Baldwin Park Unified Dual Language Program to Host Performance
Dual Language students from Baldwin Park Unified’s Margaret Heath Elementary School will perform songs and dances at the Dual Language program’s end-of-the-year celebration. The performance will celebrate spring and recognize sixth-graders who are moving on to junior high and middle school. The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at Margaret Health Elementary, 14321 School St., Baldwin Park.
Baldwin Park Unified Observes Mental Health Awareness Month
Green ribbons can be spotted across Baldwin Park Unified, as students, educators, administrators and staff recognize May as Mental Health Awareness month. Baldwin Park Unified’s Board of Education designated May as Mental Health Awareness month to increase the discussion and understanding surrounding mental health. Baldwin Park High School’s and Sierra Vista High School’s National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) clubs will be hosting activities and events to promote self-care.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary and Santa Fe Fundamental School were recognized on May 4 during the Top Schools LA: Leading the Way for Educational Equity conference for strong results in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics proficiency for low-income Latino students in 2017-18. Kenmore and Santa Fe earned the Los Angeles County Top Schools Award for providing high-quality education for all students and successfully narrowing the achievement gap.
Baldwin Park Unified, City to Host 18th Senior Recognition Ceremony
The Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE) Older Adult Program and the City of Baldwin Park’s department of recreation and community services will host the 18th annual Older Americans Recognition Ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8 at the Julia McNeill Senior Center, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd., Baldwin Park. Kaiser Permanente Medical Center Baldwin Park and Kaiser Senior Advantage will sponsor a brunch for students, families and educators.
More than 150 students in kindergarten through sixth grade from Tracy and Vineland elementary schools crossed the finish line at Sierra Vista High School on May 10, completing the final mile of a 26.2-mile marathon as part of Rod Dixon’s Kids Marathon Run Club.
Sierra Vista High School Student Wins Award in Congressional Art Contest
Sierra Vista High School art student Kevin Bautista has been awarded a Judge’s Choice Award in U.S. Rep. Grace F. Napolitano’s 32nd Congressional District High School Art Competition for his work “Through the Cam.” Bautista and his art teacher Chuck Rowley will receive Congressional certificates at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4 at the Walker House, 121 N. San Dimas Ave., San Dimas.
Baldwin Park Unified Seniors Recognized by East San Gabriel Valley ROP
Twelve seniors from Baldwin Park Unified’s two comprehensive high schools received awards from the East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program (ROP) during a Merit Scholar Recognition Ceremony on May 1. Two seniors from Baldwin Park High School earned Counselor Awards: Salvador Olmos took home an award for video production and Nayley Orellano won an award for early childhood education. Seven seniors from Baldwin Park High and three students from Sierra Vista High School were recognized as Merit Scholars.
Baldwin Park Unified Student Achievement Director Honored
Baldwin Park Unified School District’s Director of Student Achievement Dr. Maria C. Rios earned an Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region XV Charter Leadership Award on April 29. Region 15 is composed of districts across Los Angeles County. Rios started her career in BPUSD as a bilingual instructional aide after graduating from Sierra Vista High School. She was recognized for her exceptional leadership and innovative approach to education.
Sierra Vista High School senior Abrahan Vasquez will study biology at Claremont McKenna College this fall after earning a 2019 Gates Scholarship, an all-expense paid award given to just 300 students across the country. Vasquez, president of the school’s National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) club, was accepted to 11 universities, including USC and UCLA.
Baldwin Park Unified is partnering with Care Solace, an online research tool that assists individuals in finding local counseling-related services, to promote the importance of mental health and ensure the well-being of the District community. Care Solace services are available at no cost to BPUSD students, families and staff. To use the program, individuals answer 10 questions and are directed to an extensive list of referrals for care providers.
