Baldwin Park Unified School Earns AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction
Baldwin Park Unified’s Holland Middle School has been designated as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Schoolwide Site of Distinction for demonstrating outstanding commitment to its students by establishing a culture of high-achievement, ensuring equity and opportunities for all students and providing rigorous academic programs. AVID is a college readiness system that uses research-based instructional practices across the school.
Baldwin Park Unified Seniors to Be Honored by East San Gabriel Valley ROP
Graduating seniors from Baldwin Park Unified’s two comprehensive high schools will be recognized as Merit Scholar Winners and Counselor Award Winners during the East San Gabriel Valley ROP Merit Scholar Recognition Ceremony at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 at the program’s Del Norte campus, 1501 Del Norte St., West Covina. Three seniors from Sierra Vista High School and eight seniors from Baldwin Park High School will receive awards, with two students receiving the Counselor Award.
Sierra Vista High School Program Shows Perils of Impaired Driving
Sierra Vista High School juniors and seniors were presented the lethal and unforgiving consequences of operating a vehicle while impaired during “Every 15 Minutes,” a two-day program that uses a series of scenarios. Sierra Vista hosted the event with Baldwin Park Unified’s School Police Department, City of Baldwin Park Police Department, California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Fire and Coroner’s departments.
Baldwin Park High School Health Fair Offers Glimpse into Medical Industry
Baldwin Park High School students dissected sheep brains and practiced bandaging wrists and ankles for classmates during the school’s Vital Medical Academy’s eighth annual Health Fair on April 3. The Vital Medical Academy is a career technical education (CTE) pathway at Baldwin Park High School that provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in the medical field through courses such as sports medicine and mental health.
Baldwin Park Bands Take Center Stage at Knott’s Berry Farm
Bands from Sierra Vista Junior High School, De Anza, Elwin, Kenmore and Tracy elementary schools wowed guests, families and staff with upbeat and dramatic performances at Knott’s Berry Farm on April 12. Students in all band levels delivered passionate pieces that included music from “Centurion” to “Afterburn.”
Baldwin Park Unified Elementary Schools Selected for Reading Program
Baldwin Park Unified’s Central, Elwin and Pleasant View elementary schools were granted $50,000 by the Masons of California to implement Raising a Reader, an early reading intervention program. Eleven transitional kindergarten and kindergarten classes will participate in the program, in which each student receives three different books a week to read with their parents and family members.
Baldwin Park High School students who are undecided on what path to take after graduation received information and advice from dozens of college recruiters and potential employers during the school’s annual College and Career Fair on March 28.
Baldwin Park High School Students to Participate in Community Art Show
Baldwin Park High School art students will showcase their work at the Baldwin Park Arts and Recreation Center with a special reception at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 11 at 14403 Pacific Ave., Baldwin Park. The art show, titled “Canvases etc.,” will be open to the community from April 8 through May 20. Gallery hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Baldwin Park High School to Hold Driving Toward a Cure Car Show
The Baldwin Park High School community is joining together from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 for the fourth annual Driving Toward a Cure Car Show to help raise money for Class of 2016 graduate Jorge Aquino, Jr. who was diagnosed with Leukemia in October 2018. The car show will be held at Baldwin Park High School, 3900 Puente Ave., Baldwin Park.
Baldwin Park Unified to Host American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
Baldwin Park High School, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, will host a Relay for Life 5K fun run to raise funds for the fight against cancer and to celebrate and remember those affected by the disease. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, community members and families can enjoy student entertainment, engaging activities and local vendors.
