  • Lynwood Unified Joins Forces to Transform 10 Campuses into Green, Sustainable Spaces

    Lynwood Unified School District is teaming up with SLA Inc. to transform 10 school sites and campuses into sustainable green spaces in which to learn and grow through The Lynwood Greening Initiative, a project funded by nearly $2 million in CAL FIRE grants. The initiative, which will roll out over the next three years, will revamp 10 sites – Firebaugh High School, Hosler Middle School and Mark Twain, Helen Keller, Lincoln, Lugo, Roosevelt and Washington elementary schools, and the Early Childhood Education (ECE) centers at Lindbergh and Will Rogers elementary schools – into eco-friendly hubs that reflect the community’s vision while providing students with hands-on environmental learning experiences.

    More than 150 Lynwood Unified School District high school students gathered for a day of empowerment, connection and self-discovery at the District’s annual Teen Summit on Feb. 20, engaging in impactful discussions on leadership, resilience and personal growth. A staple District event rooted in inclusivity and equity, the Teen Summit provided African American students from its three high schools with a dedicated space to explore their identity, gain inspiration from role models, and build a sense of culture and community with their peers.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates Resilient Class of 2020 through Creative Ceremonies

Lynwood Unified seniors celebrated their commencement like no class had before them as they were honored through a variety of socially distanced events that culminated their triumph through a challenging year. Class of 2020 graduates were cheered wildly during drive-through ceremonies, surprised outside their homes with lawn signs, and ultimately commemorated through virtual ceremonies that adhered to public health guidelines while still providing a memorable send-off.

Lynwood Unified Students Discuss Racial Injustice and Healing During District Forum

Emotional and heartfelt responses to the recent events of injustice poured out of Lynwood Unified students during a student forum on June 1. The District organized the virtual forum to give students the opportunity to discuss their feelings and suggest a plan of action for combatting racial injustice. The group of nearly 70 participants included the board president, superintendent, principals, and members of the District’s Equity, Access, and Instructional Services.

Lynwood Unified Staff Helps Raise More Than 75K For Families in Need

Maddie Martinez wasn’t sure how she would continue to support her family of five. She had lost her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was living perilously off of her savings. Making matters worse, Martinez battles a chronic autoimmune condition that makes her particularly vulnerable to illness. That’s when she happened to see a social media post by Lynwood Unified’s Audrey Casas offering help to anyone in need during these trying times. Within days, District staff member Jeff Ballinger, a longtime philanthropist in the community, showed up to her door with bags of food and an excess of love and support.

Lynwood High School Ranked as Top School by U.S. News & World Report

Lynwood Unified received a 2020 Best High School ranking for Lynwood High School from the U.S. News & World Report, which numerically ranked nearly 18,000 schools nationwide this year. Lynwood High is ranked 4,193 in the National Rankings, based on student performance on state-required tests, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college. Lynwood Unified continues to have an overall graduation rate over 90%.

Lynwood Partners Education Foundation Launches COVID-19 Relief Fund

The Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation is partnering with Lynwood Unified to designate a COVID-19 Response Fund to support families struggling amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. The fund will provide Lynwood families and students with education supplies and equipment, basic necessities and social-emotional support. Lynwood Unified Educators Connecting with Students Through Technology During School Closures

Firebaugh High School English and IB Theatre teacher Kate Thomas Butiu has gone from camera shy to YouTube personality. Accompanied by her two teaching assistants, a pair of pit bulls, she leaves her students motivational messages, assignments and personal anecdotes. Thomas is among the Lynwood Unified educators who are embracing technology and channeling new ways to inspire learners amidst school closures that will extend to at least May 5 as the District works to protect the community from COVID-19.
