Lynwood Unified Opens New High School Campus, Welcomes Students
Lynwood Unified welcomed back nearly 12,000 students to campuses on Aug. 19, with a new high school facility, increased socio-emotional resources and strengthened safety measures for in-person instruction. Lynwood High School returned to its original campus, located on Bullis Road, with multiple upgrades, including updated classrooms and science labs. Each school will follow safety measures that include wearing face masks, temperature checks and COVID-19 testing.
Lynwood Unified will celebrate its remaining Class of 2021 graduates during an in-person summer ceremony that will officially close out a memorable school year. Nearly 100 total seniors will be honored from Lynwood, Firebaugh, Vista and Pathway high schools during a ceremony at the Lynwood Imperial Campus gymnasium that will include Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite and the Board of Education.
LUSD saw a successful return to in-person commencements last month when the District honored more than 800 graduates at outdoor ceremonies. Last year’s graduating class was only recognized through virtual events due to COVID-19 safety measures.

Multiple upgrades are taking place across campus, including the addition of new portable classrooms, as well as updates to the dance room and locker rooms.

Long before photographer Marcio Jose Sanchez made history last month as the first native of Honduras to win a Pulitzer Prize, he had a deep history with Lynwood where he discovered a passion that guided him to the ultimate career achievement. Sanchez, who graduated from Lynwood High School in 1988, still remembers the inspiration of LHS educators who encouraged him to pick up a camera that would ultimately change his life. Sanchez is a member of a 10-person group of Associated Press photographers who were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in June for Breaking News Photography coverage of Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Lynwood High School girls basketball team secured the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA championship on June 19, following a 58-47 victory over Etiwanda. Just month earlier, the LHS Knights were not even certain they would be able to gather for a season due to COVID-19 safety guidelines and restrictions. Winning the regional title served as a victory for the entire Lynwood community after a year of unprecedented challenges.
Lynwood Unified School District is set to submit a new three-year Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) that leaned heavily on community collaboration with the goal of providing every student with a well-rounded, culturally inclusive education while also focusing on English Language Arts and mathematics. After an extensive months-long process that included community surveys and inclusive input from teachers and other school personnel, parents, and students through a variety of mediums, the LCAP will be brought before the Board of Education at the June 24 meeting.
Lynwood Unified Honors Class of 2021 with In-Person Ceremonies With passionate student speeches and rousing alma mater renditions, Lynwood Unified School District honored the Class of 2021 from Firebaugh, Lynwood, Vista, and Pathway high schools with long-anticipated in-person commencement ceremonies, held June 14 to 16. Nearly 750 seniors and their families gathered on Lynwood Unified District Field, following safety protocols that included social distancing and the use of face masks. Each ceremony was livestreamed to ensure the entire community could participate in the celebrations.
Lynwood Unified Teacher Receives Grant to Study Greek Archeology
Lynwood Middle School history teacher Dr. Dawndria Cox received a William Sanders Scarborough Fellowship for 2021-22 and admission into the 2021 Summer Program at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. The Scarborough Fellowship is worth $10,000 and will cover all expenses related to the experience, such as airfare, lodging, museum entrance fees and tuition to the prestigious six-week summer program.
Lynwood Unified School District’s Washington and Wilson elementary schools showcased new safety features and upgraded facilities during grand openings and ribbon-cutting ceremonies on May 25. District Board members, administrators and the Washington and Wilson school communities gathered for outdoor events to celebrate the improvements, which included: lobby areas that provide a safe buffer between visitors and staff, security cameras and control systems that require visitors to buzz in and be identified before entering the office, and updated fire alarm systems.
