Bonita Unified Announces 2020 State of the District Address and Luncheon
Bonita Unified School District will host its 2020 State of the District, sponsored by the La Verne and San Dimas rotary clubs and chambers of commerce. Check-in will be at 11 a.m. with a $25 lunch; attendance after 12:15 p.m. is free. The event will be Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Hillcrest Retirement Community, 2705 Mountain View Drive, La Verne.
Lynwood Unified to Host 7th Annual Black Teen Summit
Lynwood Unified will partner with the District African American Advisory Parent Council (DAAAPC) to host the 7th annual Black Teen Summit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Bateman Hall, 11331 Ernestine Ave., Lynwood. The event aims to boost high school student academic achievement, college-going rates and access to career resources.
Baldwin Park Unified Soccer, Basketball Teams Advance in CIF-SS Playoffs
Three teams from Baldwin Park Unified will advance to the next stage in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs after thrilling first round victories against regional teams. Baldwin Park High School’s boys soccer team will compete against Jurupa Valley on Friday, Feb. 14. The Braves took down Quartz Hill on Feb. 12 with a 1-0 shutout. Sierra Vista High School’s boys soccer team will go up against Santa Monica on Friday, Feb. 14, after beating Cajon High 2-1. The Sierra Vista Dons’ boys basketball team edged out San Jacinto Valley Academy by a score of 65-39 – matching them up against Ambassador for round two on Friday, Feb. 14.
Fontana Unified Opens Enrollment for Transitional Kinder, Kindergarten
Fontana Unified School District is accepting 2020-21 enrollment applications for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten through Tuesday, March 31. Río Hondo College will host a Homecoming 2020 celebration on Friday, Feb. 21 featuring reunions for nursing program, former basketball players and the Police Academy, free food for the first 500 guests who sign up, and men’s and women’s basketball games. Students who attend the games will also be eligible to win half-time prizes, which include: two PlayStation4 Destiny games, an Amazon Echo, a 7th-generation iPad and two Chromebooks.
Lynwood Unified will provide Firebaugh High School students with a new state-of-the-art STEM lab beginning in fall 2021 after receiving a donation of $225,000 from the W. M. Keck Foundation, which will inspire young learners to pursue success in science, engineering and medical fields. The new lab will allow Firebaugh to double enrollment in its biomedical science and nursing program, along with its advanced manufacturing and engineering program. Those programs currently share a space that limits activities and projects.
Edgewood High School will expand its information technology (IT) curriculum in fall 2020, providing new learning opportunities to incoming freshmen with the debut of a Cisco Academy career technical education (CTE) pathway. Edgewood will hold an open house on Feb. 12 to provide West Covina Unified families with information on the seven courses that constitute the Cisco Academy pathway. The pathway will accommodate 36 freshmen for the 2020-21 school year.
Whittier Union Alumnus Named New Pioneer High’s Head Football Coach
After graduating from Pioneer High School over three decades ago, longtime educator and athletic coach Steve Randall is returning to his alma mater as its new head football coach, bringing with him championship swagger and an emphasis on character building. Randall, who graduated in 1984, comes to Pioneer after a distinguished career as head coach at Colony High School in Ontario, where he compiled a 64-32 record and guided the team to a Central Division CIF championship in 2014, a year which saw Randall named Coach of the Year.
Whittier Union Schools Earn Recognition for Engaging STEM Programs
Two Whittier Union high schools are being highlighted for their outstanding work to expand access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses and develop robust, engaging programs that prepare students for innovative careers. For the second consecutive year, Whittier High School earned the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in its AP Computer Science Principles course. La Serna High School was recently recognized by Newsweek Magazine and STEM.org as one of America’s Top 5,000 STEM High Schools.
Monrovia Unified School District celebrated the opening of Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School’s new Paxton Patterson Lab on Feb. 4. The lab, which contains a series of topically focused stations, will give students an opportunity to develop creative and critical-thinking skills as they collaborate with each other in hands-on learning tasks. Students will receive access to lessons in career technical E=education pathways, such as audio communications, computer graphics and animation, flight technology, structural engineering, and more.
