  • Lynwood Unified Receives National Recognition for Districtwide Artificial Intelligence Approach

    Lynwood Unified School District has been named one of 12 school districts in the nation to receive the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) K–12 Student Agency Award, a national recognition honoring districts leading thoughtful, ethical and student-centered approaches to AI in education. The award was presented at the Student and Community Voice AI Summit, held in March in Anaheim, where educators, students and school leaders from across the country gathered to discuss the future of AI in schools.

  • Lynwood Unified Senior Earns Prestigious $50,000 Edison Scholarship

    At age five, Agustin Ramon and his family left Mexico and arrived in the United States, leaving all they knew for a chance at a better life while navigating a language barrier that proved to be a daily struggle. Ramon, now a Lynwood High School senior, overcame those early challenges with the support of his family and the Lynwood Unified community, building confidence in the classroom and setting his sights on a future in the tech industry. His resilience and academic achievements were recognized on March 20, when he was named an Edison Scholar and awarded a $50,000 scholarship.

  • Lynwood Unified High School Dance Pathway Students Shine on the National Stage

    In their first-ever appearance on the USA Dance Nationals stage, students in Lynwood High School’s Dance Career Technical Education pathway earned a second-place finish on March 15, beating out some of the top dance teams in the country. Their lyrical routine, “Medicine,” and jazz routine, “Working Girl,” both of which qualified them for nationals, took seven months to choreograph and perfect by 17 dance ensemble students, program lead and Lynwood High alumna Brittany Washington and instructors. Ultimately, their lyrical routine secured their podium finish.

Lynwood Unified MESA Team Advances to State Championships

Cesar Chavez Middle School’s Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) team put its creative and technical skills to the test during a regional contest in April, sweeping the competition with first-place rankings that have secured them a spot at the MESA State Competition on May 20. The CCMS team will compete against students from across California who will show off their winning projects focused on community equity for the 2023 State Championship title. This marks the third time CCMS will be represented at the state level.

Lynwood Empowerment Conference Inspires Females to Break Barriers

Lynwood Unified School District’s female students were empowered to push boundaries and pursue their dreams during the District’s inaugural Girl Empowerment Conference on March 30, where they connected with women from various backgrounds who have broken cultural barriers, participated in workshops, and received firsthand advice from other District students and alumni. Workshops included a vision board station, friendship bracelet crafts, painting and more, and provided students with an opportunity to foster creativity and explore self-expression. Keynote speakers included Giselle Carrillo, Karla Rodriguez, and Denise Gomez.

Lynwood Unified Hosts 5K Race to Benefit Education Foundation

Lynwood Unified School District and the Lynwood Partners Education Foundation (LPEF) will host their annual 5K/10K Run at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 13 at Lynwood City Hall. All proceeds will go towards supporting the LPEF, which has brought significant funds and resources to Lynwood schools for over a decade. To register for the event, visit www.TheLynwoodRun.com. Lynwood Unified Community Enjoys Night of Illusions During Magic Show Benefit, Raising $23K

The Lynwood community got a dose of “hocus pocus” and sleight-of-hand trickery while helping raise funds for scholars during a live magic show held at the Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School auditorium, marking the return of the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation (LPEF) annual fundraiser on March 17. The fundraiser – held in person for the first time in three years – brought in close to $23,000 to help pay for LPEF student scholarships and project grants.

Firebaugh High School Receives ACS WASC Accreditation for Strong Academic Programs

Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School received a six-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for its excellence in meeting the needs of students and providing them with a high-quality education. Accreditations are based on the school's overall work plan, evidence of acceptable student achievement and commitment to improvement. Schools that meet the rigorous standards set by the commission are considered trustworthy institutions for student learning. Firebaugh High School has consistently shown dedication to student success by providing ample college and career opportunities, social-emotional resources, and diverse curriculum.

Lynwood Unified School District Awarded Grant to Foster Digital Equity for Students

LUSD was awarded $440,000 in Local Agency Technical Assistance (LATA) grants by the California Public Utilities Commission, allowing the District to break down learning barriers by providing digital equity for students. The funds will be used to develop a citywide broadband feasibility study that determines the viability of launching a broadband service in the city. Lynwood partnered with SiFi Networks to build an open-access fiber network called ONE Lynwood, in the hopes of bringing free and low-cost broadband to the community. The LATA funding will help support the developmental and operational costs of the network and broadband efforts.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates AAPI Community with Live Performances

Students and families enjoyed a night of live performances during Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Night on Feb. 28, hosted by the Equity, Access and Instructional Services Department. Themed “Night of Drums,” the gathering was a lively celebration of traditional AAPI cultures in the form of music and dance. Performers included musician Joshua Kamuelaonapuakupanihi Chang, hula dancer Ka'ipolani, Lynwood teacher David Partida and a group drum performance by Asano Taiko. Guests also engaged in a hands-on drumming experience with instruments provided by Turnaround Arts: California while enjoying free dinner and giveaway prizes.

Lynwood Unified Students Celebrate Black History Month

Thurgood Marshall Elementary School students, teachers and families paid tribute to Black History Month on Feb. 27 as part of a Districtwide celebration of African American history and culture. Thurgood Marshall students from each grade level staged a series of musical performances and dances, recited poetry and performed short plays. Additionally, the District hosted its annual Teen Summit, themed “Strength Behind Us, Greatness Ahead of Us,” where high school students engaged in social-emotional learning workshops and heard from keynote speakers.

Lynwood Unified Hosts “Inspire” College and Career Fair

Lynwood Unified hosted an “Inspire” College and Career Fair at Firebaugh High School on Feb. 10, providing graduating seniors the opportunity to explore pathways to their future. The fair served as a valuable tool for students who may not be looking to enroll at a traditional four-year university and are still exploring their post-graduation plans, whether they be attending a community college or pursuing a vocation. Seniors from Firebaugh, Lynwood and Vista high schools met with representatives from organizations and colleges, including America's Job Center, Long Beach City College, Amazon, Cerritos College, Caltrans, Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation and more.
