Students from Monrovia High, and Santa Fe and Clifton middle schools joined more than 1,000 peers from across the region at Monrovia High to learn how to become leaders in a digital society as part of Josten’s Renaissance’s “Find Your Grind” Tour. Gabrielino High Student Builds Garden Beds for Elementary School
Gabrielino High School student Nicholas Correnti completed his Eagle Scout project on Jan. 20 by helping Roosevelt Elementary complete its school garden, which provides students with hands-on nutrition and wellness learning opportunities. Correnti worked with Roosevelt volunteers to build, stain and fill nine new garden beds, giving each of the school’s classrooms its own bed.
Students from Bassett Unified’s Edgewood Academy and Torch Middle School are working with college mentors through Citrus College’s Rocketry Outreach Program, gaining hands-on experience designing, building and launching rockets. The students will meet at Citrus College, 1000 W. Foothill Blvd., Glendora, on Friday, Feb. 23 to analyze the data from rocket launches and to prepare presentations for a Saturday, March 24 symposium and award ceremony. Photos are available
Monrovia Unified Students Study Art at LACMA After-school Program
Twenty-five students from Monrovia Unified’s Monroe Elementary discussed color, texture and the artist’s intentions for a 328-year-old tapestry before creating their own tapestries during a Jan. 18 visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The visit was part of LACMA’s eight-week After School at the Museum enrichment program, which runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursdays through March 1. Photos are available
San Gabriel Unified High School Removes Barriers for EL Students
San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School is celebrating reducing English learner non-graduate numbers to 63 percent in 2015-16, down from 76 percent the previous year, following a four-year effort to develop and refine its English Language Development (ELD) program. As part of the changes, the ELD team removed barriers to classes that fulfill college requirement credit.
Whittier High School social science, technology and English students will boost the success of three local businesses through creative mobile and emerging technology solutions they will develop with a $20,000 grant from the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM and entrepreneurship program. Whittier High is one of five Los Angeles-area high schools accepted into the two-year program, which provides educators a unique experience to create a design-thinking curriculum, partner with local businesses and teach students entrepreneurship and technology skills through real-world challenges. More than 150 students from Whittier High’s Cardinal Computer Academy will take part in the program, set to begin in February.
Fontana Unified’s Sequoia Middle School is one of 22 schools in California named to the 2018 California Schools to Watch list for improving student achievement, creating a positive campus culture through student programs and teacher training, and lowering its suspension rate. Sequoia Middle School will accept the award in Sacramento on Saturday, March 3 and hold a campus celebration on Tuesday, March 6.
El Monte Union High School District Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga touted District successes, highlighted award-winning academic programs through live student demonstrations and discussed El Monte Union’s outlook over the next few years during the first-ever State of the District on Feb. 24. The event – held at the El Monte High School Auditorium – included an overview of the District's new vision, mission and goals, adopted this school year by the Board of Trustees, as well as its motto: Community Committed to College and Career.
Lynwood Parents to Celebrate Completion of Communication Program
Twenty-five Lynwood Unified parents will hold a commencement ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2 to celebrate completing a program that taught them how to build digital-age bridges with their children and the community. The 12-week parent workshop, called Project-2-INSPIRE, was hosted by the California Association for Bilingual Education. The ceremony will be at Cesar Chavez Middle School, 3898 Abbott Road, Lynwood.
