El Monte Union School Earns Award for Increasing STEM Education Among Girls

Arroyo High School has earned the first College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in its AP Computer Science Principles course. Out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, the El Monte Union high school is one of only 685 to reach this achievement. Arroyo was recognized for either reaching 50 percent or higher female representation in the AP course or having a percentage of the female examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population.

Monrovia Unified Students ‘Brave the Shave’ at 4th Annual FuzzFest

More than 15 Monrovia Unified students are “rocking the bald” look after the fourth annual Old Town Monrovia FuzzFest on March 15, when they helped raise more than $25,000 for childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Students from Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School, Monrovia High School, Clifton Middle School and Monroe and Mayflower elementary schools raised money. Photos are available.

Bassett Unified Students to Compete in Los Angeles County Math Field Day

Torch Middle School and Edgewood Academy students competed in the Los Angeles County Math Field Day competition on April 27 at Glendora High School. Students in grades six through eight qualified for the contest by placing first in competitions at their schools in November and again during the District competition in March.

El Monte City School District to Host TK/K Enrollment Info Meetings

El Monte City School District will host a series of meetings to notify parents about transitional kindergarten and kindergarten options from Tuesday, March 26 through Thursday, April 4. Fontana Unified to Host Dolores Huerta for 89th Birthday Celebration

Dolores Huerta International Academy (DHIA), in partnership with California Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes, will host civil rights leader Dolores Huerta for her 89th birthday celebration at 10 a.m. Monday, April 15. DHIA, Fontana Unified’s state-of-the-art Spanish dual-language magnet school, was named after Huerta to honor her activism on behalf of farmworkers, immigrants and women. The academy is at 17777 Merrill Ave., Fontana.

Paramount High School to Host Traveling Music, Arts Festival

High School Nation, a traveling music and arts festival, will bring music and arts performances to Paramount High School during a two-hour showcase beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22 at the campus, 14429 Downey Ave., Paramount. The festival will include musical guests, a music zone where students can learn how to play the drums/guitar/DJ equipment and a style zone where students can design their own shirts.

Whittier Union to Hold Future Frosh Night for 8th-graders, Families

The Whittier Union High School District is inviting eighth-graders and their parents to attend Future Frosh Night at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21. Teachers, students and administrators at each of the District’s five comprehensive high schools will provide valuable information about the classes and programs available to all students.

West Covina Unified’s Edgewood IB Schools to Hold Freshman Info Night

The Edgewood International Baccalaureate Schools will hold a “Preparing for High School” Night for incoming ninth-graders from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21. The event, open to all incoming high school families, will highlight the IB Middle Years Programme and high school Diploma Programme, tips on succeeding in high school and freshman course offerings. Bassett Unified Students Receive Rocketry Awards

Torch Middle School and Edgewood Academy students presented projects on building and launching their own rockets during the Citrus College 3-2-1 Blast Off! Symposium on March 16 at Citrus College’s Innovation Center. The event, which included awards for the students, capped a program launched in fall 2018 in which Citrus students mentored Bassett students on aerodynamics and rocketry.

Lynwood Unified to Hold Districtwide Math-A-Thon Competition

Fifth- and sixth-grade students from across Lynwood Unified will test their math skills during the annual Math-A-Thon competition at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Firebaugh High School, 5246 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lynwood. Each Lynwood Unified elementary school will send six-person teams to take on mental math, problem solving and group work.
