  • Río Hondo College Spreads Holiday Cheer with Annual Toy Distribution for Student Families

    Río Hondo College (RHC) staff and community donors brought holiday joy to 140 student parents and 385 children through the Basic Needs Center’s annual Holiday Toy Distribution on Dec. 16, offering toys, food and festive activities on campus. Student parents and their children strolled through a festive celebration during the Holiday Toy Distribution. Families paused along the way for a series of activities, including holiday crafts, movies, games and food. Parents had the opportunity to browse a “shopping area” of toys arranged by age group at the event, where they could pick the perfect toy for their child before heading to a gift-wrapping station.

  • Río Hondo College Board Welcomes New Trustee, Re-Elected Member During Annual Organization

    Río Hondo College (RHC) welcomed new Board of Trustees member Yarisma Rocha and re-elected Trustee Kristal Orozco during an oath of office ceremony that preceded the Río Hondo Community College District (RHCCD) Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 13. Rocha and Orozco were each elected to four-year terms on the RHCCD Board to represent Trustee Areas 2 and 4, respectively, during the November general election. The Board also elected Oscar Valladares as the new president, while Rosaelva Lomeli was selected to serve as vice president and Yarisma Rocha assumed the clerk position during its annual reorganization meeting.

  • Río Hondo College Community Approves $442 Million Bond for Essential Campus Upgrades, Modernizations

    Río Hondo College (RHC) will undertake a series of construction projects for essential upgrades and repairs in alignment with its institutional mission to provide affordable access to higher education and job training to Los Angeles County students, thanks to the passing of Measure RH. Río Hondo College, which celebrated 60 years of serving the community in 2023, will utilize the bond dollars to address safety and accessibility issues on campus, as well as modernize classrooms, labs and facilities to better prepare students for careers or university transfer. Measure RH, a $442.2 million facilities bond, passed with more than 64% of the vote from Río Hondo Community College District voters, clearing the 55% approval rate needed for local bonds to pass on the November ballot.[1]

A Taste of Río Returns to Río Hondo College

A Taste of Río, Río Hondo College’s biggest annual event, will bring delicious foods, fine wines, craft beer, vibrant entertainment and more when the event returns to campus on Friday, June 9. The event, which is produced by the Río Hondo College Foundation, will raise funds to support student scholarships, programs and equipment to promote success. Río Hondo College To Host Art Showcase for Alumna

Río Hondo College will welcome back Danie Cansino, an alumna, artist and adjunct professor at the USC Roski School of Art and Design, for a solo art show at the Río Hondo College Art Gallery. The show, titled “Despuès: A collection of works by Danie Cansino,” will feature Latino-inspired imagery. A special reception ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7 at the gallery, with the exhibit running from Thursday, Feb. 2 to Thursday, March 2. Virtual Coffee Talk with Río Hondo College’s Superintendent/President

Río Hondo College to Provide Pre-Apprenticeship Training

Río Hondo College will host Careers For a Cause, an eight-week, pre-employment training program to prepare residents for careers in social services, such as homeless service employers, and will provide first aid/CPR training and assist students in acquiring a mental health first aid certificate of completion. Attendees will receive a stipend and case management to support their participation in the training. On campus, in-person classes will run from Monday, Jan. 30 to Friday, March 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Río Hondo College is at 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA. Río Hondo College to Install Re-elected Board of Trustees Members

Río Hondo College will host an Oath of Office ceremony for its re-elected Board of Trustees members Anais Medina Diaz, representing Area 1 for El Monte, and Oscar Valladares, representing Area 5 for East Whittier. The date of the Oath Office for Rosaelva Lomeli, representing Area 3, will be determined at a later date. The event will include an introduction of the Board of Trustees members, a few words from Superintendent/President Dr. Marilyn Flores and oaths administered by the Honorable Janice Hahn, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Fourth District and the Honorable Hilda Solis, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor, First District.

Río Hondo College Board of Trustees Celebrated with Oath of Office Ceremony

Río Hondo College honored its re-elected Board of Trustees members Oscar Valladares, Anais Medina Diaz and Rosaelva Lomeli with an Oath of Office ceremony at the Río Café on Dec. 14. Valladares and Medina Diaz took the Oath of Office during the event, affirming that they will continue to fulfill the duties of Board of Trustees members and uphold the vision, mission and values of Río Hondo College. Lomeli, who was unable to attend the event, will have her oath administered at a later date. The ceremony included an introduction of the elected officials by Director of Government and Community Relations Dr. Russell Castañeda-Calleros and a few words by Superintendent/President Dr. Marilyn Flores.

Río Hondo College Partners with Lemelson-MIT to Boost Student Inventors, Entrepreneurs Support with $3 Million Grant

Río Hondo College has received a $3 million Title V grant to create an invention education and social entrepreneurship program, which aims to encourage students’ social, emotional, academic and career development. The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to create a program known as Communities Uniting to Model and Build Regional Entrepreneurial Success (CUMBRES). CUMBRES will create a new degree pathway at Río Hondo College to inspire anyone regardless of age, race, geography, and professional status to be an inventor and/or social entrepreneur with a focus on LatinX students and adult learners.

Río Hondo College MESA Students Connect with Industry Leaders During Annual Conference

Four Río Hondo College Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) students learned about job opportunities from company executives, mingled with working engineers and showcased their skills by creating products to assist communities impacted by COVID-19 at the MESA 2022 Student Leadership Conference, held Oct. 28 and 29. The conference, held at the Marriot Mission Valley in San Diego, featured attendees from more than 30 higher learning establishments. The purpose of MESA and the conference is to provide guidance to diverse students from underrepresented backgrounds as they enter science, technology, engineering and math education and careers.

Río Hondo College to Showcase New Dance Works at Fall Concert

Río Hondo College’s Dance Program will host “In Motion,” a fall dance concert, featuring a selection of newly choreographed works by faculty members, students, community organizations and alumni at the Wray Theater at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Admission is free, but a suggested $10 donation will enter guests into a raffle to win a secret grand prize created by the dancers. All donations will benefit the Río Hondo College Dance Program and will help select students to attend the 2023 American College Dance Association Conference at University of California, Irvine.
