  • Lynwood Unified Coach Honored for Three Decades of Excellence On and Off the Court

    Lynwood High School girls’ basketball head coach Ellis Barfield was honored with the Humanitarian Excellence Award by the Lynwood Alumni Foundation earlier this spring, recognizing three decades of leadership that have shaped one of the region’s most accomplished athletic programs. Under Barfield’s guidance, the highly competitive program has earned more than 700 wins and 30 consecutive league championships. These milestones place Lynwood High among the most consistent high school basketball programs in the region – but for Barfield, the accolades have never been the goal. Instead, he said they reflect a decades-long commitment to mentorship through creating opportunities for student-athletes to succeed beyond the court.

  • Lynwood Unified Senior Earns 2026 Posse Scholarship, Continuing Family Legacy

    Lynwood High School senior Isaias Perez Magana has been selected as a 2026 Posse Foundation Scholar, earning a full-tuition scholarship to attend Middlebury University in Vermont in fall 2026 and continuing a family legacy that began more than a decade ago. Magana’s aunt, Lynwood High graduate Evelyn Salinas, received a Posse Scholarship in 2015 and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now a solutions engineer in the tech and services industry, Salinas nominated Magana for the prestigious scholarship and encouraged both him and his brother Isaac – a 2025 Posse finalist – to pursue the same opportunity.

  • Lynwood Unified Receives National Recognition for Districtwide Artificial Intelligence Approach

    Lynwood Unified School District has been named one of 12 school districts in the nation to receive the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) K–12 Student Agency Award, a national recognition honoring districts leading thoughtful, ethical and student-centered approaches to AI in education. The award was presented at the Student and Community Voice AI Summit, held in March in Anaheim, where educators, students and school leaders from across the country gathered to discuss the future of AI in schools.

Lynwood Unified Launches Intramural Sports Program

Lynwood Unified's elementary and middle school students will not have to wait until high school to play team sports. In partnership with Think Together, the District is launching an intramural sports program, which will allow elementary and middle school students in grades four to eight to play such sports as flag football, basketball, volleyball and more in league and tournament competitions.

Lynwood Unified Hosts Demolition Ceremony for LHS Reconstruction

Lynwood Unified’s flagship high school reached a significant milestone during a demolition ceremony on Nov. 6, marking the commencement of a new phase in the LHS reconstruction journey. The event was a pivotal moment for the Lynwood Unified community following the 2020 collapse of a classroom building at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus that led to the Knights being relocated. Notable speakers and staunch advocates of the Lynwood community included Assemblymember Mike Gipson, Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon and Sen. Lena Gonzales, who all played a critical role in securing $250 million from the State Legislature to fund the project.

Lynwood Unified to Expand Dual Language Immersion in 2024

Lynwood Unified is expanding its Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program to Mark Twain Elementary School, starting with a Transitional Kindergarten class in the 2024-25 school year. The District will hold two separate informational meetings about the program is and how to enroll their child at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The DLI program has been available at Will Rogers Elementary School since 2014. Mark Twain Elementary is located at 12315 Thorson Ave., Lynwood.

The event was a pivotal moment for the Lynwood Unified community following the 2020 collapse of a classroom building at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus that led to the Knights being relocated. Lynwood Unified and Lynwood Alumni Host College Conference

Lynwood Unified high school students preparing to embark on their postsecondary academic journeys got an in-depth look into the higher education system during the District’s 24th annual Alumni College Conference, held in October. Students received wisdom and advice from LUSD alumni, and met with representatives from such colleges as Cal State Fullerton, Compton College and Los Angeles Trade Tech College while participating in workshops in which they learned the difference between community colleges, private universities, and universities in the Cal State and UC systems; how to choose the right major; and the first-year college experience.

Lynwood Unified Receives $200K DOJ Grant to Prevent Tobacco Use Among Youth

Lynwood Unified School District is among 37 local government agencies to receive a grant from the California Department of Justice Tobacco Grant Program as part of the state’s widespread efforts to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors. The $201,285 in funds – authorized under the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016 (Prop. 56) – will go toward establishing a set of goals and timelines centered on enhancing resources for students via student-led awareness campaigns, youth outreach, prevention programs and more.

Lynwood Unified to Launch Reconstruction of Lynwood High School with Demolition Ceremony

The Lynwood Unified School District community is invited to celebrate a milestone event and observe the demolition of the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, the first step toward construction of a 175,000-square-foot state-of-the-art educational facility to replace the fallen structures and the eventual return of the District’s flagship high school in fall 2027. The demolition is funded primarily by a $250 million grant from the State Legislature, allocated in July 2022. Lynwood High School Imperial Campus is located at 4050 E. Imperial Hwy., Lynwood.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates 2023 Achievements During 6th Annual State of the District

Lynwood Unified School District students, leaders and community stakeholders gathered to celebrate another year of incredible growth and set their sights on a bright future during the sixth annual State of the District on Oct. 20. This year’s celebration launched the fourth annual Lynwood Gives Campaign, a collaborative effort with the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation. Presenters – including Board President Alfonso Morales, Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite and members of the cabinet – gave a passionate recap of this year’s achievements, emphasizing the growth of programs and new innovative practices that have propelled student and District success.

Lynwood Unified’s Top Leader Named Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year

Lynwood Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite has been honored as the 2023 Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, a recognition that reflects his unwavering commitment to student success and outstanding leadership. Crosthwaite received the surprise recognition from L.A. County Superintendent of Schools Debra Duardo during Lynwood Unified’s annual State of the District on Oct. 20.

Lynwood Unified Unveils Cutting-Edge Biomedical Sciences Lab at Ribbon-Cutting

Lynwood Unified School District opened the doors to a new state-of-the-art Health and Biomedical Sciences Classroom and Lab at Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School during an Oct. 12 ribbon-cutting event, celebrating increased opportunities for scholars to explore the District’s career technical education (CTE) pathways and pursue STEM careers. Students in the program will enjoy hands-on, innovative learning tools and modernized equipment to explore topics within the school’s biomedical science and nursing CTE pathway, including human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health. Programs typically require a four-year sequence of classes that end with a capstone project and an opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications prior to graduation.
