s LHS graduation ceremony.

Lynwood Unified to Host Comedy Showcase to Raise Money for Students

Lynwood Unified will hold its second annual Comedy Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3 in the Lynwood High School auditorium, 4050 E. Imperial Hwy., Lynwood. The event is a benefit for the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates Fitness at District Track and Field Event

More than 700 Lynwood Unified K-8 students competed in the District’s annual Track and Field Championships on April 13 at Lynwood High School. Athletes trained for four months in preparation for the event, which celebrated health and fitness. Students who earned first- through fifth-place finishes advance to a Qualifier Meet on May 19 at Rancho Dominguez Preparatory in Long Beach. Photos are available.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates ‘Every Student Succeeds’ Nominees

Lynwood Unified held a celebration on April 12 for each student selected as an “Every Student Succeeds” nominee, an honor given to students who have overcome adversity to achieve success. Each school had one student recognized during the awards dinner held at Will Rogers Elementary School.

Lynwood Unified Adult School Announces ‘Every Student Succeeding’ Nominee

Lynwood Unified Community Adult School (LCAS) student Henry Velasco was once without food or shelter, but despite those obstacles he made it his goal to return to school and further his education by obtaining his high school diploma and attending college. Velasco’s perseverance is one of the many reasons he was honored as the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Every Student Succeeding Program nominee, an honor given to students who have shown growth and gained the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively as citizens in their community.

Firebaugh High School Hosts Red Cross Blood Drive

Firebaugh High School hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive for students and staff on April 11. The drive was open to anyone 16 and up and promoted a community of giving. The event followed a drive put on by Lynwood High School the previous week.

Lynwood Unified Hosts 6th Annual Arts Festival and District Showcase

Lynwood Unified School District students put on their dancing shoes and grabbed their musical instruments for the District’s sixth annual Arts Festival on April 6 at Lynwood High School. The free event featured art, music, drama, dance and food. A Ballet Folclórico Do Brasil performance took place as well as a Conga Kids Dance Competition.

Lynwood Unified Adult School Announces Student Honor

Lynwood Unified Community Adult School (LCAS) student Henry Velasco has been nominated to receive an Every Student Succeeds Program award, an honor given to students who have shown growth and gained the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively as citizens in their community. Velasco holds a 3.85 GPA as a full-time student and also works 40 hours.

Lynwood High School Hosts Red Cross Blood Drive

Lynwood High School hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive for students and staff on April 4. The drive was open to anyone 16 and up and promoted a community of giving. All donors received a free American Red Cross t-shirt.

Lynwood Elementary School Hosts College Fair

Washington Elementary School parents and families learned a student-run lesson in colleges and universities during the school’s College Fair on March 28. Students prepared presentations that showcased college options and answered questions during a tour for those in attendance.
