  • Fontana Unified to Celebrate Renaming of O’Day Short Elementary School, Honor Family’s Legacy

    Fontana Unified will host a renaming ceremony as Randall Pepper Elementary School officially transitions to O’Day Short Elementary in the 2025-26 school year, honoring the O’Day Short Family, which is remembered for breaking Fontana’s color barrier 80 years ago. District middle school student Cyrus Moss championed the renaming of O’Day Short Elementary. Moss submitted a petition with 132 signatures to rename Randall Pepper Elementary to the Fontana Unified Board of Education in March 2024. The Board unanimously voted to rename the school in September 2024 after all administrative regulations were met.

  • Fontana Unified Aviation Program Helps Students Reach New Heights in Aerospace Careers

    From classroom simulations to real-world takeoffs, A.B. Miller High School’s career technical education (CTE) aviation program continues to soar, as students work toward earning their pilot’s licenses, complete major flight training milestones, and launch careers in the aerospace industry. Senior Jesse Cuba is set to earn his private pilot license this summer after completing a major milestone: his first solo flight. Cuba would be the fourth A.B. Miller student in the last three years to secure a private pilot license the summer of their senior year. The A.B. Miller aviation program is a two-year course offering pathways to several rewarding careers in aerospace. It serves as a flight training school and includes a pilot training class, an airline mechanic class, and a flight simulator lab.

  • Fontana Unified Students to Compete on World Stage in International Robotics Championship

    Six Fontana Unified School District elementary and middle school students are preparing to showcase their teamwork, coding, and critical thinking skills on a world stage at the 2025 World Robot Olympiad Open Championships to be held in Panama this October. Mango Elementary School’s Luis P. and Roman H., West Randall Elementary’s Joey Santana, and Wayne Ruble Middle School’s Flora F., Angel F., and Ivanna V. all qualified to represent Team USA Robotics and the United States Engineering League (USEL) at the World Robot Olympiad. They will compete in the challenge-based “RoboMission” category in the elementary and junior divisions, respectively.

Fontana Unified Elementary to Unveil STEAM Room during Family Night

Cypress Elementary will unveil its science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) classroom to the community during its annual Family STEAM Night at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Attendees will be welcomed by Spark-E, a robot programmed by students to give greetings and jazz music performed by the Jurupa Hills High School band. The event will feature stations with various family-friendly STEAM activities, including robotics and a mobile planetarium. Cypress Elementary is at 9751 Cypress Ave., Fontana.

Fontana Unified High School Students Excel in County Academic Decathlon

Eight students from Henry J. Kaiser High School earned medals for netting the top scores in their individual categories at the San Bernardino County Academic Decathlon on Feb. 7. Kaiser’s team has improved steadily year after year and placed eighth overall.

Fontana Unified Students Learn Financial Skills during ‘Bite of Reality’

Summit High School students were empowered to make their own financial decisions – and learn the consequences of exceeding their budget – during Bite of Reality, an interactive simulation that tests students on real-world financial challenges. The Feb. 13 event, sponsored by Chaffey Federal Credit Union, gave students a fictional occupation, salary, family and debt, then challenged them to maintain a fixed monthly budget.

Fontana Adult School to Hold College and Career Fair

Fontana Adult School and Fontana Unified’s Special Services Department will hold a college and career fair for the community from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25. Attendees can meet representatives from community colleges, career technical training schools, apprenticeship programs, armed forces and public service agencies, local employers and more. The fair will be held at Fontana Adult School, 10755 Oleander Ave., Fontana.

Fontana Unified Opens Enrollment for Transitional Kinder, Kindergarten

Fontana Unified School District is accepting 2020-21 enrollment applications for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten through Tuesday, March 31. Fontana Unified Names New School Police Chief

Fontana Unified School District announced the promotion of Lee J. Powell to Fontana School Police Department chief. Powell has served as a lieutenant in the school police department since 2017 and has 33 years of experience in law enforcement. Powell succeeds Martin Sissac, who retired as chief in November 2019 after four years in the post.

Fontana Unified, Lewis Library Delight Students with Epic STEAM Takeover

Fontana Unified School District, in partnership with the Lewis Library and Technology Center, held an Epic STEAM Takeover event for middle school students on Jan. 29. Middle school students engaged in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activities, including a STEAM escape room, coding with Ozobots, building pulleys, creating slime and more.

Fontana Unified Continuation Schools Celebrate Early Graduates

Two Fontana Unified continuation schools are celebrating the early graduation of nearly 30 students, many of whom came to campus behind in credits. Thirteen Eric Birch High School students and 16 Citrus High School graduates worked hard to complete their graduation requirements one semester early and have plans to attend college.

Fontana Unified Students Earn Certifications in Construction Career Tech Pathway

Nine students from Fontana Unified’s Citrus High School are one step closer to mastering a trade after completing the school’s Residential and Commercial Construction career tech pathway and earning a core certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Students completed hands-on construction projects, in which they employed safety strategies, used hand and power tools and applied mathematics and measurement skills.

Fontana Unified Ethical Hacking Students to Advance in Cyber Contest

Summit High School will advance its two JV Ethical Hacking teams to the CyberPatriot XII National Youth Cyber Defense Competition semifinals on Friday, Jan. 24, after scoring in the top 25% of their Gold tier in the state competition.
