  • Lynwood Unified’s Kinder Jumpstart Gives Youngest Scholars a Confident Start to School

    Classrooms across Lynwood Unified School District were filled with bright smiles and eager energy on Aug. 8 as hundreds of incoming Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten students and their families participated in the District’s inaugural Kinder Jumpstart event, held just days before the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The special welcome day, hosted at all 12 elementary schools, began with cheerful back-to-school photo opportunities, colorful “Welcome to Kindergarten” signs, and festive balloon displays that set the tone for a day filled with excitement. Students met their teachers, explored their classrooms and took part in activities designed to ease first-day jitters – from read-aloud story time and outdoor recess to hands-on learning with coloring, pattern blocks and math games. Teachers also observed early learning indicators such as letter and sound recognition to help them tailor instruction from day one.

  • Lynwood Unified Joins Forces to Transform 10 Campuses into Green, Sustainable Spaces

    Lynwood Unified School District is teaming up with SLA Inc. to transform 10 school sites and campuses into sustainable green spaces in which to learn and grow through The Lynwood Greening Initiative, a project funded by nearly $2 million in CAL FIRE grants. The initiative, which will roll out over the next three years, will revamp 10 sites – Firebaugh High School, Hosler Middle School and Mark Twain, Helen Keller, Lincoln, Lugo, Roosevelt and Washington elementary schools, and the Early Childhood Education (ECE) centers at Lindbergh and Will Rogers elementary schools – into eco-friendly hubs that reflect the community’s vision while providing students with hands-on environmental learning experiences.

Lynwood Unified Class of 2019 Inspires Students During Senior Walk

Members of Lynwood Unified’s Class of 2019 visited elementary and middle school students during a special Senior Walk on June 11 designed to inspire younger students to pursue their higher education goals. The seniors arrived at campuses dressed in caps and gowns and spoke to young students and visited with teachers and classrooms ahead of their commencement ceremonies.

Lynwood Unified’s Class of 2019 will visit elementary and middle school students during a special Senior Walk event at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 11. Seniors will arrive at campuses dressed in their caps and gowns and speak to students about their educational journeys. The visits will begin at Hosler Middle School, 11300 Spruce St., Lynwood.

Lynwood Unified Salutes Class of 2019

Lynwood Unified School District celebrated nearly 900 graduates during commencement ceremonies. Approximately 200 students from Vista High School received diplomas on June 12, while Firebaugh High School graduated nearly 300 on June 13 and Lynwood High 400 on June 14. Valedictorians and salutatorians urged classmates to relish their high school years even as they prepare to seize the future.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates Mental Health Awareness

Lynwood Unified celebrated Mental Health Awareness month on May 24 with an event featuring engaging activities, informational booths and puppies at Firebaugh High School. The National Alliance on Mental Illness partnered with the District to provide information on topics like post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety.

Abbott Elementary to Showcase Campus Murals in Turnaround Arts Project

Nearly 100 students and staff members of Abbott Elementary will showcase artwork throughout the walls of the school’s campus in celebration of its participation in the Turnaround Arts: California program. The Inside Out Project will make a visual statement about the school’s commitment to leveraging the arts for educational equity. Abbott was accepted into the Turnaround Arts program in summer 2018, providing teacher training, a regional coach to facilitate Abbott’s strategic arts plan and coordinated support for public arts events.

Lynwood Unified to Dedicate New Athletic Field at Middle School

Lynwood Unified will welcome parents, students and community members to a dedication ceremony for the District’s new athletic field at Lynwood Middle School, 12124 Bullis Road, Lynwood. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 28. The athletic field will feature space for soccer, football and track and field. It will be available to multiple schools, including Firebaugh High.

Lynwood Unified Marks Teacher Appreciation Week with Surprise Visits

A handful of Lynwood High School students returned to their former elementary and middle schools to thank teachers for the impact they have had on their success. The surprise visits were in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week and came with invitations to next month’s graduation ceremony.

Lynwood Unified to Give Free Eyeglasses to More Than 320 Students

More than 320 Lynwood High School students received free eyeglasses through the District’s partnership with Vision To Learn, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education. The students who received the new eyewear went through free screenings in fall 2018 and selected their own frames. VTL specialists partnered with Lynwood’s Rotary Club and joined LHS staff members to distribute the glasses.

Lynwood Unified Students Surprise Former Teachers in Honor of Teacher Appreciation Week

Lynwood High School senior Alexa Hernandez fought back tears as she expressed her appreciation to her former Cesar Chavez Middle School history teacher Adolph Lopez, who inspired her through his belief and enthusiasm. Hernandez was one of a handful of LHS students who returned to their former elementary and middle schools on April 30 to thank teachers for the impact they’ve had on their success. The surprise visits were in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week and came with invitations to next month’s LHS graduation ceremony.
