Whether volunteering to help restore wetlands, planting a community garden, conducting a beach clean-up or leading the campus recycling program, Paramount High School Green Club members are preparing themselves to deal with the challenges of eco-sustainability in the 21st century by becoming leaders on their campus. Fontana Unified Students Celebrate National Walk to School Day
Palmetto Elementary students, parents and staff celebrated healthy living – as well as school spirit – as they participated in National Walk to School Day on Oct. 10. Fontana Unified Elementary to Hold College and Career Day
Almond Elementary will hold College and Career Day from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 to inspire students to consider future opportunities. Twenty-five guest speakers will travel from class to class, offering information on professional pathways and higher education. Parents will also receive college information, both for themselves and for their children. Almond Elementary is at 8172 Almond Ave., Fontana.
Baldwin Park Unified Adult Education Program Hosts Senior Citizens Health Fair
Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education will host its annual Senior Citizens’ Health and Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 22 at the Esther Snyder Community Center, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd., Baldwin Park. The event will feature free flu shot, health screenings, health resource information and more.
Bassett Unified will hold a Family Resources Fair from 9:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at Bassett High School, 755 Ardilla Ave., La Puente. The event will feature an array of community resources to support social, emotional, mental and physical health. Organizations include: Mission City, Project Sister, Western University School of Optometry, San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health, East Valley Health Center, Del Haven and the East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless.
El Monte Union High School District is hosting its final Cash for College workshop to help students and families fill out financial aid applications and access other resources to ensure a smooth transition toward higher education. Attendees can get help completing FAFSA and California Dream Act applications from 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at Fernando R. Ledesma High School, 12347 Ramona Blvd., El Monte.
Paramount Unified celebrated a new cosmetology program during a ribbon-cutting event at the Paramount Adult School on Oct. 11. PUSD dedicated a new building for the program, which partners with Compton College to allow students to receive college credit toward Compton’s program and ultimately become licensed cosmetologists. Several students, staff members, community members and alumni gathered at Monrovia High School on Friday, Oct. 26 as the library was named in honor of a former English teacher, Frank Jansson. Remarks were given by former students, while a memorial display featured remembrances and photos from a number of his students and colleagues. Jansson, who taught at Monrovia High for more than 43 years, has been lauded for connecting students to literacy. He passed away in 2003.
Abbott Elementary School will launch its Turnaround Arts: California program with a showcase of a mural at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18. Nearly 100 students and staff will “activate” exterior campus walls using a photobooth truck, black-and-white portraits and wheatpaste. Abbott was accepted this summer into the Turnaround Arts national program, which will provide teacher training, a regional coach to facilitate Abbott’s strategic arts plan and coordinated support for public arts events. Rio Hondo College Hires Search Firm to Guide Selection of New President
Rio Hondo College’s Board of Trustees on Oct. 10 hired education-focused search firm PPL, Inc. to conduct a search for a superintendent/president to succeed leader Teresa Dreyfuss, who is departing at the end of the 2018-19 academic year. The search is expected to take about six months and cost about $31,000. Dreyfuss gave the Board advance notice of her retirement plans in August. PPL has a long history of assisting California Community Colleges in finding campus and district leaders.
