WEST COVINA, CA – Coronado High School Principal Shavon Roberts has dedicated her career in education to ensuring equity for every student and helping teachers receive the support they need in the classroom.
Roberts has just completed her first month as Coronado’s top administrator, and finds herself inspired by the commitment and diligence of the Coronado faculty and staff.
“This staff cares so much about our kids and are so invested in the diversity of our student body,” Roberts said. “The teachers bring so much of themselves into the classroom so that they can connect with the students. My job is to support their ability to do what they do so well.”
Roberts has worked as an English teacher, assistant principal, child welfare and attendance coordinator and track-and-field coach. As a high school and college athlete, Roberts ran short sprints, but says education is more like a marathon.
“I am watching and learning,” Roberts said. “My job is to maintain what we do well here at Coronado, be part of the team and take the next steps.”
Roberts is an advocate of professional learning communities and hopes to organize regular meetings in which small groups of teachers can share their expertise to improve their teaching skills.
“Our responsibility is to the students of Coronado, to give them access to education so that they can navigate their path through college and careers,” Roberts said. “The beauty of public education is that we can give them the knowledge to do what they want to do.”
Outside of school, Roberts has three passions: Disneyland, sports and her 3-year old daughter.
“Shavon Roberts brings a tireless work ethic to Coronado, and she has a strong sense of where she wants to lead the school,” West Covina Unified Superintendent Dr. Charles D. Hinman said.
“Ms. Roberts epitomizes the perfect balance of enthusiasm and professionalism, which has already had a positive effect on campus.”
