    Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School Class of 2026 graduate Valerie Gutierrez has been selected as one of only five Southern California recipients of the SoLa Scholarship, earning a full ride to the University of Southern California (USC) this fall. Offered by the SoLa Foundation, the scholarship provides financial assistance, professional development opportunities and a supportive network for first-generation college students and South Los Angeles residents. The scholarship will enable Gutierrez, the first in her family to attend a four-year university, to pursue her dream of studying biomedical engineering, opening the door to a future dedicated to improving healthcare accessibility.

     After nearly four decades dedicated to Lynwood Unified students, Washington Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Kathleen Graham has been named the District’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, recognized for her longstanding commitment to student growth, instructional innovation and campus leadership. Graham began her journey with Lynwood Unified in 1988 after moving to California following her graduation from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Drawn to the District’s close-knit atmosphere and strong sense of community, she built a career centered on meaningful relationships with students, families and colleagues.

  • Lynwood High Esports Team Caps Undefeated Season with Third Consecutive Esports Championship

    Lynwood High School senior Giovanni Morales and Zion Cannon capped an undefeated Fortnite season with a PlayVS Pacific Region championship, adding a third consecutive Fortnite Duos esports championship to a program that is helping students make meaningful connections on campus. Morales and Cannon competed weekly against high school teams across the region in remote Fortnite matches, finishing the season unbeaten in the PlayVS Pacific Region league. Competitions pit two-student teams, referred to as “Duos,” against opposing schools in a best-of-three format.

Lynwood Unified and Teachers Association Reach Agreement on 5 Percent Bonus for 2020-21 School Year

Lynwood Unified School District and the Lynwood Teachers Association have reached an agreement that will provide teachers with a 5 percent bonus for the 2020- 2021 school year, acknowledging educators for their unrelenting service during the pandemic. The one-time bonus is only for the past year and will be funded using the COVID relief funds the District received to provide needed student resources and services to help mitigate learning loss while supporting activities necessary to maintain the operation and continuity of the District and continuing to employ existing staff. The District and LTA are still in negotiations for the 2021-2022 school year.

Lynwood Unified to Host Unveiling for Lynwood High Bullis Campus

Lynwood Unified School District leaders, board members, elected officials and students gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 7 to recognize the upgrades and renovations to Lynwood High School after transitioning to its original Bullis Road campus. Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite and Principal Ana Gonzalez welcomed more than 30 dignitaries and community leaders to see the changes to the campus. The modernized site features new portable classrooms and enhanced labs, a new outdoor eating area and quad, and three art murals that celebrate the Lynwood Knights’ spirit.

Lynwood Unified Provides Families with Low-Cost Internet

Lynwood Unified is partnering with the nonprofit Human-I-T to help ensure families have access to the internet from home. Qualified, low-income individuals may receive discounted or free internet through the Federal Emergency Broadband Benefit. Human-I-T also offers discounted computers to families who qualify, as well as a free digital skills course to teach the basics of computer use.

Founder of Compton Health Bar Virtually Visits Lynwood Unified School

Compton Health Bar founder Dani Solorio, who has been featured on the CBS show “Destination LA” for bringing organic recipes to her community, paid a virtual visit to Lynwood Unified’s Lugo Elementary School to share a new menu item with parents during a special parent meeting on Oct. 21. Solorio shared the recipe for “Fire Cider,” a natural way to boost the immune system. Solorio graduated from Lynwood High School before becoming renowned for her journey as a Mexican immigrant who created a unique and vital health space in the Compton area that offers free health consultations, custom herbal remedies, homemade superfood formulas and natural dietary supplements.

Lynwood Unified Awarded 25K Grant to Advance Arts Programs

Lynwood Unified has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Advancement Arts Grant Program. LUSD is one of 41 school districts to receive the grant to expand access to instruction in dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts.

Solorio will appear via Zoom as a part of a special Lugo parent meeting while demonstrating how to make a recipe for “Fire Cider,” a natural way to boost your immune system for the flu season.

Lynwood Unified, St. Anne’s Expand Early Childhood Program

Lynwood Unified School District, in partnership with St. Anne’s Family Services, is expanding its Early Childhood Education program, providing Lynwood families with additional services and learning centers in 2022. Two new center-based infant and toddler programs will open at the beginning of this year at Abbott and Lugo elementary schools, serving children aged 12 to 36 months. There will be 84 spaces available at Abbott Elementary and 80 spaces for young learners at Lugo Elementary.
