Santa Fe High School Summer Bridge Program Inspires Incoming Freshmen

Santa Fe High School welcomed 36 incoming freshmen who completed a six-week Summer Bridge program designed to build their confidence and encourage them to get involved in campus activities. Parents and family members attended a completion ceremony on July 19. A part of the Santa Fe curriculum since 1995, the Summer Bridge class consists primarily of students from Lake Center and Lakeside middle schools who score below a 2.0 GPA. Bridge students listened to guest speakers, brushed up on study skills and time management, and immersed themselves in the six pillars of character.

Fontana Unified to Brief Parents on Computer Science Immersion School

Chaparral Elementary will hold a parent information meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 to highlight its Code to the Future computer science immersion curriculum. Parents will learn about the goals and benefits of the program and watch student-led coding demonstrations. Chaparral, one of the first Code to the Future schools in the Inland Empire, is at 14000 Shadow Drive, Fontana.

Rio Hondo College to Hold Summer Bridge Sessions for New Students

Rio Hondo College will hold the third of three, eight-day Summer Bridge sessions to support incoming first-year students from Monday, July 30 to Thursday, Aug. 9. The program includes a math academy, English preparation course and guided registration for fall classes. The free program is limited to 150 students.

Rio Hondo College Play Will Season Summer with Christmas Spirit

Summer heat and Christmas spirit go head to head in Rio Hondo College’s summer show, “The Hollywood Summer Christmas Show,” an original play with songs and dancing inspired by a child’s love of the mid-winter holiday. The show, which stars an ensemble of nearly 20 Rio Hondo College students, will be performed at 8 p.m. Aug. 3, 4, 9-10, and at 2 p.m. Aug 4, 5 and 11 in the College’s Black Box Theater, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. Admission is free. Attendees will receive a holiday surprise at the show’s end.

Paramount Unified Educator Recognized for Digital Citizenship Education

Nancy Rivas, Paramount Unified’s curriculum specialist of instructional technology, is one of eight educators across the U.S. recognized for creating digitally accessible lesson plans on online security skills, communication and safety. Rivas was honored by Schoology, which provides the digital classroom management tool. Schoology asked for the lessons as part of a Digital Citizenship Challenge focused on promoting better digital citizenship among students by tackling issues like internet safety, privacy and cyberbullying.

Bassett Unified Elementary Students Perform on Steel Drums

Van Wig Elementary School students gave families and community members a taste of the Caribbean during a steel drum performance on June 30, marking the conclusion of an eight-week Saturday morning music training and appreciation class. A dozen Van Wig students displayed their expertise on steel percussion instruments, accompanied by Principal Andrew Candelaria. More than 40 students enrolled in the class, learning the drums used in an ensemble and how to locate the notes to create a melody.

San Gabriel Unified Elementary Music Program Adds New Electives

Roosevelt Elementary’s Music Immersion Experience (MIE) program is offering a new folklorico dance class and songwriting/improv class in 2018-19, expanding the program’s elective offerings to more than a dozen courses. The folklorico dance elective will complement Roosevelt’s Mariachi band class, which was introduced in fall 2017. Songwriting/improv will challenge students to create their own musical performances.
