  • Río Hondo College Community Approves $442 Million Bond for Essential Campus Upgrades, Modernizations

    Río Hondo College (RHC) will undertake a series of construction projects for essential upgrades and repairs in alignment with its institutional mission to provide affordable access to higher education and job training to Los Angeles County students, thanks to the passing of Measure RH. Río Hondo College, which celebrated 60 years of serving the community in 2023, will utilize the bond dollars to address safety and accessibility issues on campus, as well as modernize classrooms, labs and facilities to better prepare students for careers or university transfer. Measure RH, a $442.2 million facilities bond, passed with more than 64% of the vote from Río Hondo Community College District voters, clearing the 55% approval rate needed for local bonds to pass on the November ballot.[1]

  • Río Hondo College Launches Second Bachelor’s Program in Electronic Digital Instrument

    Rio Hondo College (RHC) will continue expanding its academic offerings as part of its mission to remove barriers to higher education when it releases its Bachelor of Science in Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI), Performance and Production of Electronic Music in fall 2025. The launch of the new bachelor’s program will make Río Hondo College the only school in the California Community College system to offer a bachelor’s in EDI Performance and Production, according to Dr. George Wheeler, interim dean of Arts, Business, and Cultural Programs. It will also be RHC’s second baccalaureate program alongside its Automotive Technology degree, which debuted in fall 2016. RHC’s mission is to provide students with affordable, innovative programming that offers clear pathways leading to in-demand career opportunities. The College’s newest bachelor’s degree builds on its EDI Associate of Science Degree and is designed for students passionate about electronic music.

Río Hondo College Hosts Undocumented Students Presentation

Río Hondo College’s DREAMER’s Resource Center will host a virtual presentation titled “Breaking Barriers: Exploring Our Story” from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20. Río Hondo College will host “Get to Know Your CommUNITY!,” an in-person mixer for undocumented students and their supporters, from noon to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Room LR-128. The event will provide students, staff and faculty members with the opportunity to network, seek out support and build community relations. Food will be provided. Río Hondo College will host a virtual event titled “Embracing the Undocumented Identity through Advocacy” through a partnership between the College, San Diego Mesa College and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, from noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17. The event will present information on how undocumented students can become advocates for themselves and others in their community. Río Hondo College will welcome educational leader Dr. Marilyn Flores as its 11th Superintendent/President with an installation ceremony filled with appetizers and drinks, honored guests and entertainment. The outdoor event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 at the College’s upper quad breezeway of the L Tower. The Board of Trustees will be in attendance for the ceremony, which will feature remarks from Board President Vicky Santana, and Director of Government and Community Relations Dr. Russell Castañeda-Calleros serving as the master of ceremonies. Río Hondo College is located at 3600 Workman Mill Rd., Whittier.

Río Hondo College Professor to Serve on Advisory Committee for California Energy Commission

Río Hondo College Alternative Fuels/Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles Professor John Frala will serve as the academic advisor for the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program, providing guidance on how to communicate educational matters to the public. In his role, Frala will work to ensure that community colleges, colleges and universities receive funding to train future clean energy technicians to support Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order N-79-20, which states that 100 percent of in-state sales of new cars and trucks will be zero-emission by 2035.

Río Hondo College Board of Trustees Member Named to Association of Community College Trustees

Río Hondo College Board of Trustees Member Oscar Valladares has been appointed to fill a vacated term on the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Board of Directors as a means to further advocate for the equity, support and opportunities of community college students. Valladares said this appointment is just one of the many ways that Río Hondo College leaders are working to support and inspire students on the legislative level. In this role, he aims to champion Río Hondo College’s educational goals, which include providing affordable education, ensuring student success, increasing graduation rates and creating more career pathways for high-paying jobs.

Alejandro Fernández Gifts part of his ‘Amor y Patria’ Tour Proceeds to Undocumented Students at Río Hondo College

Several undocumented Río Hondo College future students will soon receive scholarships to attend college, thanks to a pledge from Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández to donate a portion of concert proceeds from his “Amor y Patria” tour this fall. Fernández will donate partial proceeds from his exclusive and limited “Amor y Patria” run in September, to Río Hondo College as a means of funding the education of undocumented students under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), also known as ‘Dreamers.’ To be considered for the scholarship, students need to submit a Río Hondo College Foundation Scholarship Application. Río Hondo College, which is the only southern California organization receiving the donation, plans to utilize this gift to provide five ‘Dreamers’ with scholarships for the 2022-23 school year, with additional awards to be confirmed.

Río Hondo College Transfer Rate to UCLA Reaches 81%

Río Hondo College's Honors Transfer Program is celebrating an 81% transfer rate to UCLA, with nearly 100% of all students that complete the program being accepted to four-year colleges or universities. This transfer rate is exceptional, according to Río Hondo College Honors Transfer Program Coordinator and Professor of Sociology Melissa Rifino Juarez, because UCLA is one of the most prestigious colleges in the world.
