Río Hondo College will host the “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a musical about six quirky adolescents navigating their way through the rigors of an off-the-wall spelling bee run by a set of equally zany grown-ups.
Generations of Braves descended on the Baldwin Park High School campus for a groundbreaking ceremony on July 13, marking the start of construction of the new school gymnasium. The Braves’ new gym is one of the first projects funded by Measure AE, a bond approved by Baldwin Park voters in 2018 for the expansion of school safety, security, and enhanced learning facilities. BPHS students, staff and alumni were joined by District and city leaders, as well as representatives from the offices of U.S. Representative Grace Napolitano, State Sen. Susan Rubio, State Assemblymember Blanca E. Rubio, and members of the Baldwin Park Business Association.
Reflecting the Whittier Union High School District commitment to provide equity for every student and maintain high teaching standards, eight teachers have been awarded $25,000 grants by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as part of a statewide incentive program to retain and train National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) to teach at high-priority schools throughout California. The grants will be spread out over five years, with the recipients receiving $5,000 annually beginning July 1, 2022. To receive the grant, the recipients – who are all National Board Certified teachers – have agreed to continue teaching at their schools for five years. The grants will be paid through the California Department of Education.
Buena Park School District is providing more than 200 students with additional support in math, reading, English Language Development, and college and career readiness through its Summer Academy. The academy, which runs through July 14 at Charles G. Emery Elementary School and Gordon H. Beatty Middle School, provides incoming first through eighth-graders with more opportunities to continue academic excellence while also having fun. Each day, both schools’ programs provide additional assistance to the District’s English Language Learners with targeted instruction to increase reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students are also learning how to use a variety of apps from the District’s Apple Coaches to incorporate music, art, and skills to help with college and career readiness.
After 70 years of serving the Baldwin Park High School community, a full renovation is scheduled for the school’s gymnasium. Baldwin Park Unified will host a groundbreaking ceremony at Baldwin Park High School to mark the beginning of construction. As part of a larger celebration, community members and alumni are invited to reminisce, share their memories and say goodbye to the historic gym.
Hoffer Elementary School’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program boasts a comprehensive, high-level curriculum that has contributed to the school’s recent classification as a Nationally Certified STEM School by the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE). Hoffer Elementary was recognized with the National Certificate for STEM Excellence (NCSE) from NISE in May, honoring the school’s commitment to implementing strategies that create a STEM-based campus culture, aiming to foster ingenuity and raise student achievement. Principal Matthew Beilstein has overseen the development of the STEM program for the last 10 years and has helped the program grow in both success and popularity among students.
Bonita Unified School District has been recognized as the Best School District in the San Gabriel Valley, receiving a 2022 Readers Choice Award that reflects the District’s commitment to fostering a nurturing environment full of learning opportunities that empower students to achieve their full potential. The Readers Choice Awards is an annual readers poll conducted by the Southern California News Group, which publishes the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star News and the Whittier Daily News. Votes were tallied from ballots that ran in the group’s newspapers and corresponding websites during March and April.
Fontana Unified’s television production students eagerly took notes, snapped photos and asked questions as New York film director Michael Marantz transformed their school campuses into hazy, dramatically lit sets, gaining industry insight as a team of professionals produced a video celebrating the empowerment of Fontana Unified students. The video, which will debut at the July 6 Board of Education meeting and be shown throughout the Fontana community during the 2022-23 school year, was filmed over four days in late May. The filming days served as a learning opportunity for the District’s television production students, who were invited to step behind the scenes and learn from Marantz and a professional film crew as they brought their creative vision to life.
After months of advocating for the academic success of current and future Lynwood students, Lynwood Unified School District leaders confirmed $250 million in financial support to restore the fallen Lynwood High School Imperial Campus and make Lynwood Unified School District whole again, all thanks to the attention and advocacy of local state legislators. At today’s press conference, organized by Lynwood Representatives and including the presence of California’s Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Legislators, and Congressmembers, the community of Lynwood celebrated this victory that will bring back an essential high school campus that is desperately needed by Lynwood’s youth. These approved funds will help rebuild and fully restore a high-quality campus for the Lynwood community, as well as address the consequential damages to the district. Over the past few months, school district leadership led by Mr. Alfonso Morales, School Board President; Ms.Maria Lopez, Lynwood Unified School Board Member; Dr. Gudiel Crosthwaite, Superintendent, and Gregory Fromm, Assistant Superintendent Business Services, have held multiple meetings with the offices of three senators and seven assembly members in Sacramento to champion action following construction failures that led to a building collapse back in June 2020.
