Paramount Senior wins California 40th District Art Competition, Classmate Earns Third Place

Paramount High School senior Noah Endo captured first place in the 40th Congressional District’s 25th annual Student Art Competition held by U.S. Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard. Endo won a $1,000 scholarship, $200 for art supplies and a trip to Washington, D.C., with a parent to attend the national exhibit opening. Endo was honored for his piece, titled “A Growing Threat,” created with color pencil, marker and pen. Fellow senior Susana Muñoz took third place, earning a $500 scholarship and $150 for art supplies. Photos are available.

Lynwood Unified Student Ambassadors Perform at Rwandan Arts Festival

Lynwood Unified students Zion Bennett and Jose Laguna, acting as American cultural ambassadors, performed at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival, held July 13-15 in Kigali, Rwanda. Bennett and Laguna represented Lynwood, showcasing their talents as part of the District’s BRIDGE Theater Project. They collaborated with students from the Mashirika Performance Arts Company on two plays, “Great Minds Think Alike,” written by Cesar Chavez Middle School BRIDGE students, and “Arthur’s Diary,” a Rwandan student-written play that centers on two brothers orphaned during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Bennett and Laguna are the first students to travel outside the U.S. as part of the BRIDGE Project, which uses theater to build international relationships.

Fontana Unified Senior Wins 2018 Gates Scholarship

Amandeep Heyer, a senior at Fontana Unified’s Henry J. Kaiser High School, is one of 300 students in the country to receive the all-expense paid 2018 Gates Scholarship. Heyer, who plans to study computer science at Yale University, was also named a 2018 National Merit Scholar.

17 Gabrielino High Speech and Debate Students to Compete in Nationals

San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School will send 17 of its speech and debate students to the 2018 National Speech and Debate Tournament from Sunday, June 17 to Friday, June 22 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Last year, Gabrielino’s team earned the Bruno E. Jacob Trophy for its program’s history of achievement at national competitions.

Baldwin Park Unified Seventh-grader Qualifies for National History Day

Silence Jackson, a seventh-grader at Baldwin Park Unified’s Jones Junior High School, has qualified for the National History Day competition set for Sunday, June 10 to Thursday, June 14 at the University of Maryland after taking top honors in May for a California History Day project examining the lives of sharecroppers. Jackson is one of two champions selected in the Junior Individual Exhibit Division.

Baldwin Park Unified Seniors Visit Elementary Schools to Inspire Pupils

Students from Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista and Baldwin Park high schools will visit their elementary schools wearing their graduation regalia to celebrate their achievement, thank their former teachers and inspire younger students to pursue their dreams. Baldwin Park High students will visit campuses at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, May 24. Sierra Vista High students will visit campuses at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25.

Whittier Union Celebrates Nearly 3,000 Graduates

El Monte Union High School District honored more than 2,000 members of the Class of 2018 in commencement ceremonies. The District celebrated 530 graduating seniors from Arroyo High School, 427 students from El Monte High School, 322 students from Mountain View High, 394 seniors from Rosemead High and 305 students from South El Monte High. Fernando R. Ledesma graduated 75 students and the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School celebrated 90 students. Together, the five comprehensive high schools produced 58 valedictorians with GPAs of 4.2 or higher.
