El Monte City School District choir students harmonized popular tunes such as “Blue Moon” and “What a Wonderful World” during the District’s inaugural Choral Festival, earning them cheers and applause from hundreds of parents, friends and community members. The festival, held in the El Monte High School auditorium on Oct. 23, and featured choirs from all 14 schools.
Fontana High School will highlight its Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program for area teachers, principals, superintendents and school board members from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 9453 Citrus Ave., Fontana. Fontana High is an AVID National Demonstration School. Educators will attend AVID classes and tutorials, learn about AVID’s schoolwide impact and see how Fontana High boosts academic success for all students.
El Monte Union Families to Explore College, Career Options at Conference
More than 500 El Monte-area middle and high school students and their families gained skills on how to succeed in high school, prepare for college and achieve their personal goals during El Monte Union’s second annual College and Career Family Conference, called “The Places You’ll Go!” Held in partnership with El Monte City and Mountain View school districts, the El Monte Promise Foundation, Rio Hondo College and UC Irvine, the Oct. 19 conference offered over 30 workshops in English and Spanish covering a range of topics, including financial aid, college entrance requirements, resources for Dream Act students and a review of the UC and CSU systems.
El Monte City School District unveiled its new, state-of-the-art professional development center on Oct. 14 before a cheering crowd of more than 200 community members, students, District staff members and elected officials. The center provides staff with an advanced learning space to aid in creating innovative instructional materials for students.
Fontana Unified School District was honored with a Bronze Workplace Health Solutions Award by the American Heart Association (AHA) for the District’s dedication to promoting wellness in the workplace in 2018-19. This is the second year in a row the District has received a Bronze recognition.

West Covina Unified School District welcomed community members, business leaders and city officials to step into school leadership roles during its second annual Principal for a Day event on Oct. 11. The guest principals were greeted by colorful signs and student-led cheers at the District’s 14 campuses, where they gained insight into the responsibilities of managing a school site and learned about the academic and extracurricular offerings in West Covina Unified.
Rio Hondo College will hold a week of events, Oct. 14-18, to support and celebrate its undocumented student population, featuring social events, a fundraiser promoting legal protections, political activities, a family night, personal talks by undocumented students and a walk/run.
Karla Toledo, a Spanish Dual Language Immersion instructor in the District’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum, exceeded even her own expectations when she was recognized as one of the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s (LACOE) 16 Teachers of the Year for 2019-20.
