  • Fontana Unified Special Education Students, Teachers Recognized for Hard Work, Dedication

    Nearly 800 Fontana Unified special education students were celebrated in October with Achievement Awards recognizing their determination and commitment to learning, presented by the District’s Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) and Community Advisory Committee (CAC). FUSD special education teachers and staff select the students, from early childhood through age 22, to receive Certificates of Achievement and gift vouchers to local diners including Applebee’s, B.J.’s, and Shakey’s, for their outstanding effort at school.

  • Award-Winning Fontana Unified Theatre Program Celebrates 15th Anniversary with ‘Sleepy Hollow’

    The Jurupa Hills High School Players of the Palace have come a long way since staging their first performance, “Sleepy Hollow,” in the campus foyer for the school’s inaugural Harvest Festival in 2010. Now the award-winning program will come full circle with a 15th anniversary celebration, debuting a new version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on Friday, Nov. 14 at Jurupa Hills’ state-of-the-art Palace of Fine Art Theatre. The new version of “Sleepy Hollow” was written by drama teacher and show director James Griffin, a Fontana High Class of 1994 graduate, and will incorporate the elaborate sets, handcrafted costumes, and student-designed effects that Players of the Palace supporters have enjoyed over the years.

  • Fontana High Honored with Golden Bell Award for Transformative, College-Going Culture

    Fontana High School (FOHI) has been recognized with a Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association for its transformative College Application Submit Day (CASD), a celebratory event that honors students as they submit their college applications and has reshaped college readiness at FOHI, across Fontana Unified, and beyond. This year, FOHI will celebrate both the recognition and its ongoing commitment to student success during its ninth annual CASD on Thursday, Nov. 20, when students actively submit their college applications to qualifying universities. The day features on-the-spot admissions from local universities – including the University of Redlands, Cal Baptist University, University of La Verne, Azusa Pacific University, and direct admission to Cal State University San Bernardino – along with photobooths, “I Applied to College” stickers, college t-shirts, and a family reception. Each year, more than 400 FOHI families participate in the event, with over 2,400 applications submitted in a single day.

Fontana Unified Elementary Schools Receive Grants to Expand After School Programs

Two Fontana Unified elementary schools will receive combined grants totaling more than $100,000 to expand after-school programs that increase access to computer coding classes and enhance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum. Oleander and North Tamarind elementary schools will receive $65,000 and $50,000 in grants, respectively, from the California Department of Education’s (CDE) After School Education and Safety (ASES) Kids Code pilot program.

Fontana Unified to Provide Parents with Tips on Math and Literacy

Fontana Unified will offer its fifth Parent University workshop of the year, continuing its efforts to boost family engagement in the educational process. The first free session on family math and literacy will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the John D. Piazza Center, 9680 Citrus Ave. Translation services will be available.

Fontana Unified Adds Two All-Electric Buses to Fleet, Aims to Reduce Pollution and Costs

Fontana Unified added two electric, zero-emission buses to its fleet that aim to reduce air pollution and transportation energy costs, thanks to funding and support from local and state agencies. Fontana Unified is among 16 school districts across Southern California to receive funding for two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and two buses. The District’s new EV Blue Bird Type D buses can accommodate up to 72 passengers and travel 100 to 120 miles on a full charge.

Fontana Unified Student Places First at CETA Southern Theatre Festival

Henry J. Kaiser High School senior Kelley Bouslaiby’s dynamic performance as Viola in “The Twelfth Night” won her recognition as first place in a lead performance during the California Educational Theatre Association’s Southern High School Theatre Festival, held Jan. 18-20.

Fontana Unified School Nurse Honored by Azusa Pacific, Hot 103.9

Fontana Unified school nurse Catherine Jauregui-Husung received a Tender Loving Care Award on Jan. 10 from Azusa Pacific University’s Inland Empire Regional Campus and Hot 103.9, which honor one local school nurse each month. Jauregui-Husung, who was selected for her compassion and dedication to ensuring student well-being, also received a certificate for a spa day at Glen Ivy Hot Springs.

Fontana Unified’s Summit High Cheer Team Triumphs at Nationals

Summit High School’s coed cheer team scored third place among coed teams in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship, held Feb. 8-10. Summit’s Nationals triumph is the latest success this season, following the team’s first-ever CIF Southern-Section Championship.

Fontana Unified Elementary Schools to Hold Family STEAM Nights

Fontana Unified will hold science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) family nights to extend learning into the home. The STEAM nights will be held at Dolores Huerta International Academy from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29; at Beech Elementary from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30; and at Binks Elementary from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.
