Holland Middle School’s fledgling robotics team will compete in the VEX Robotics World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, after scoring a series of come-from-behind victories to finish second in the state championship tournament. The event begins on Wednesday, April 25.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School is being honored as a California Distinguished School for “making exceptional gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards.” The award is the state’s top honor for high-achieving schools. The state will recognize Kenmore at the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 3 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
Fontana Unified School District and Fontana School Police will hold a Community Safety Forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 5 at Citrus Elementary, 16041 Randall Ave., Fontana. The forum – open to families and community members – will highlight school safety, address community concerns and discuss ideas to improve public safety in Fontana.
Sixty Whittier Union High School District students demonstrated their mastery of physics during the District’s inaugural Science Cup, held March 2 at the Sierra Education Center. Student teams from all five Whittier Union comprehensive high schools competed in three separate events: building and racing mousetrap cars, designing and launching bottle rockets and creating a Rube Goldberg machine. Medals were given at the end of each event, with a cup awarded to the overall winner
Lynwood Unified’s Early Education program has been recognized by the Quality Start Los Angeles Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) for its focus on evidence-based child assessments, working with families to ensure health screenings of all children and creating quality educational environments at its 12 elementary sites. Lynwood schools improved or sustained their 2016 QRIS rating, which measures schools in areas of child observation, development & health screenings, minimum qualifications for lead teacher, effective teacher-child interaction, ratio and group size, program environmental rating scales and director qualifications.
Sierra Vista High School junior Diana Aguilar will be honored for touting bilingualism's benefits and bilingual instructional aide Marie Margarette Rivas will be named Para-educator of the Year by the California Association for Bilingual Education on Thursday, March 29.
Del Mar High School has been named a 2018 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education for tailoring instruction to student needs and fostering a positive school climate, which aid at-risk youth on their path to graduation. Del Mar and 31 other winners will be honored at the 2018 CCEA State Conference, scheduled for April 27-29 in San Diego.
Fontana Unified Students Take Home Gold in SkillsUSA Competition
Three Fontana Unified high school students earned gold medals for their career technical education (CTE) expertise during a SkillsUSA Region 6 competition on Jan. 27 and will advance to the state final with 11 other FUSD students, to be held April 19-22 at the Ontario Convention Center. Summit High School students received gold medals for photography and customer service while a Fontana High School student won for introductory woodworking. The performances highlight the progress of the District’s CTE program since it received a three-year $3 million CTE incentive grant from the California Department of Education in 2016.
Monrovia High Hosts 45th Annual Assembly Celebrating Black Culture
Monrovia High School’s Black Student Union hosted its 45th annual Black History Month assembly on Feb. 9, showcasing student singers, dancers and spoken word performances. A retired Monrovia High teacher spoke about attending schools in a segregated community. A City of Hope doctor emphasized that though few African Americans practice in his field, he is paving the way for students to follow his path. Photos are available
Bassett Unified to Host Discussion on District Vision, Safety
Bassett Unified will host its inaugural Coffee with the Executive Cabinet at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Sunkist Elementary School, 935 Mayland Ave., La Puente. The meeting will cover the District’s vision and mission, along with Board of Education goals and safety protocols. Guests also may ask questions of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet members.
