SAN GABRIEL, CA – San Gabriel Unified School District will launch a Mandarin dual-language immersion (DLI) program in 2019-20, offering students the opportunity to gain intercultural understand and develop biliteracy and bilingualism in English and Mandarin.

The program will launch with an inaugural kindergarten class at Wilson Elementary and builds upon the success of San Gabriel Unified’s Spanish DLI program, offered at McKinley Elementary. McKinley’s Spanish DLI program will reach full implementation in 2019-20.

“Studies show dual-language immersion students develop greater cognitive benefits and experience improved academic growth compared to their counterparts,” SGUSD Superintendent Dr. John Pappalardo said. “We are excited to expand our dual-language instruction and further our mission to provide an enriching educational experience that prepares students for college, careers and beyond.”

Wilson’s Mandarin DLI program will follow San Gabriel Unified’s core curriculum, use state-adopted materials and support the California Standards.

Open to students within San Gabriel Unified and surrounding cities, the program will expand each year, eventually providing K-5 DLI instruction. Mandarin DLI enrollment is now open and conclude May 31; for enrollment information, visit the SGUSD website.
