Lynwood Unified Elementary Honored for Behavioral Program
Wilson Elementary School has been recognized by the California Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Coalition for successfully implementing the PBIS program. The school has been identified as a silver medal school and will have its name displayed on the California PBIS Coalition webpage and posted at the fourth annual California PBIS Conference in Sacramento on Oct. 28-29. PBIS awards gold, silver and bronze distinctions to schools that successfully execute the program.
Lynwood Unified to Serve Breakfast and Lunch to All Students at No Cost
Lynwood Unified School District announced an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch/School Breakfast Programs for the 2019-2020 school year that will allow all K-12 students to be served breakfast and lunch at no charge. The new service will not require household applications.
Lynwood Unified School District will welcome back about 14,000 students to campuses with improved facilities and new programs when classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 21. The District has launched a new Mental Health Project that will provide occupational therapy and assessments to students and their families. In the classroom, the District will offer every student a personal tech device and update tech programs through its partnership with the League of Innovative Schools – a coalition of K-12 school districts that work together to inspire students through technology education. In October, Lynwood Unified will celebrate a new athletic field.
Lynwood Unified has been accepted into the League of Innovative Schools, a national coalition of forward-thinking K-12 school districts that work together to improve outcomes for students through the use of learning technologies. The network is organized by Digital Promise, a nonprofit organization that strives to accelerate innovation in education and improve the opportunity to learn for all through technology and research.
Lynwood Unified Students Tour Colleges, Monuments on East Coast Trip
Nearly 20 Lynwood Unified students visited Columbia University, New York University and several national monuments during an East Coast tour from Aug. 4-9. The chaperoned trip was sponsored by The Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation. Tour stops included the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Liberty Bell.
Lynwood Unified has received a $45,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente that will go toward a wellness project supporting elementary and middle school students who face emotional and behavioral challenges. The project, which begins in fall, will provide intensive, individualized therapeutic services over nine to 16 weeks.
Lynwood Unified Board of Education President Gary Hardie Jr. has been appointed to the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) Project Grant Advisory Committee, a group of educational leaders who will advise on projects that provide college opportunities to underserved students and families. Hardie was appointed by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon on July 18 after having spent more than a decade working in public education. In addition to serving on the Lynwood Board of Education since 2014, Hardie serves on the city of Lynwood’s Personnel Board, California Advancing Pathways for Students Board, California AfterSchool Network Leadership Team and is the Vice President of the California Association of Black School Educators.
Lynwood Unified to Offer Ride Share Service to Special Education Students
Lynwood Unified will provide transportation for special education students beginning this fall through a partnership with Zūm, a rideshare company that provides schools with safe, reliable and flexible transportation for students. Zūm will feature real-time GPS navigation, and vehicles will come equipped with the technology needed for a safe ride to and from school.
Cal State Dominguez Hills Dance Squad Visits Will Rogers Elementary
Dance squad members from California State University, Dominguez Hills taught choregraphed cheers and dance steps to young students at Lynwood Unified School District’s Will Rogers Elementary during a visit on July 24. The dancers arrived with the school’s mascot to interact with children of the Early Childhood Education program, allowing them to use their props and pompons.
Lynwood Unified Families Receive Free Books at Literacy Event
More than 250 Lynwood Unified students received new books, engaged in reading activities and met with District administrators during the District’s annual Scholastic Literacy Event on July 11 – put on by the Equity, Access & Instructional Services Department. Clifford the Big Red Dog® joined parents and guardians in encouraging children to bolster their literacy skills while Lynwood librarians attended and signed up youngsters for library cards.
