Monrovia Unified’s Santa Fe Students Study Brain and Lung Specimens
Sixth-grade students from Monrovia Unified’s Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School learned about brain and lung specimens on April 23 during a crash course with Sonia Maljian, director of laboratory services at Methodist Hospital. Students also learned about other organs such as the heart and liver and closely observed samples that were brought into the classroom.
Paramount Unified Briefs Parents on Early College Program
Paramount Unified held six parent informational meetings in April to share details on the new Administration of Justice Early College Program, which allows students to earn an associate degree for transfer in administration of justice at the same time they earn a diploma. Monrovia Unified Offers Students an Alternative Approach to Learning
Mountain Park School, a K-12 tuition-free homeschool option provided by Monrovia Unified School District, offers flexibility to non-traditional students – some of whom are pursuing careers in acting or athletics. Mountain Park exposes students to career pathways, extra-curricular programs and early college opportunities that help with college and career preparation.
California Secretary of State Visits Inglewood High School
California Secretary of State Alex Padilla visited Inglewood High School on April 23 to speak to students about voting and the importance of civic engagement. The event included an assembly, rally and a voter registration drive with students using tablets and paper forms to register to vote. Photos are available.
Baldwin Park Unified is partnering with Care Solace, an online research tool that assists individuals in finding local counseling-related services, to promote the importance of mental health and ensure the well-being of the District community. Care Solace services are available at no cost to BPUSD students, families and staff. To use the program, individuals answer 10 questions and are directed to an extensive list of referrals for care providers.
Baldwin Park Unified School Earns AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction
Baldwin Park Unified’s Holland Middle School has been designated as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Schoolwide Site of Distinction for demonstrating outstanding commitment to its students by establishing a culture of high-achievement, ensuring equity and opportunities for all students and providing rigorous academic programs. AVID is a college readiness system that uses research-based instructional practices across the school.
Rio Hondo College will host a forum from 1 to 5:45 p.m. Monday, May 6 to introduce the community to five finalists for the post of superintendent/president. The event will be in the Campus Inn, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. Finalists are: East Los Angeles College President Marvin Martinez; Pasadena City College Vice President of Student Services Dr. Cynthia Olivo; San Diego Miramar College President Dr. Patricia Hsieh; Los Angeles Community College District Vice Chancellor of Human Resources Dr. Alberto Román; and Mendocino College Superintendent/President Dr. Arturo Reyes.
West Covina Unified’s Early College Academy to Celebrate Star Wars Day
West Covina Unified’s Mt. SAC Early College Academy will celebrate Star Wars Day a day early with dress-up activities throughout the school day and a movie night at 5 p.m. Friday, May 3. The Academy is at 2226 Rio Verde Drive, West Covina.
Fontana Unified will hold its first-ever Family STEM Showcase from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, providing families with a day of engaging activities that highlight science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) offerings in FUSD schools. The event, hosted on Star Wars Day, will feature activities like Minecraft, coding, robotics, rocketry, augmented and virtual reality, 3-D printing, Makerspaces, an innovation bus, an escape room and more. Baldwin Park Unified Seniors to Be Honored by East San Gabriel Valley ROP
Graduating seniors from Baldwin Park Unified’s two comprehensive high schools will be recognized as Merit Scholar Winners and Counselor Award Winners during the East San Gabriel Valley ROP Merit Scholar Recognition Ceremony at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 at the program’s Del Norte campus, 1501 Del Norte St., West Covina. Three seniors from Sierra Vista High School and eight seniors from Baldwin Park High School will receive awards, with two students receiving the Counselor Award.
