    Lynwood Unified School District’s Vista High School is among 31 schools in the state recognized as a 2024 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education for fostering a supportive learning environment for at-promise youth and providing exemplary instructional strategies, flexible scheduling, and support services to ensure personal and academic success. Vista High School serves students in the District who require a flexible schedule due to jobs, family needs or other life circumstances. Lynwood Unified’s Job Opportunity for Youth Program Recognized with Golden Bell Award

Lynwood Unified School District’s Job Opportunity for Youth program (LJOY) has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Golden Bell Award, a recognition bestowed upon school districts that have demonstrated outstanding programs dedicated to supporting student needs and promoting excellence for all. The LJOY program – which provides at-promise students with the opportunity to complete their high school education while gaining valuable work experience within the District – will be recognized by the California School Boards Association at a reception and ceremony on Nov. 30 in San Francisco.

Lynwood Unified to Celebrate Latino Heritage Month with Health and Wellness Fair on Oct. 7

In celebration of Latino Heritage Month, Lynwood Unified will host a Health and Wellness Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Holser Middle School. The fair, which is free and open to the public, will feature live music, folklorico dancing, photo booth, spa, game trucks, food and opportunities for families to explore resources on healthy living from partners of the District’s award-winning Health Collaborative, including Baby 2 Baby, Big Smiles Dental and the LA County Department of Mental Health, among others. Holser Middle School is located at 11387 Bullis Rd., Lynwood (Pathway High School entrance).

Lynwood Elementary Students Meet Dodgers Greats Kershaw, Ferrara

Nearly 75 Lynwood Unified elementary school students received a once-in-a-lifetime experience when they met two Los Angeles Dodgers greats, World Series Champion Clayton Kershaw, and Al “The Bull” Ferrara, as part of the L.A. Reads literacy program. The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, in partnership with Lynwood Unified and Think Together, hosted two L.A. Reads literacy events to promote a lifelong love of reading among the community’s youth. All participating students received a book at the end of the visit.

Lynwood Unified to Celebrate New Biomedical Sciences Lab with Ribbon-Cutting

Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School will unveil a state-of-the-art health and biomedical science lab during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12. Attendees will receive a tour of the new facility and have an opportunity to see Lynwood Unified career technical education students in action. Firebaugh High is located at 5246 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lynwood.

Lynwood Unified High Schools Ranked Among the Best in U.S.

Firebaugh and Lynwood high schools have been recognized in the 2023-24 Best High School rankings by U.S. News and World Report, celebrating the District’s efforts to establish and expand high-quality college and career preparation programs to ensure students’ long-term personal and academic success. Nearly 18,000 U.S. schools were ranked based on college readiness scores, demographics, state test scores and how well they prepare students for college. Lynwood Unified’s comprehensive high schools earned high national and metro-area rankings, an achievement supported by its various career and academic offerings that inspire students to excel.

Lynwood High School Basketball Team Earns State Champion Rings

Lynwood High School celebrated the dedication and spirit of the 2022-23 LHS Basketball team with a ring ceremony on Sept. 12, recognizing the student-athletes who conquered the court during the CIF State Division V Championship game in March 2023. During the ceremony, the title-holders unveiled their championship rings to a gym filled with family, friends, alumni and Knight supporters. The event was an emotional conclusion to a season of great achievements and a testament to the team’s teamwork, dedication and heart.

Lynwood Unified Initiates Bidding Process for LHS Imperial Campus

Several potential contractors gathered at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus on Aug. 15 to receive an overview of the reconstruction project, tour the site, and submit questions as part of a demolition bidding process that will help the Board of Education determine who it selects to tear down the fallen building. The mandatory job walk was the first step in securing a contractor to carry out the demolition of building G and the necessary surrounding areas. To celebrate this next step, the District will soon hold a demolition ceremony for the Lynwood Unified community.

Lynwood Unified Students Kick Off 2023-24 School Year, District to Benefit from $24.5 Million Community Schools Grant

Lynwood Unified School District launched the 2023-24 school year on Aug 16, marked by anticipation and optimism and bolstered by a $24.5 million state grant awarded in May to provide social-emotional services and community resources to students across 16 schools over the next five years. Through the California Department of Education’s Community Schools Partnership Program grant, the District this year will implement a “whole-child” school improvement strategy, extending learning time and opportunities, providing integrated student support, and collaborating with families and the community to elevate student success. The campuses join Lynwood High, which has been a Community School since 2019.

Demolition of Lynwood High Building Expected to Start in October

Construction plans for the new 150,000-square-foot classroom building at Lynwood High School’s Imperial campus and the reconfiguration and upgrade of its athletic fields continue to move forward, with demolition expected to start in October 2023. During a July 23 Board of Education study session representatives from the Huckabee construction firm reviewed the planned phases of the project, which include the construction of the new 70-classroom building, the rerouting of a fire lane and the upgrading of the baseball and softball fields.

LUSD and NBPA Host All-Girls Basketball Camp for Student Athletes

Dozens of female student-athletes from the Lynwood community received once-in-a-lifetime coaching and mentoring opportunities during the inaugural Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) all-girls basketball camp, held at Lynwood High School July 10-12. During the three-day program, the entire Lynwood High School girls basketball coaching staff served as camp coaches. The organization also donated basketballs to Lynwood High and provided 40 local girls with scholarships to participate in the camp for free. The program – which included a gaming lounge, financial literacy session and awards ceremony – aimed to support students as they develop into leaders on and off the court.
