Lynwood Unified’s flagship high school reached a significant milestone during a demolition ceremony on Nov. 6, marking the commencement of a new phase in the LHS reconstruction journey. The event was a pivotal moment for the Lynwood Unified community following the 2020 collapse of a classroom building at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus that led to the Knights being relocated. Notable speakers and staunch advocates of the Lynwood community included Assemblymember Mike Gipson, Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon and Sen. Lena Gonzales, who all played a critical role in securing $250 million from the State Legislature to fund the project.
Lynwood Unified to Expand Dual Language Immersion in 2024
Lynwood Unified is expanding its Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program to Mark Twain Elementary School, starting with a Transitional Kindergarten class in the 2024-25 school year. The District will hold two separate informational meetings about the program is and how to enroll their child at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The DLI program has been available at Will Rogers Elementary School since 2014. Mark Twain Elementary is located at 12315 Thorson Ave., Lynwood.

Lynwood Unified and Lynwood Alumni Host College Conference
Lynwood Unified high school students preparing to embark on their postsecondary academic journeys got an in-depth look into the higher education system during the District’s 24th annual Alumni College Conference, held in October. Students received wisdom and advice from LUSD alumni, and met with representatives from such colleges as Cal State Fullerton, Compton College and Los Angeles Trade Tech College while participating in workshops in which they learned the difference between community colleges, private universities, and universities in the Cal State and UC systems; how to choose the right major; and the first-year college experience.
Lynwood Unified School District is among 37 local government agencies to receive a grant from the California Department of Justice Tobacco Grant Program as part of the state’s widespread efforts to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors. The $201,285 in funds – authorized under the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016 (Prop. 56) – will go toward establishing a set of goals and timelines centered on enhancing resources for students via student-led awareness campaigns, youth outreach, prevention programs and more.
The Lynwood Unified School District community is invited to celebrate a milestone event and observe the demolition of the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, the first step toward construction of a 175,000-square-foot state-of-the-art educational facility to replace the fallen structures and the eventual return of the District’s flagship high school in fall 2027. The demolition is funded primarily by a $250 million grant from the State Legislature, allocated in July 2022. Lynwood High School Imperial Campus is located at 4050 E. Imperial Hwy., Lynwood.
Lynwood Unified School District students, leaders and community stakeholders gathered to celebrate another year of incredible growth and set their sights on a bright future during the sixth annual State of the District on Oct. 20. This year’s celebration launched the fourth annual Lynwood Gives Campaign, a collaborative effort with the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation. Presenters – including Board President Alfonso Morales, Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite and members of the cabinet – gave a passionate recap of this year’s achievements, emphasizing the growth of programs and new innovative practices that have propelled student and District success.
Lynwood Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite has been honored as the 2023 Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, a recognition that reflects his unwavering commitment to student success and outstanding leadership. Crosthwaite received the surprise recognition from L.A. County Superintendent of Schools Debra Duardo during Lynwood Unified’s annual State of the District on Oct. 20.
Lynwood Unified School District opened the doors to a new state-of-the-art Health and Biomedical Sciences Classroom and Lab at Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School during an Oct. 12 ribbon-cutting event, celebrating increased opportunities for scholars to explore the District’s career technical education (CTE) pathways and pursue STEM careers. Students in the program will enjoy hands-on, innovative learning tools and modernized equipment to explore topics within the school’s biomedical science and nursing CTE pathway, including human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health. Programs typically require a four-year sequence of classes that end with a capstone project and an opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications prior to graduation.
Lynwood Unified School District’s Job Opportunity for Youth program (LJOY) has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Golden Bell Award, a recognition bestowed upon school districts that have demonstrated outstanding programs dedicated to supporting student needs and promoting excellence for all. The LJOY program – which provides at-promise students with the opportunity to complete their high school education while gaining valuable work experience within the District – will be recognized by the California School Boards Association at a reception and ceremony on Nov. 30 in San Francisco.
