Baldwin Park Unified School Police Join Autism Patch Campaign
Baldwin Park Unified’s School Police Department is joining the nationwide police patch campaign for Autism Awareness Month in April. School police officers will wear the colorful patches on their uniforms, and community members can purchase a patch for $10. In addition to the police patch autism fundraiser, officers will receive specialized training that will bring improved services to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Del Mar High School students detailed the injustices and discrimination that prevented people of color from purchasing houses in L.A. County – a process known as “redlining” – during the History Day L.A. competition, held March 9 at San Gabriel High School.
Families from across the San Gabriel Valley are invited to West Covina Unified’s Orangewood Elementary Parent Information Night to learn about the benefits of the school’s new Mandarin Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, which is now enrolling for its 2019-20 kindergarten class. Parents can meet Orangewood’s principal and learn how the school fosters an academic culture of biliteracy and bilingualism and prepares students for lifelong academic success.
Baldwin Park High School held its annual College and Career Fair on March 28, giving students an opportunity to gain information and advice from college recruiters, potential employers and the armed forces. Students who are undecided on what path to take after graduation were able to explore a variety of fields, including construction, landscaping, healthcare and banking.
Bennett-Kew Elementary School is expanding to accept sixth-grade students in fall 2019 and launching a Leadership Academy to prepare kids for success inside the classroom and out.
Pioneer High School senior Ana Cortez received the shock of her life when she was surprised with a $40,000 Edison scholarship while sitting in her AP Chemistry class on March 20, surrounded by friends, classmates and teachers. Cortez is one of just 30 Southern California high school students to be named a 2019 Edison Scholar.
Steve Hebert, dean of the Rio Hondo College Division of Kinesiology, Dance and Athletics and athletic director, has been named Athletics Director of the Year by the California Community College Athletic Director’s Association (CCCADA). The award is a recognition of Hebert’s “tremendous impact” on the association, according to a letter by CCCADA President Dan Clauss announcing the honor.
Fontana Unified student filmmakers prepared classmates for prom season with public service announcements (PSAs) highlighting the dangers of underage drinking and driving as part of the District’s 2019 “Be Smart, Party Safe and Sober” campaign. Fontana Unified administrators – partnering with Fontana city and district police departments and business and community leaders – kicked off the month-long campaign at a March 27 press conference by screening the top five student-produced PSAs, which visualized the impact drunk driving can have on their future.
Rio Hondo College will host Dreamers Conference 2019, themed “Together We Dream,” from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 5 – the first of a trio of events designed to assist undocumented students to pursue their dreams. The conference is open to all students who support equity and their undocumented classmates, as well as to the community.
Bassett Unified to Celebrate District Programs at Annual Showcase
Bassett Unified School District will host the second annual Celebrating Bassett showcase, highlighting student achievements, programs, enrichment opportunities, Digital Learning Initiative and more. The event will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9 at Torch Middle School, 751 Vineland Ave., City of Industry.
