San Gabriel Unified’s Jefferson Middle School will held its sixth annual College Day on Nov. 16. Students attended dozens of workshops about college and career pathways before finishing the day with a college-themed tailgate celebration.
Rio Hondo College will celebrate the graduation of its second cohort of Tesla-trained automobile technicians – 13 men and three women – in a special ceremony from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at the College’s state-of-the-art Automotive Shop, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. The students are among the first in the nation to complete a 12-week Tesla START program that includes more than 800 hours of training.
Julie Bello, a counselor at Fontana Unified’s Shadow Hills and Canyon Crest elementary schools, will be recognized as one of eight 2018 Educators of the Year by Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 5493 B St., Chino.
Monrovia Unified’s Mayflower Elementary School showcased its Code to the Future program on Nov. 7 during an Epic Build Showcase featuring student coding projects and classroom tours. Students, teachers and parents were invited to the event, which celebrated Mayflower’s focus on incorporating coding as a second language. Students showed examples that include writing in code, building video games and combining coding concepts with an integrated story.
Gabrielino High School Highlights Community during Annual ‘Gab Week’
San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School students engaged in team-building activities, posted smiling selfies and relaxed with a therapy dog Nov. 5-9 as part of Gabrielino’s ninth annual Gab Week, a campaign that promotes a positive campus culture. This year’s activities centered around the theme “Happiness Starts Here.”
Whittier Union to Celebrate Music and Cheer at Annual Band Jamboree
The talented marching bands, color guards, pep and cheer squads and a drill team from the Whittier Union High School District’s five comprehensive high schools will give rousing performances for the annual Band Jamboree celebration, which will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at the Sandra Thorstenson Stadium at California High School, 9800 Mills Ave., Whittier. Tickets are $8 at the gate or $7 if purchased from a band member.
Lynwood Unified has received a California School Boards Association Golden Bell Award for its Guided Planning program, where teachers from the same grade level meet to collaborate, network and share lesson plans that strengthen the District’s curriculum.
Roosevelt Elementary’s award-winning Music Immersion Experience (MIE) program has launched a folkloric dance elective to accompany more than a dozen electives that enhance student learning and achievement through music education. “When we structure our elective classes, we are always thinking about what kind of new cultural and artistic opportunities we can provide to our students,” MIE Coordinator Samantha Theisen said. “We are proud to have a diverse array of MIE classes that help students establish a connection to their community and cultures.”

Monrovia city firefighters dropped 12 carved pumpkins from high atop a ladder that extends from a fire engine at Monrovia Unified’s Bradoaks Elementary School on Halloween, scattering candy across the ground for children to collect in treat bags. Photos are available
