Lynwood Unified Embarks on New Strategic Plan to Reform Education
Lynwood Unified School District students will benefit from the District’s newly launched Strategic Plan, a dynamic roadmap that aims to guide the District in its mission to provide a world-class education for all students, fostering a culture of excellence, equity, and empowerment. The comprehensive Strategic Plan was developed over 18 months through rigorous research and collaboration with 10 groups of stakeholders, including students, staff, community members, labor unions, and local businesses. To be formally presented during the April 25 Board meeting, the plan outlines four key pillars aimed at driving student and District success: Unlocking Brilliance, Cultivating Talent, Uplifting Community, and Modeling Excellence.
Firebaugh High School senior and avid engineering enthusiast Brigitte Lopez is among 30 Southern California students to be named a 2024 Edison Scholar, earning a $50,000 scholarship for her outstanding academic performance and dedication to shaping a clean energy future. Lopez, who earned early admission to Stanford University for the upcoming fall semester, plans to major in aerospace engineering. She aspires to work at NASA or SpaceX and drive innovation with an environmentally conscious approach to technology while promoting diversity and inclusivity in the STEM field.
Lynwood Unified to Host Annual Girls STEM Conference
Lynwood Unified School District is accumulating a noteworthy list of female guest speakers and innovative workshops in preparation for its second annual Girls STEM Conference at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at Bateman Hall. The event will welcome elementary and middle school students from across the District to celebrate female empowerment, engage in hands-on activities, and hear from women in STEM careers. Bateman Hall is located at 11331 Ernestine Ave., Lynwood.
Lynwood Unified School District students embraced girl power during the second annual Girl Empowerment Summit on March 28, where they heard from influential female community leaders and participated in breakout sessions and discussions designed to educate and inspire them to chase their dreams fearlessly. The Summit – organized by students from the Girl Empowerment Clubs at Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools – served as an inspiring conclusion to Women’s History Month celebrations across the District, with Hosler and Cesar Chavez middle school students finding the courage to break barriers and carve a path toward powerful journeys.
Lynwood Unified Students Venture to Catalina Island, Explore Nature
A group of Will Rogers Elementary School fifth-grade students embarked on an enriching overnight camping adventure to Catalina Island held March 16-17, engaging in various hands-on activities to foster a deep appreciation of nature, science and environmental conservancy. The Catalina Island Conservancy piloted the first in a series of all-expenses-paid trips set to take place through 2024 for fifth-graders at Will Rogers and Abbott elementary schools. The opportunity gave students a fresh perspective on the natural world and highlighted the significance of hands-on learning experiences, such as learning to plant, pitch a tent, build a fire, and more.
LUSD Female Students Participate in Girl Empowerment Conference
Lynwood Unified School District middle school girls engaged in an afternoon of leadership activities designed to embrace girl power, ignite positive change across communities, and amplify the student voice during the second annual Girl Empowerment Conference on March 28. During the event, Hosler and Cesar Chavez middle schoolers heard inspiring words from accomplished women and participated in interactive sessions to process and discuss important topics in a safe space.
Young Mathematicians Shine Bright at Lynwood Unified “Mathathon”
Lynwood Unified student mathematicians attempted to crunch all the right numbers as they competed against each other during the District’s annual “Mathathon,” held on March 6, which brought third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students across the District’s 12 elementary schools together for a cherished Lynwood Unified tradition that unites families, ignites school pride, and nurtures a passion for math. The young achievers put their wits to the test in head-to-head competitions of mathematical prowess amid an enthusiastic gathering of families, cheering staff and lively mascots.
Lynwood Students Kick off Read Across America Week with L.A. Chargers
Lincoln Elementary School kicked off Read Across America Week with the L.A. Chargers, who read captivating stories to some of Lincoln’s youngest learners on March 1. The event was held in partnership with the Los Angeles Chargers Impact Fund, which aims to empower youth to achieve their dreams. Students connected with legendary NFL stars, Corey Liuget and Elijah Dotson, both of whom sported signature Dr. Seuss costumes as they read to kindergarten and first- and second-graders. Students received Dr. Seuss books, bags, rally towels and flags, and took home three free books of their choosing from the Scholastic Book Fair.
Lynwood Students Kick off Read Across America Week with NFL Stars
Cesar Chavez Middle School has earned the coveted distinction of being named a 2024 School to Watch by the California Department of Education and California League of Educators (CLE) for its exemplary performance in fostering a positive campus culture and providing an enriching curriculum that boosts student engagement and success. Cesar Chavez Middle School (CCMS) is the second Lynwood Unified School District campus to be recognized as a School to Watch, joining Hosler Middle School, which earned the distinction in 2023.
Lynwood Unified School District’s Vista High School is among 31 schools in the state recognized as a 2024 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education for fostering a supportive learning environment for at-promise youth and providing exemplary instructional strategies, flexible scheduling, and support services to ensure personal and academic success. Vista High School serves students in the District who require a flexible schedule due to jobs, family needs or other life circumstances. The school’s efforts to promote academic and social success for every student contributed to Vista’s recognition as a Model Continuation High School.
