Nearly 300 Lynwood Unified staff members convened in an online forum on July 29 as the District shared questions and concerns of the community and finalized distance learning plans for the upcoming school year. The District organized the forum to provide clarity to staff and empower them to address questions from parents and community members in anticipation of the first day of online instruction later this month. In preparation for the meeting, parent and teacher surveys were distributed to gauge the greatest areas of concern.
Lynwood Unified to Continue Distance Learning in Fall 2020

Lynwood Unified Celebrates Summer Graduates with Virtual Ceremony
Lynwood Unified School District celebrated the summer graduating class of 2020 from Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools with a virtual commencement ceremony, featuring recorded speeches from principals and student representatives.
Lynwood Unified will provide Rosa Parks Elementary students with brand new iPads, laptops, robotic kits, and other learning tools after receiving a $25,000 grant from the American Honda Foundation to enhance technology education. The new technology will allow students to continue reaching success both inside the classroom and out. The District’s students and educators relied heavily on technology to stay connected during school closures. The new devices provided by the Honda grant can equip young learners to continue thriving through distance learning if necessary.
Lynwood Unified Partners with City to Serve 8,000 Meals to Families
Lynwood Unified School District’s food pantry has served an estimated 8,000 meals to families in need through a partnership with the City of Lynwood and local leaders to support the Lynwood community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lynwood’s Greater Emmanuel Temple Church currently hosts the service, allowing families to make appointments to pick up groceries at the church 3740 E. Imperial Highway, Lynwood. Lynwood Unified seniors celebrated their commencement like no class had before them as they were honored through a variety of socially distanced events that culminated their triumph through a challenging year. Class of 2020 graduates were cheered wildly during drive-through ceremonies, surprised outside their homes with lawn signs, and ultimately commemorated through virtual ceremonies that adhered to public health guidelines while still providing a memorable send-off.

Emotional and heartfelt responses to the recent events of injustice poured out of Lynwood Unified students during a student forum on June 1. The District organized the virtual forum to give students the opportunity to discuss their feelings and suggest a plan of action for combatting racial injustice. The group of nearly 70 participants included the board president, superintendent, principals, and members of the District’s Equity, Access, and Instructional Services.
Maddie Martinez wasn’t sure how she would continue to support her family of five. She had lost her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was living perilously off of her savings. Making matters worse, Martinez battles a chronic autoimmune condition that makes her particularly vulnerable to illness. That’s when she happened to see a social media post by Lynwood Unified’s Audrey Casas offering help to anyone in need during these trying times. Within days, District staff member Jeff Ballinger, a longtime philanthropist in the community, showed up to her door with bags of food and an excess of love and support.
