  • Fontana Unified, County Supervisor Armendarez Announce $418,000 Investment to Expand CrisisAlert Safety Platform Across All District Schools

    Fontana Unified School District (FUSD), in partnership with San Bernardino County District 2 Supervisor Jesse Armendarez, announced a $418,000 investment that will fund the expansion of CENTEGIX CrisisAlert, a cutting-edge emergency alert platform designed to improve response times and enhance safety for students and staff across all FUSD schools. The funding will expand CENTEGIX CrisisAlert to FUSD campuses following a successful pilot program conducted over the past year at four District schools. The pilot demonstrated how the technology can provide faster, more precise communication during emergencies and daily incidents, strengthening coordination amongst school staff, school police, and first responders.

  • Fontana High Freshman Earns Spot at MCJROTC National Air Rifle Championship as Team Finishes Top Four

    As Fontana High School’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) marksmanship team delivered one of its strongest finishes in program history during the MCJROTC National Air Rifle Championship in Utah from February 5 to 7, freshman cadet Victoria Avila’s dedication and hard work cemented her place alongside her team on the national stage. Avila’s path to the national competition was equally shaped by her growth in the classroom as well as on the range. During her first semester, her grades fluctuated, and at times threatened her eligibility to travel with the team. Determined to earn the opportunity, she pushed herself to improve and used the competition as motivation to stay focused on her academics.

  • Fontana Unified Students Confront Consequences of Impaired Driving During “Every 15 Minutes”

    Jurupa Hills High School juniors and seniors gathered along the street in front of campus on the morning of Feb. 23, where they were met with a tragic scene: a staged car crash involving their classmates, designed to confront them with the real-life consequences of driving under the influence. The simulation is part of Jurupa Hills’ participation in the national “Every 15 Minutes” program, challenging students to reflect on the dangers of impaired driving. Throughout the school day, one student was pulled from class every 15 minutes, symbolizing the lives lost to alcohol-related crashes. By the time students assembled outside, they were faced with a powerful visual reminder of how quickly a single decision can alter countless lives.

Fontana Unified, Fontana School Police to Hold Community Safety Forum

Fontana Unified School District and Fontana School Police will hold a Community Safety Forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 5 at Citrus Elementary, 16041 Randall Ave., Fontana. The forum – open to families and community members – will highlight school safety, address community concerns and discuss ideas to improve public safety in Fontana.

Fontana Unified Students Take Home Gold in SkillsUSA Competition

Follow-up Story: Three Fontana Unified high school students earned gold medals for their career technical education (CTE) expertise during a SkillsUSA Region 6 competition on Jan. 27 and will advance to the state final with 11 other FUSD students, to be held April 19-22 at the Ontario Convention Center. Summit High School students received gold medals for photography and customer service while a Fontana High School student won for introductory woodworking. The performances highlight the progress of the District’s CTE program since it received a three-year $3 million CTE incentive grant from the California Department of Education in 2016.

Fontana Unified to Host Free Family Math Workshops for Parents

Fontana Unified School District will hold Parent University workshops from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, providing strategies for math proficiency for the entire family. The workshops will be held at the Piazza Educational Center, 9680 Citrus Ave., Fontana. Childcare services for children ages 3 to 11 will be available, as well as translation services. Fontana Unified’s Summit High Recognized as an AVID Highly Certified Site

Follow-up Story: Summit High School was named a 2017-18 Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Highly Certified Site for encouraging independent thinkers, increasing the college-going rate to four-year universities and providing students with tools for academic and professional success. In 2016-17, 59 of the 60 seniors enrolled in AVID were accepted to four-year universities. AVID works to narrow the achievement gap between the lowest- and highest-performing students and increase the number who pursue higher education.

Fontana Unified’s Sequoia Middle School Named to Schools to Watch List

Follow-up Story: Fontana Unified’s Sequoia Middle School is one of 22 schools in California named to the 2018 California Schools to Watch list for improving student achievement, creating a positive campus culture through student programs and teacher training, and lowering its suspension rate. Sequoia Middle School will accept the award in Sacramento on Saturday, March 3 and hold a campus celebration on Tuesday, March 6.

Fontana Adult School to Host Free ESL and Citizenship Classes
