Baldwin Park Unified students, families, educators, administrators and community members attended the inaugural District Showcase on March 2, learning about how the District prepares students for 21st century careers and highlighting opportunities available to students. The District’s 20 schools, Early Childhood Education and Adult and Community Education displayed their school pride and programs at interactive booths.
Baldwin Park Unified High Schoolers Compete in Public Speaking Contest
Sierra Vista senior Diana Aguilar Cruz and freshmen Maryhelen Ortega argued the meaning of freedom of the press during the annual Lions Club Student Speaker Contest on Feb. 25. Cruz won first place, earning a $100 scholarship and the opportunity to progress to the next regional area contest – to be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Salvation Army, 970 E. Walnut St., Pasadena.
Baldwin Park Unified Promotes National School Breakfast Week
Baldwin Park Unified is celebrating National School Breakfast Week from Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 8 with new breakfast items, including cheese omelets, whole-grain croissants and waffles with fresh strawberries and bananas. More than 25,000 breakfasts are served to students on a weekly basis.
Baldwin Park High School Students Explore Triumphs, Tragedies in History
Students filled the Baldwin Park High School gym on Feb. 21 with passionate debates on topics ranging from Roe v. Wade and the Tet Offensive to the #MeToo movement and the fall of the Berlin Wall. The discussions were part of Triumph and Tragedy in History Day, which featured more than 80 poster boards articulating perspectives on historical topics along with presentations in website formats, as dioramas and interactive displays. Students prepared – individually and in groups – for the event over the past few months. Photos and video available.
Baldwin Park Unified’s 20 schools will highlight key programs during an inaugural District Showcase from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 2 at Morgan Park, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd., Baldwin Park. The showcase will feature interactive booths and displays, including the award-winning Dual Language program, science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) opportunities, and an array of career technical courses.
Baldwin Park High School Hosts 8th Annual Film Festival
Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high school students celebrated cinematic arts on Feb. 8 at Baldwin Park High School’s eighth annual Youth Film Festival, where seven short films and five experimental films were screened to students, family and community members. Baldwin Park High School’s Kayla Nguyen earned first place for her short film “Last Words of a Fisherman.”
Baldwin Park Unified Students Showcase Think Together Program
Students at Baldwin Park Unified’s Foster Elementary School were joined by Michael Funk, director of the state Department of Education Expanded Learning Division, and Think Together Founder and CEO Randy Barth on Feb. 7 as they explored the many options available to students through the school’s Think Together program. Student leaders in the after-school program led a tour through transitional kindergarten and kindergarten classes, and culinary arts and physical education courses.
Foster Elementary School students and their parents worked together, using common household items to create and test science-themed devices during the school’s annual science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) night on Jan. 31. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow Katy Wimberly and UC Irvine graduate physics student Arianna Brown worked with Foster Elementary families to create asteroids using clay, rocks and glass to demonstrate how the solar system was formed.
The Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education’s Older Adult Program, in association with the City of Baldwin Park, will welcome community members to celebrate the Year of the Pig from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Performing Arts Center, 4640 N. Maine Ave., Baldwin Park. The annual event features classical instrumental pieces, Chinese folk dances and contemporary routines – including fan dances and a lion dance. Performers also will give presentations on the holiday’s cultural significance.
Baldwin Park Unified schools recognized school counselors through Feb. 8 for their support of student academic success and socio-emotional well-being. Activities and assemblies across the District were held to highlight the tremendous impact counselors have on students and learning environments. The events are aligned with National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association.
