Baldwin Park Unified will hold the last two of three Family Science Nights exploring the evolution of massive star clusters. Cal Poly Pomona Associate Professor Matthew S. Povich and his team will show families how to examine the clusters using telescopes. The events will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 at Sierra Vista High School, 3600 N. Frazier St., Baldwin Park; and Thursday, March 8 at Elwin Elementary, 13010 E. Waco St., Baldwin Park.
More than 30 students at Alondra Middle School are bonding over their love for anime and Japanese culture through the school’s anime club. The group meets weekly to discuss anime shows, draw manga, learn Japanese vocabulary and explore Japanese culture. The Anime Club hosted an animation creation contest at on Jan. 30 at the school.
Lynwood Unified Elementary Students, Alumni to Perform at Music Fest
Banda Nueva Dinastia de Zoochila – a second-generation Oaxacan philharmonic brass band composed of current and former Lindbergh Elementary School students – will give a free performance during the inaugural Oaxacan Philharmonic Bands Audition from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 outside the UC Riverside Performance Lab Arts 166 building, 900 University Ave., Riverside. Musical director Jessica Hernandez, a Lynwood High Class of 2006 graduate, is the first female Oaxacan brass band director in California.
Paramount Unified School District is developing promise agreements with Compton College, UC Irvine and Cal State Long Beach to provide tuition assistance, academic support and priority registration to District students starting with the Class of 2019. The District is seeking guaranteed admission to UC Irvine and Cal State Long Beach for students who meet academic prerequisites and assistance with tuition, book fees and transportation for students attending Compton College.
Forty-six firefighters from across California are hewing their way through structures and carving up cars today through Friday, Feb. 2 during Rio Hondo College’s annual Regional Truck Academy at the Rio Hondo Fire Training Center, 11400 Greenstone Ave., Santa Fe Springs. The program runs for 88 hours over 11 days. Firefighters are training for forcible entry into burning structures, high-rise operations, elevator rescues, rope rescues, thermal imaging, auto extraction and rapid intervention tactics.
Gabrielino High Speech and Debate Team Named to Elite Eight Society
San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High speech and debate team has been named to the National Speech and Debate Association’s Elite Eight Society, which honors teams that earn at least 800 tournament points over the course of the year.
In partnership with Foothill Family Service, El Monte Union is hosting Spanish-language workshops to provide parents with information, resources and guidance on such issues as bullying, goal setting, drug use and anxiety. The parent-child workshops run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. once a month on Wednesdays. Upcoming workshops will be on April 18 at El Monte High School and May 9 at South El Monte High School.
