  • Lynwood Unified Joins Forces to Transform 10 Campuses into Green, Sustainable Spaces

    Lynwood Unified School District is teaming up with SLA Inc. to transform 10 school sites and campuses into sustainable green spaces in which to learn and grow through The Lynwood Greening Initiative, a project funded by nearly $2 million in CAL FIRE grants. The initiative, which will roll out over the next three years, will revamp 10 sites – Firebaugh High School, Hosler Middle School and Mark Twain, Helen Keller, Lincoln, Lugo, Roosevelt and Washington elementary schools, and the Early Childhood Education (ECE) centers at Lindbergh and Will Rogers elementary schools – into eco-friendly hubs that reflect the community’s vision while providing students with hands-on environmental learning experiences.

  • Lynwood Unified’s Annual Teen Summit Empowers Black Teens with Leadership, Pride

    More than 150 Lynwood Unified School District high school students gathered for a day of empowerment, connection and self-discovery at the District’s annual Teen Summit on Feb. 20, engaging in impactful discussions on leadership, resilience and personal growth. A staple District event rooted in inclusivity and equity, the Teen Summit provided African American students from its three high schools with a dedicated space to explore their identity, gain inspiration from role models, and build a sense of culture and community with their peers.

Demolition of Lynwood High School Expected to be Complete in February

Demolition crews charged with taking down the primary classroom building at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus are moving swiftly and on time, with the structure expected to be fully demolished by mid-February. The structural demolition of Building G began in Nov. 2023. The work to prepare the soil for the building’s foundation is scheduled to begin later this summer. Once the foundation work is complete, construction of the new 175,000-square-foot building will begin. The restored campus – which has been shuttered since June 2020 when a portion of ceiling soffits collapsed due to major structural failures – is expected to welcome back students and staff in fall 2027.

Lynwood Unified Students Receive Free Prescription Glasses

Dozens of young learners at Roosevelt Elementary School received free prescription glasses through the District’s partnership with Vision to Learn, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education, during an exuberant ceremony on Jan. 25. The students previously went through free screenings at Vision to Learn’s mobile eye clinic, where optometrists conducted full exams, wrote prescriptions and fitted students for glasses with frames of their choice. The collaboration between Vision to Learn and Lynwood Unified underscores the power of championing accessible and quality eye care and creating a brighter future for Lynwood’s youth.

Lynwood Unified Breaks Barriers through Dual Language Immersion Program

Lynwood Unified School District students will benefit from a unique and immersive learning experience through the District’s recently expanded Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, which fosters bilingualism and biliteracy among students using a two-way learning model. The program aims to help students achieve excellence through cross-cultural understanding, and will introduce one transitional kindergarten and two kindergarten classes to Mark Twain Elementary School beginning in the 2024-25 school year.

LUSD Board Reorganizes, Celebrates School Board Recognition Month

Lynwood Unified School District welcomed Board of Education members to new leadership positions at its annual reorganization meeting on Dec. 14, setting the stage for another year of exemplary leadership. Maria G. Lopez was selected to serve as Board president, succeeding Alfonso Morales; Alma Carina Castro was selected as vice president and Julian Del Real-Calleros as clerk. Morales and Gary Hardie, Jr. will continue as Board members. Throughout January, the District will continue to celebrate Board members for their dedicated service and commitment as part of School Board Recognition Month.

Lynwood Unified Welcomes Facilities Project Manager for LHS Demolition

Lynwood High School’s Imperial Campus interior buildings are undergoing a comprehensive demolition estimated to be complete in February 2024, with new construction beginning in Summer 2024. On Nov. 27, Lynwood Unified appointed Jorge Ramirez as the new Facilities Project Manager who will oversee the reconstruction project and support the District’s long-term facilities plan. With over 20 years of experience in public education, Ramirez looks forward to making an impact in the Lynwood community.

LUSD Celebrates Computer Science Week with Cutting-Edge Curriculum

Lynwood Unified highlighted its Computer Science pathway at Firebaugh High School during Computer Science Education Week, held Dec. 4-10 to promote computer science education and inspire students to explore the world of technology. Firebaugh students can dive into the world of computer science through three specialized courses that prepare them to pursue high-paying and in-demand careers. Computer Science Education Week served as a platform to celebrate the achievements of Lynwood Unified in promoting STEM education and empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a 21st-century, technology-rich world.

Lynwood Unified Launches Intramural Sports Program

Lynwood Unified's elementary and middle school students will not have to wait until high school to play team sports. In partnership with Think Together, the District is launching an intramural sports program, which will allow elementary and middle school students in grades four to eight to play such sports as flag football, basketball, volleyball and more in league and tournament competitions.

Lynwood Unified’s flagship high school reached a significant milestone during a demolition ceremony on Nov. 6, marking the commencement of a new phase in the LHS reconstruction journey. The event was a pivotal moment for the Lynwood Unified community following the 2020 collapse of a classroom building at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus that led to the Knights being relocated. Notable speakers and staunch advocates of the Lynwood community included Assemblymember Mike Gipson, Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon and Sen. Lena Gonzales, who all played a critical role in securing $250 million from the State Legislature to fund the project.

Lynwood Unified to Expand Dual Language Immersion in 2024

Lynwood Unified is expanding its Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program to Mark Twain Elementary School, starting with a Transitional Kindergarten class in the 2024-25 school year. The District will hold two separate informational meetings about the program is and how to enroll their child at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The DLI program has been available at Will Rogers Elementary School since 2014. Mark Twain Elementary is located at 12315 Thorson Ave., Lynwood.
