Gabrielino High to Hold Parent Seminar on Advanced Placement Courses
San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School will hold its latest parent seminar, “The Path to Success: The Advanced Placement (AP) Program,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23. Parents will learn about Gabrielino’s AP course offerings, as well as the college-prep benefits of the AP program. Gabrielino High is at 1327 S. San Gabriel Blvd., San Gabriel.
Fontana Unified Cheer Teams Capture 1st, 3rd Place at CIF Championship
Cheer teams from Summit High School and Kaiser High School captured first and third place, respectively, in Division 2 coed at the first-ever CIF Southern Section Cheerleading Championships on Jan. 12.
Fontana Unified’s Redwood Elementary School will hold a parent information night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26 for its Spanish dual language immersion program, which will launch in August. Parents can learn about the benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy, as well as enroll in the program’s inaugural kindergarten class.

Jefferson Middle School eighth-grader Eric Wang was named to the California Choral Directors Association (CCDA) Junior High/Ninth Grade All-State Honor Choir for the second year in a row. Wang, who is among 120 students selected, will perform Saturday, March 16 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in San Jose as part of the CCDA 2019 State Conference.
Rio Hondo College will hold its first Homecoming Celebration in 22 years from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 with events honoring both academic and sports programs. The free program, presented by the Rio Hondo College Foundation, features alumni receptions from 3 to 5 p.m. by the nursing and police programs, food and fun activities for the campus community from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and free tickets to the Rio Hondo College men’s 6 p.m. basketball game against Cerritos College. The La Serna High School Lancer wrestling team brought holiday warmth and cheer to cancer patients at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica on Dec. 15, handing out more than 50 blankets donated by La Serna students and honoring the doctors and nurses who provided a touching final Christmas gift to a La Serna family member in 2017. La Serna freshman Elijah Villatoro created the donation drive to honor his late uncle, Henry Morales, and the caregivers who helped fulfill Morales’ wish to spend a last Christmas day in the snow with his young daughter.
Artwork created by Wilson Elementary School fifth-grade students Tatiana Cato, Leonardo Guzman, Jessie Ramirez, Carla del Villar, Mario Guerrero and Isaac Morales was featured in a 3-D projection on the Los Angeles City Hall building on Dec. 31. The art appeared as part of the Grand Park and the Music Center's New Year's Eve celebration and was made possible by the Lynwood Unified school’s Turnaround Arts: California program.
Baldwin Park Unified School District saw growth in multiple areas on the California School Dashboard, a tool that gives parents, students and educators access to important school and district data. Released on Dec. 6, the updated Dashboard shows that BPUSD students improved their performance on California’s English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests, continuing an upward trend. ELA scores increased by 7.8 points from 2017-18 and math scores strengthened by 4.6 points from 2017-18.
Paramount High School senior Osvaldo Galaz is affectionately known around his campus as “the chef,” a title he has earned due to his considerable culinary talent. Galaz showcased his ability for all to see in October when he faced off against a handful of select high school students and won the Marukan Cup of Culinary Excellence at Cerritos College.
