Rio Hondo College broke ground May 14 on a transportation center that will provide an all-in-one transit hub for the campus community. The Rio Plaza project, in planning for more than three years, will feature restrooms, vending machines, bike lockers and shade structures.
Adorned with garlands of blue and gold, Canyon Crest Elementary School welcomed dozens of families and community members on May 16 to celebrate its designation as a 21st Century Learning Exemplar school by the Battelle for Kids Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21).
Monrovia Unified School District is partnering with the City of Monrovia, Centre Stage Theater, and the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley to host the Monrovia Days community festival. The Monrovia Days Parade will feature student scholars and champions from all Monrovia Unified schools, as well as civic leaders and a variety of organizations that serve the community of Monrovia. Throughout the festival, Monrovia Unified will showcase its award-winning programs such as robotics, ceramics, and performing arts with on-stage student performances. There will also be a variety of family-friendly attractions, entertainment, games, and carnival rides.
Rio Hondo College will celebrate the graduation of its inaugural class of Bachelor of Science degree recipients in Automotive Technology as part of a historic state program that allows select community colleges to offer four-year degrees.
Baldwin Park Unified Dual Language Program to Host Performance
Dual Language students from Baldwin Park Unified’s Margaret Heath Elementary School will perform songs and dances at the Dual Language program’s end-of-the-year celebration. The performance will celebrate spring and recognize sixth-graders who are moving on to junior high and middle school. The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at Margaret Health Elementary, 14321 School St., Baldwin Park.
Frank D. Parent Student Honored in Inglewood Unified Student Spotlight
Frank D. Parent eighth-grader John Honore has been selected as May’s Stellar Student Spotlight winner for his fighting spirit and success in the classroom. The IUSD Stellar Student Spotlight honors an outstanding student each month and showcases them in Eye On Inglewood. Honore has overcome challenges to become an accomplished piano player and a straight-A student. He also volunteers for the Frank D. Parent PTA.
Bassett Unified Hosts Career Fair for High School Students
Bassett Unified School District held a Career Fair sponsored by Bassett Adult School on May 1 at Bassett Adult School, allowing Bassett High School, Nueva Vista High School and Bassett Adult School students to explore a diverse array of employment options such as health occupations, business and marketing, engineering and technology, law enforcement. Students connected with local employers, practiced soft skills and polished their resumes.
Inglewood School Honored by Imagine Learning for Math Program
Inglewood Unified’s Woodworth-Monroe TK-8 Academy has been selected as a 2018-19 School of Excellence by Imagine Learning for its use of Imagine math curriculum. The school will receive a special banner and become an Imagine Nation distinctive school.
Jurupa Hills High School Senior Accepted to Summer Leadership Program
Christian Castaneda – a student at Fontana Unified’s Jurupa Hills High School – will attend the prestigious California Youth Think Tank (CYTT) college residence program, held June 16-22 at the University of Southern California. CYTT empowers students to gain knowledge and skills for success in college, careers and beyond. Castaneda and nearly 60 student leaders will live on the USC campus, attend daily classes and engage in team debates, public speaking events, team competitions, panel discussions, off-campus field trips and more.
Monrovia Unified’s Monroe Elementary Restores Mural
Parents, students and community members came together to sketch and repaint damaged sections of a beloved Diego Rivera mural at Monroe Elementary School. Principal Lily Jarvis led the team in restoring the mural, which took two weeks to complete.
